Super craftsmanship Lance! I can appreciate great cabinet work... I did it for ten years besides many years of construction. I'm planning a chuck box for my wife and I this coming year. I'm going to add a little vintage to mine since several of my camping gear are old gas Coleman items. Thanks for the how to vid.

Besides being an excellent video, along with the shorter one... your comments near the end are right on. Your chuck box is built for your needs, mine should be built for mine. The basic structure is so good and watching you load it up allowed me to see how I would make or use the shelving differently. Btw, sweet job on the paper towel holder. Great, great job. I’ve been searching for small kitchen ideas for my one room cabin and I think this is the way to.

Lance, first thanks for sharing your camp box. I have wanted one for years but did not have a good plan. I built one very similar to yours and it works great. We went on a 6000 mile trip around our great country and every time we unloaded it people came over to our camp site to check it out. Thanks again for a great camp box.

Nice job on your kitchen/chuck box. Even though I purchased mine, they both work. It's nice to have a place for everything and everything in a place. The only problem I found with mine, the more I bring, the heavier it becomes. Cast Iron Kid

Great video and great ideas on the chuck box. I totally agree, each family or person has his or her own style and method of cooking, so no one box will fit all. Example: we usually don't cook until after dark (fall and winter) so my box includes "rope lights" for illumination. I use the rope light because they tend to attract less bugs and mosquitoes.

I really like this design. So much so I just finished building. After finishing I realize how freaking heavy it is. I am pretty sure mine isnt quite as tall so I could fit it in my popup.....this means yours is probably even heavier. Mine isnt even fully loaded with gear yet. Once loaded its going to take two people to move this bad boy around. If anything, I have some good ideas for the next one....lol. It needs to be more narrow to give you more leverage to pick it up. I thing taking the area with the coleman lantern away will be just right.
@One2ManyHobbies

William Robertson Awesome! Do you have any picture or video of it? I'd love to see it. Yes, it takes 2 people to move mine, I take it from the back of my pickup truck to my tent, thats it. I have some ideas for my 2nd one as well, to make it lighter, etc. Once this one's on its last leg, probably not got another 5 years or so, it's holding up well.

Nice box. I hope to build one similar soon. Suggestion: With your camp stove in the bottom your box's CG should be pretty low. You could lower your handles a bit so that when you are carrying it, the CG is higher and closer to your CG which makes heavy loads much easier to handle. You do not want the handles too low, top heavy is no good, but a little lower might help.

Exceptional cabinet making work, very well done! Laid out very well, and construction is solid. Love those two wings that open out for spice storage. Some feedback: 1. Get a nice paper towel rack, not that plastic one. A metal one would look so nice. 2. Don't be hung up on Coleman. They make mediocre products. So what if they are a 100 yr company. There is very little innovation and zero styling, and limited functionality. Try the latest Camp Chef stove instead. The Everest 2 is compact and going for $84 on Amazon now. This is 20,000 BTU per burner. The Coleman is 10,000 BTU per burner (they claim) and very poor gas output. Probably less than they claim. Cost is from $50 - $100 so not much difference. The other two are Camp Chef Blind Ranger II, and Camp Chef Everest 2X - both are bigger stoves with high BTUs. I find that the main requirement for a stove are compact size and high BTU output. The rest is nice to haves. The table is also very well crafted. A pleasure to look at this build. Very relevant many years later. Thank you.

Hi Lance, Thanks for sharing your hard work. I was wondering if you can explain how you created the stand. It that also rabbet and groove construction? Is there a cleat under the plywood that supports the box? I am assuming the stand top is recessed 1/2 inch from the edge to allow the door to open and close freely? One last question- did you seal the edges of the plywood? Are you concerned that they might come in contact with water from rain or such?

@One2ManyHobbies
@One2ManyHobbies 10 жыл бұрын
Bart, my stove dimensions are 23.25 x 5.5 x 14.75. That's exactly how I started build my box, then I added propane storage to the left, after that I went up with the storage, depends on what you want to store in the box, will factor you compartments. The height is roughly 36". once you've completed you box, then you can build you legs to fit over it, it's up to you how tall you want it to be. Good Luck!

As always, great work Lance. I think the only thing the could have made this better is if you filmed with both your Hero3 and a new Hero3+ at the same time then you could have cut to different camera angles during the same session like the pro's. Time to go Hollywood man! J/K. Keep them coming. Looking forward to see what comes out of the shop this woodworking season. I am just gearing up myself down here in Fort Worth.

6-24-15 Very nice job, I'd hate to take it out now and get it dirty. On a quick look, I would lower the silverware drawers, so you can see whats in them without having to remove the entire drawer. Also, I didn't see any mention of a finish and you've got to do that! Since you like the birch (so do I) just choose a durable clear coat. After typing all this I realized you probably have it done by now. Oh well again, nice job! So much better to watch than some kid wrack himself on a railing with a skateboard!

I'm also a woman. I did not know you needed a penis to build anything. Get cracking and quit making excuses for our gender. My Ex is a Structural Engineer. But I bought every tool in the garage and fixed everything and I'm a good DIYer. I can fix almost anything. I taught myself. He cannot hang a picture and he's a man. Do not make any more excuses for laziness. If you really want to do something, you will find a way. Start today. You can continue to delegate any build to others and be ripped off on prices or you can learn to do it yourself. Just dive into making things.
