Lambing is safely done on pasture with our parasite resistant sheep flock guarded by our dogs. Without our guardian dogs all the baby lambs would end up as coyote food. We don't lose anything to predators thanks to our every watchful guardian dogs. Our new Armenian Gampr puppy is doing great with his older brother as a teacher.

Always appreciate when you share more sheep videos!! I rewatch your old sheep videos whenever I need inspiration on rotational grazing. Can you please dedicate a video specifically about KY31 and sheep? I know you’ve talked about it plenty with cattle, but I would love to hear your thoughts on running sheep on KY31. And I realize you have plenty of land to move them on to bluestem or other warm season grasses, but I’d love to hear your experience with it it and problems or LACK OF problems with the “toxic” fescue and sheep.

In regard to the cicadas this spring 2024, for the first time since 1803, two groups known as Brood XIX, or the Great Southern Brood, and Brood XIII, or the Northern Illinois Brood, are set to appear at the same time, known as a dual emergence. The last time the Northern Illinois Brood’s 17-year cycle aligned with the Great Southern Brood’s 13-year period, Thomas Jefferson was president. It will be another 221 years before the broods, which are geographically adjacent, appear together again. So we are the lucky ones to have this event occur in our lifetime.

We lamb on pasture in the second half of May in The Finger Lakes region of NY State. This way we avoid a lot of cold rain on newborn lambs. Our lactating ewes peak nutritional needs happen at the same time as peak pasture production. Lamb prices on the east coast don't peak until late January. The market is flooded with lambs coming off grass in Oct.- Dec. and prices are often depressed. Earlier born lambs weighing over 100# are discounted by the ethnic buyers. When we ship lambs In January the lamb numbers being marketed drop off and prices increase. There is no advantage to lambing any earlier for us. We drift lamb moving the pregnant ewes forward 2x/day and dropping back the ewes with newborn lambs. The back fence gets moved up every two or three days. By doing this we are grazing non-selectively and mitigating barber pole ingestion. We have a lot of coyotes but our LGDs keep our predator loses at zero. Guard Dogs and new electric fence technology to manage grass have made grazing sheep profitable. In addition, we have a flock of commercial North Country Cheviots that have been out wintered and lambed on pasture here for the last 30 years. They have been selected for lambing ease, mothering ability, good udders and teats, and the lambs get up and suck immediately.

Thanks for the video! I enjoy sheep videos but I enjoy all the videos you do. We have an awesome Maremma sheepdog who name is Duke too. I wish all our dogs are like him. You couldn’t ask for a better dog. I will say if you have 1 bad sheep or goat who jumps hot wire they will teach some others too. We got rid of the bad jumper but 1 or 2 ewes will jump or slide under if you pressure them too much to clean up the pasture. We try our best not to do that. Sometimes this year the pasture is so thick and tall that they don’t see the poly braid until it’s to late and they go through it since they are getting a zap behind them instead of in front of them. We try to make a walking path on the inner side of the poly braid so they can see it better too.

Hi, Greg. Do the sheep have any problems with the ticks? And Jan, do you use a flea/tick preventative on the dogs? And it's always so helpful when you have older dogs to teach the new dogs the ropes. Makes life a lot easier. During lambing and calving season, do you get up at night to check the animals? I've often wondered. Would you consider how you manage calving/lambing season for a video or two? Also, how you deal with a cow that rejects her calf? You've verbally touched on that topic, but never a video. Seeing that side of things would be helpful. I know it isn't all rainbows and unicorns; there is always a downside that you try to minimize with husbandry practices and culling. Knowing when to cull seems as important as knowing what to cull.

Juvenile dogs curiosity is sometimes greater than the shock any fence can provide. They can also just jump right over, as the wires are sheep height.

I built 5 swallow boxes. Just like you recommended. I had all 5 inhabited. The sparrows moved in and killed all the babies….i am just sick about it. Ordered Hironbec pendulums from Canada. I know this has nothing to do with the sheep video. But, I just thought I would pass on the only solution I’ve come up with.

I saw a YT video on a repeating sparrow trap. You might want to see if you can find it and build one. It would help reduce the sparrow population and give the swallow chicks a better chance. If you build one and catch the sparrows, see if you have a raptor rehab group in your area. They would most likely be very happy to have the sparrows as species appropriate food for their raptors.

He has a stick with a black plastic bag attached to one end of it. When you swing the stick, the bag can crack like whip. Along with a few firm, discouraging "NO" commands, the pups learn not to follow, and stay with the herd.

I think I catch glimpses of dragonflies in addition to the tree swallows. I'm not sure. Are there many dragonflies working your bugs or are the swallows scooping them up too?

How do you manage to grow lambs lambing so late? I must lamb in april so lambs grow till august when droughts hit, and sheep then recover thru summer and fall. I mean i have close to 300% lambing rate (romanov sheep) but if they gave birth now, they would starve in heat or lambs would be thin. Spring flush gives me 30-40kg lambs with 4 months old.

If we lamb in April, we can severely cold wet weather and lose the lambs. May 1st lambing on green grass with warm weather has worked well for us for over 20 years.

@blubac people start lambing in March here. But I am down in Alabama. Around here it’s best to get them on the ground and growing before you get bad cases of coccidia. I love our warm weather but I don’t appreciate the parasites and “bugs” that come with it

Consider installing a Screech Owl nest box. Owls eat rodents which host ticks.

@@markpiersall9815 Or a barn owl nest box. Each chick can eat up to 6-7 mice per night and mom and dad will eat about 3-4 each. That's a lot of mice being eaten each night.

@@valeriestevens5250 Yes, Barn Owls would be great. Barn Owls hunt in open meadows, vineyards and orchards and mostly eat prairie voles. Screech Owls are much smaller and therefore building and siting an artificial nesting cavity is easier. Screech Owls hunt both in the forest areas as well as the open fields. Screech Owls typically eat more Deer mice and White-footed Forest mice. Easier to provide housing to 7 ounce Screech Owls than 32 ounce Barn Owls.

I had a fellow give me a set of remote mics, need to buy an extension for them because the receiver will not plug into my I phone with my screen protector on. I hope to get my the Apple Store one of these days and see if they make such a thing. I hate to take off my screen protector every time that I want to use a mic. My screen is pristine, not a single scratch in it, like to keep it that way😊

@@brentonpickens1872 I doubt Greg is lacking for customers, but he did say that his customer base goes for the colored ram lambs before the white which indicates that he has white ram lambs (and most likely white ewe lambs) available. If you prefer white, you can buy white then cull out any colored lambs until you have a flock that will throw mostly white sheep. Just a suggestion if you wanted some of Greg's parasite resistant genetics.
