Living the life of a monk, dealing with bruises and a daily trial of strength with an intimidating score: it takes a lot to climb the Everest of soprano roles. In this video portrait, we follow Barbara Hannigan during the first weeks of her preparations for Lulu. "I don't want to think about opening night, much less about closing night."

Simply amazing! Let me please comment on one aspect of the child abuse issue. Is the modern awareness so much something grown through the last 9 years? Like a new discovery? If the topic had been treated by major movie directors decennia earlier? Relating to works dating back to the 19th century In 1900 a novel appeared in Paris first as a printed book - diary of a chambermaid. In which the rape and killing of a girl is a central point. Written by Octave Mirbeau. Who had attended a Jesuit boarding school. From which he was expelled. The catholic education with it's various shades of abuse including rape he described in the novel Sébastien Roch (1890) Now the journal of a chamber maid was put to cinema 4 times. By directors including Jean Renoir and Luis Bunuel. Putting their fingers on all dirty details. Having studied in Berlin in the 1980ies, I remember sexual exploitation of children as something high on the agenda. A self-help organisation (Wildwasser) was very present in adds in Berlin underground cars (maybe that was in the early 1990ies?? Certainly long before MeToo) As the explicit use of Mirbeau' s material by 2 major directors shows, people were aware of that exact topic throughout the 20th century. The student revolution and feminism discours from the 1960ies put it further into public perception, originally often not in an way of deep understanding - to use a most euphemistic wording. With information public outrage grew! MeToo had the enormous merit of bringing awareness to an eveb bigger proportion of the population and stop some high-profile predators. On the other hand - some cases brought up - it seems rather cynical to put them next to the phenomenon so clearly described by Mirbeau. Mirbeau 's work, is it a ground-braking for public awareness? That I don't know at all. Also public awareness rarely is a work of just one person. Feminism consistently had a central role in the process Both Sébastian Roche and Le Journal d'une Femme de Chambre are very much worse to be read today! Even if or because Mirbeau 's approach is less noisy compared to what we've heard the last years. Possibly far more meaningful

An odd place to have this discussion, but anyway. There may have been the kind of awareness you remember, but there was also, in leftist groups, the belief that all sexual taboos such as incest or sexual abuse of children were tools by which the bourgeoisie would foster the self-conditioning of man for the capitalist order. You will surely remember the phrases and the movies (Claude Faraldo, Themroc etc.). For pederasts this was a great opportunity to guise something that was in fact pathological as an act of liberation. I admit, this does not explain why the first report on the Odenwaldschule (was ist 1999?) went unnoticed, whereas the second one (was it in 2007?) caused an uproar. Hannigan is right, the suddenness of the change is astonishing.
