I am an actual mechanic in the air wing for the marine corps. I watched the F-35B video and also this one so far. I can 100% confirm that this is almost closest to the realistic flying that these pilots do (you can only do so much in a video game). Aviation is a big hobby for me and I am glad I got a job in it that will prep me for civilian jobs in the aviation world. I do plan on going the officer route to be a pilot myself. Brilliant demonstration, will really help when landing the Hawk and also my favourite jet at the moment, the F-22 Raptor. Superb, the Hawk will look complicated but such tutorials are essential for getting folks into this hobby before they ragequit in frustration. Mastering 'flying the donut' (yellow angle-of-attack indicator) is, of course, essential for those wishing to try their hand at aircraft carrier landings, as more than degree or so off in angle-of-attack and the hook won't catch the arrestor wires (and even more important in DCS with battle damage or heavy stores). I really enjoyed the in-flight landing calculations for the Hawk, which would get you to the right place even if cloud obscured the runway. 'American airframes', hhhm, does that mean we get to watch more of your F-35 missions ? if only we had the F-35's NATOPS, sigh. Your channel climbing through 10k subs, very well deserved !

Very informative vid as always Sir. Superb, thank you 👏 👍🏻 I think I've been doing all that automatically after flying sims for so long, especially on aircraft with a HUD. You just get used to the aircraft you're flying at that time, say F-16 or A10C. Add to that the fact I usually do a break for landing over the airfield and it's a totally different ball game than long final, ILS etc. However I do like testing myself in a good 'pea soup' situation with the ILS approaches. Main issue with most sims when it comes to approaches though is the Ai ATC! I personally think the best sim for approaches using ATC is BMS, and I just wish the other sims would follow suit. I believe that DCS are in the process of changing its ATC, however that's very old news and nothing seems to be on the horizon 😒 Once again though, an absolutely superb vid and very informative. Thanks for sharing 👌🙂

If I may, the most usefull approach training, in a sim, I got, was in DCS 2.5.X and 2.7.X with Mig21Bis module. In DCS, Fishbed is one of the more difficult fixed wings to land, not counting VTOL. So line up, as per instruction here, about 10km, but can be at 7km from threshold. Now be on speed at 400 kph (215 knots) 1/2 flaps, gear up, at 500 meters (1640 feet) AGL, but 1500 feet AGL works fine also. Aircraft can have a center tank (empty) and 2 X R-60, and 550 kg (1200 lbs of fuel) of fuel. Now adjust aircraft attitude so that top edge of nose intake, as seen from cockpit, is aligned with threshold. Now hold that attitude and descent rate until past inner marker. Full flaps, gear down and lock. Adjust attitude so that top of intake is at landing aim point, speed of 300 kph(160 knots), and hold that attitude. Over the threshhold at 50 meters, DO NOT fully retard, just back on throttle to slow down to 270kph (150 knots) and begin flare to 10 AOA, keep flying the aircraft. Let it settle with td speed of 250kph(130-135 knots) in ground effect, and hold nose up, letting it naturally settle. Pop drag chute. Gently let front gear to settle, don't release chute, apply gently wheel brakes. Old Soviet and even modern Russians prefer chute over brakes. DCS simulates brake heat fade. Works for DCS: for F-16, Mirage (except Mirage2KC has 12-14 AOA on approach and TD), and F/A-18C Hornet. A-10C has approach speed of 130-120 knots, and td speed of 100-110. I can do all these recoveries without HUD path marker.

Great video! I was taught: For 3 deg, simpler decent rate math is add a zero to your approach speed, and divide by half. For example, 120kts = 1200/2 = 600fpm. That will equal about a 3 deg descent rate. The add 50 is new to me. Prob more accurate, actually.

I agree that the Hawk needs 90% RPM with full flaps, otherwise it sinks like an anvil... It really needs that much power to approach with full flaps: they are strong air brakes! The F/A-18 is even easier, as the flaps are automatic regardless of up, mid or full. I managed 2,000,000 points at the carrier landing challenge. There are now moving carriers addons that make it fun to land on moving carriers on several great locations.

Loved this! Thank you for the easy maths for straight in approach glideslope! You say that it's easier in the F-18, but I find that getting the DCS F-18 on speed and configured in a downwind after a break is lots to do. One thing that I noticed in the F-18 HUD during your approach to Valley was that the indexer was showing on-AOA , but with the VV on 3deg nose down and the waterline at less than 2deg nose up (e.g. at 18:37). I thought that the F-18 AOA indexer shows on-AOA at 8.1deg alpha? In the DCS model, the waterline is normally at 5deg nose up pitch and the VV at 3 deg nose down for onspeed/on-AOA. Am I missing something here, or just over-thinking this?

Very useful as I have always eyeballed it till now (apart from the glide slope). What do you do to configure the F18 HUD for landing mode (you only seemed to select the TACAN - does that do it)?

Hello, I'm pretty good on the F18 and I think to know all her features on Mfs, but where can I find the manual to read? Another question, I see you have Tacan on, did you use the CSR Knob as well to align on the heading of the runway? when i use it, whatever Im flying or have the AP engaged, after a while, the course on the HSI disapper and no chance to get it back at all.

I've heard you and others mention 'alpha' but I'm not sure what that refers to. Also, I'm following this in X Plane 11 with the JustFlight Hawk, and I can't get the deviation line to show up. The distance is reading correctly, but that it. Does anyone know what I'm missing? I can get it to show up if I follow the ILS ...

I'm going to post a link to this video on the DCS channels, where the top guys that fly post their content. So many of them find landing and take offs difficult because they are simply eyeballing their flying, not using and tables or formulas, let alone using radio navigation assistance. It will also hammer home to those aspiring to be real fast jet pilots, that mastering mathematics is incredibly important to fly in the manner in which these aircraft demand. Seat of your pants flying doesn't work at all, the airplane gets bent or broken. When I see them tossing fully laden fighters all over the sky, upside down and flopping around to notch or position themselves in a panic, it is pure cringe. "That's how you rip your wing off... not dumping tanks and a/g ordinance before engaging in edge of the envelope BFM in a merge." Them : "Nah it'd be modeled if it were the case!" Me : 🙄 Thinking of all the g limit and roll rate limits for different loadouts and various altitudes and power settings.
