Its time to do some service on the 1985 Lancia A112 Abarth.
The 1050ccm Fiat engine has come very close to wearing out its rotor and cap!
Its still running fine but its just a matter of time before a break down.

These little A100s are cool. I almost bought one while stationed in Japan but the deal fell through.

It's a metallic sound ...maybe a slack timing chain..

Does sound quite dieslly, usual causes of that are the timing being a bit off (maybe advance getting stuck?) or the fuel being a bit crap and igniting before it's supposed to, but I'm not an expert either, only dieselling I've experienced was when I ran paraffin (aka Kerosene) in a generator engine, and it dieselled on revving up from idle... :P

Timing was my initial thought too... sounds too advanced

Fuel is 100 octane.. the best I can get. But it could be... I got to look into the timing to be sure.

This is just a shot in the dark, but could it be the gear(s) driving the distributer, or a bent distributor shaft?

did you use strobe light for timing adjustment? With my a112 70hp strobe light was a life saver

I have that exact same noise with my Audi A3 1.0 tfsi - at low to medium throttle it makes this knocking dieselish noise, which almost completely disappears when it’s warm. It’s completely gone when it is wet outside. I realize this is a much newer car with a small turbo engine, but could there be something in common that makes this noise? The engine is running great, so I can’t really say that there is anything wrong.

It can be many things... wierd that it goes away when wet... but on a modern engine like that it could be valves, injectors or something more severe... but it could also be pre detonation.

It’s quite easy to hear the “diesel” sound on the video. It sounds almost like my Mini! If it’s not the valve train directly, could it be a cam follower? Or even worse, a rod knock? I doubt both things, since I saw how meticulous you were with checking the tolerances, when you built the engine… any way, looking nice!

It could be many things... I am not an pro after all.. But my guess is valve train related.... or maybe as some mention ignition timing... but that would surprise me!

@@SeasideGarage timing is a possibility, but I would doubt that. The only way it could be timing is if the dynamic advance as “stuck” at fully advanced (at least if it runs ok at high RPM). If it is timing, it should become more pronounced under load. If you don’t know what the static advance should be, you can test it quite easily, simply by finding a straight road, preferably a bit uphill, and then flooring it in 4th gear, maybe even while pulling the handbrake. If it starts “pinging”, try retarding the ignition slightly and do the test again. :)

I don´t know the compression ratio on this car, but since you have skimmed both the head and the block, maybe the compression is getting a little to high. Have you tried 100 octane fuel?
@SeasideGarage
@SeasideGarage 7 ай бұрын
I always run high octane in it :) Its very high compression from factory, and now even more so... at least 1 head and block skim!
