This was so interesting, thank you! I am visiting Finland, doing an artist residency at an amazing place in the woods, and my paintings are being influenced very strongly by what I am learning about the traditions and mythology of this beautiful and fascinating culture. I watch your videos almost every day for research purposes. Kiitos!

This is a superb video! You display not only much knowledge about Finns but also a genuine LOVE for them. I am the American son of Finnish immigrant parents and I thank you for your deep devotion to my people.

Excellent video, here in Mexico there was a tradition of "plañideras " women who were hired to cry, pray, watch over the deceased, it was a tradition brought from Spain, currently it is no longer practiced. The reason why Christianity forbade lamentations is because they considered that it was a matter of pagans, since by lamenting they demonstrated that they did not have faith in Jesus Christ to be able to live in paradise, according to Christian beliefs, however, paradoxically these traditions still lived on, but unfortunately they are also being lost because the younger generations have no interest in it, which is sad :'(. I think the new enemy of these ancient traditions is not Christianity, but the globalization, modernism, post modernism and secularization.

Check out Meri by Varttina ;) I am sure the laments pre-dated Christianity by my Ancestors, Just a knowing.. The most important element of a lament should be that it comes from the heart.

"Where are the support payments delayed?" "How are we going to survive in our everyday needs?" "Is the good Lord going to come to our help?" She sings of such sorrows and cares. Beautifully paired with the Steinbeck quote! You did research this topic very well - thanks a lot! Here's music suitable to the ambience? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7V3aJqhnK_Dk4E.html

This may be a touchy subject but... parts of Karelia were seceded to the Soviets in the war. Do those Karelians consider themselves Finns, or Russians, or their own unique identity? As an American I'm completely ignorant, but would like to know more about that situation. Perhaps an idea for another video?

The Karelians of Finland in South Karelia and the migrant Karelians from the western parts of the former Vyborg county speak southeastern dialects belonging to the eastern dialects of the Finnish language. Finnish Karelians in North Karelia mainly speak the Savo dialects belonging to the eastern dialects of the Finnish language. Speakers of the Karelian language include Finnish Karelian speakers from the eastern parts of the former Viipur county in various parts of Finland, as well as the residents of some of the so-called Viena poetry villages, Kuhmo and Suomussalmi villages near the border of Finland and Russia in Kainuu province. In Russia, the areas where the Karelian people live are the Republic of Karelia and Tver Karelia, as well as parts of the Murmansk region and the Leningrad region. Karelians in Russia speak the Karelian language. In the Karelian language, the differences between the dialects are large. The main dialects are Karelian proper and Livvin Karelian. The Lydian language, which used to be considered a dialect of the Karelian language, is nowadays generally considered its own language.

The soviets expelled and ethnically cleansed what is now the Russian part of Karelia, and nowadays the vast majority of the inhabitants of the Russian republic of Karelia are ethnic russians. Somewhere less than 3% of the population can speak the Karelian language at this point
