Come watch the entire tobacco harvesting process. You'll see the shearing off of the plants, the spearing onto the tobacco sticks (lath), the pickup and hanging on the wagons, and finally the hanging high in the rafters in the barn to begin its curing process. The Old Order Amish have been growing tobacco for almost 200 years. This tobacco you are seeing here is grown and sold as cigar wrapper tobacco. The biggest and best leaves will be outside wrapper of some of the finest cigars made in the world. The other leaves become filler or binder inside the cigar. While dairy farming helps the family survive and meet its every day bills, the tobacco pays the bank and has been historically known as the mortgage lifter.
