Dear All,
Welcome back to the channel and a new video on the Landy. Having not touched the fluids since refilling them for the restoration, the time has definitely come to do so.
I discover some hidden treats in the oil and also find that the overdrive drain plug needs re-threading.
I have also included some footage of a green-lane drive which was excellent fun indeed. The first time the Landy has seen mud for over 20 years!
I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for your support. I look forward to hearing your comments.

Great to see you and the family out and about enjoying the Land Rover. Good luck with the over drive, alloy threads can be tricky. The one on my GM gearbox only has 9.2 Nm as its torque setting as it is alloy and that way it should be OK and not over tightened and stretched and destroyed. Good luck Joel.

I wrap the front driveshaft in cling film. Just peel it off after and everything is clean (ish). Also a modern oil filter adapter is nice.

Hi Nick, that’s a good idea. I am not aware of the adapter.
@mbrown6930

@@My911 It is the filter adapter from the early Defender 2.5 4-cyl petrol, part number ETC5347. It takes a standard Land Rover cartridge filter ERR3340 used on many other models. It makes filter changing much less fiddly and messy. The housings can be pricey. Apparently the 200TDI engine part can be used to similar effect, which are more readily available but using it on a 2.25 means various blanking plugs are required for the oil cooler ports.

It's great to hear the pleasure the children got out of the green laning! I had more or less the same piece of tooth come out of my gearbox. It was from the third gear. I'm on the lookout for a new set but will run with the missing tooth for a while, see how it goes.

It was great fun and as I say, my daughter learnt to drive. Looking forward to doing it again. Yes, it’s strange with the tooth, I am now not sure if it is left over from before but I would never have not cleaned that sump plug....

Shame about that damaged gear, it does look like 3rd gear. If there is a less messy way to change the oil filter, I haven't discovered it yet! By the way, it's definitely worth the extra few pounds for a genuine filter. I compared the blue box filter to a genuine one a few years ago and never used the cheaper part again. Looks like you are having great fun with the Land Rover, what it's all about!

Yes, I am pretty disappointed with the gear. I will have to look back to see if I replaced 3rd. I know I did second for sure. If I didn’t, perhaps it broke under the stress of the new parts? Who knows. I’ve done such little mileage but on the other hand two of my children have been learning to drive in it and each time it gets stalled I cringe a little. The running gear doesn’t like it. I will have to look inside at some point, but can’t face taking it apart again. Especially as it took me so long to put together. I bought the gear parts from the same place as you did back then. Thanks for the tip about the filter. I don’t like using the blue boxes. I am still finding suppliers over here and unfortunately genuine is harder to come by. But the next change I will go OEM come hell or high water. Ps, I like your plan with the later 2.5l motor. Good luck with the project and I will be watching. 👍 can’t wait to see the difference once it goes in.

I noticed you used Blu Hylomar... Being an Englishman in Botswana I imported that stuff to complete my nut and bolt restoration of my 88 2a, like your friends... It leaked in so many places after using the Hylomar... I replaced with normal off the shelf RTV sealant and that stopped the leaks... I used Hylomar as it is much hyped.... not sure if I would use again. If you get persistent leaks, the hylomar may the be the issue.

Hi, thanks for the tip. It isn’t very good, you are right. I will get some RTV. Interesting that you are out in Botswana. A friend of mine from school moved there when he was 13. 👍 Great News on the 2a. They are very cool vehicles.

@@SafariLifestyles Australia too has become "the land of the Toyota". Up until the early 1970's, Land Rover held 0ver 90% of the 4WD market in Australia but the Japanese copies have, since then, become the norm. I spent two years (2006/7/8) working in Central and Southern Africa and was pleased to see that Land Rovers were more common there than they now are in Australia. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Africa. Stay safe and enjoy your Series 2a.

I notice your SS exhaust turned the same colour as mine so I'm relieved that even though I polished it before fitting the sections....I thought maybe the polish I used had effected the colour....but I now don't think so after seeing yours and others.

My understanding is that a quality modern gear oil has anti foaming agents in it. That new lube you got probably has it already in it...✌️

Regarding the bit of broken gear, I would have thought that you would have heard it. When you overhauled the gearbox was the sump plug clean?
@Anderzander
@Anderzander 2 жыл бұрын
I was about to ask : are you certain you cleaned out that plug ? Is it possible that it was overlooked and that tooth is from before the rebuild ?
@My911
@My911 2 жыл бұрын
Guys, I am not sure but I can’t imagine that I wouldn’t have cleaned it. Saying that the sludge in the plug was pretty compacted which seams unlikely for such little use. I am hoping it’s from before 😀

@@My911 fingers crossed. Is it worth looking at your old footage? Also, could you get an endoscope in to the gearbox? They connect to your phone nowadays and are fairly cheap. Having said all that, I'd probably just run it and enjoy it and put it to the back of my mind...but that's just me...(",)

It’s a real shame about the over drive. Helix oil is a good repair - I think it would be a 9/16" x 12 UNC helicoil
