I was a college lecturer before I retired at Christmas and if I had done an observation for OFSTED I would have rated this as Outstanding! Something essentially quite complicated explained simply using a wide variety of delivery methods. You have definitely missed your calling. Well done, Guy.

Terrific video. The thing with the laser-pointer, especially, was a great way to demonstrate the potential problems. Buying wheels is really something that you shouldn't do sight-unseen - even if you're you're getting advice from a gazillion "experts" on the interweb. Either try and find somebody who's got wheels with the intended offset and try them on your own vehicle first or head to a supplier and ask them for advice. If you're a tight-fisted git, you can always tell the supplier that you'll "think about it" and then go and buy similar wheels for the best price off the interweb instead.

Excellent explanation of how the offset is hard on bearing and suspension components. I am a 30 year licensed tech, and the laser pointer idea was great! I may just steal that idea when explaining to customers, with your permission of course. :)

Hi Simon, Great video. I have a 2023 defender x with the upgraded brembo brakes which are quite large. Currently running on 9x22 stock rims that have 44.5mm offset. Looking at getting 9.5x21 oem rims for winter tires, with a 49mm offset. In the video you tried on 22" rims with 49mm offset which fits but was tight, and said you'll be getting a set of 21" rims. Did you end up doing that and if so did it fit? Thanks

Ha! Yet another reason why I'm a stickler for OEM. However, I learned a great deal from this video and it's good to know about the offset factor, which I've really never paid any attention to before. :-)

Simon, is there an acceptable tolerance. When you look a the range of fitment from a 19" to a 22" of an LR5, it goes from ET39 to ET 45. Is it possible to have a 19" with an ET 45?

Quick question i hope you can help with . . . I've just obtained a set of the LR 5093 18" Steel Wheels with off road tyres. These are a winter set to replace my 22" alloys. The question is, would the original landrover steel wheel nuts fit this arrangement, or is there a specific set for the newer steel wheels. And if so, do you sell them?? I appreciate the 22" alloy ones may not be used.

Interesting! I knew a little, but not to that depth, so thanks! I bought a D4 with aftermarket 20" wheels and low profile road tyres, been looking at getting some OE wheels back (didn't come with the old ones), but 18" for the tyre options and bigger sidewall for off-roading. I bought some a while back and they didn't fit because the calliper got in the way, so sold them again without exploring options. I've been told two things - either grind a few mm off the calliper or fit 25mm spacers on. Could you do a little vid on options like this? I hadn't considered the offset that spacers would cause, let alone just looking at whatever second hand OE LR 18" wheels I could find!
