It still amazes me that anyone takes any notice of stories people put on KZfaq. Whilst I accept there's no knowing if that person who claims they've never had a problem with any of their Landrovers or Range Rovers, and I'm one of them, is telling the truth, I think it is far more likely that the people who claim they've had problems with Land Rover are making it up, because people who can't afford them, or just don't like the people that drive them, love to trash them. My own personal experience is that the theft issue is nowhere near as bad as it's made out to be, and certainly my insurance has not gone up significantly this year, and not at all last year, so I would advise not listening to everything you hear from unsubstantiated sources (and, of course, that includes me). One thing, however, that I don't understand is why people blame Land Rover for their suppliers' inability to supply parts. How is that Land Rover's fault? If Landrover have contracted with a supplier to provide a proprietary part, and included it in their design, how can they then source it elsewhere? And, again, it's not just affecting Landrover - it's just that you hear more about it because people scour the internet for stories about Landrovers - no one's interested if someone can't get in their cheap BMW.

I had the same dilemma after 13 years of range rovers. I leased an xc90 for 3 years which was great, then went for an approved used Maserati Levante 4x4 and it’s been superb. 2 years and 20k miles and it’s been faultless plus it’s got a Ferrari made engine. Sounds great and good value.

Chances of having the same misfortune are possible but probably small.BMW, Audi are decent brands but when you have the LR bug, you just gotta go with the flow. Just chopped a 12 year old L322 with 137,000 miles for a 2019 P400e RRsport 55,000miles.Prices were too tempting (£9k cheaper than September)and insurance @£1100 was reasonable(ish). Usual caveats: Warranty,£2k emergency slush fund and you'll be fine.

As someone said below Unreliable/Unrepairable. As you had trouble with yours they couldn’t fully repair my Discovery Sport. Also because they are so focused on going electric there is a shortage of parts to repair vehicles. Uninsurable. What’s the use of producing a product which costs more to insure per year than the vehicle costs. Perfect Storm.

I have always loved RR’s and have owned 3. I currently have a 4 yr old Sport 3.0, a stunning car. But it’s the service issues that will drive me away. Trying to get a dealer to respond speedily to an issue is nothing short of a nightmare. My local dealer quoted me a 5 week wait for a loan car and a 4 week wait to deal with a warranty issue. I took it to a more distant dealer and they eventually had it for over 8 weeks to diagnose an intermittent TCU problem. At least they gave me a loan vehicle. The dealer network is beset with staff shortages in their service department, both management and technician levels are affected. This results in a ridiculous degree of slow response. They told me that because my fault was intermittent it only showed on their diagnostic tool when it was actually faulting! So the vehicles memory of a previous fault and ability to report back on it is non existant. Yep, utter stupidity in my book too. I have now got the vehicle back and I love it, but, I am not putting up with this every time something goes wrong. Tomorrow I am test driving an Audi and I will get rid of a car I love.

Personally I’d ignore what people say… I had a Range Rover L322 years ago and yes I did have issues with it but I’d say the issues where down to previous owners lack of maintenance which unfortunately I caught the worst end of it 🙈. It was a very expensive ordeal BUT little did I know this car had not been maintained correctly, once I had it sent Land Rover they went over it and gave me the list and yes it was eye watering. When I weighed up the options with it I decided to get the work done and after that it was as reliable as any other car for many years….. You cant look at these types of cars and expect to pay the same running costs as a Ford fiesta. When I sold that some time later I’ve had different cars and went back into a RR My opinion as long as you have it serviced by a Land Rover specialist or main dealer regularly you’ll be ok. Just need to keep in mind it’s a big car with many components compared to other vehicles 👍

Makes me smile at your dilemma which as you’re aware I’m faced with the same issue. Right now I’m fuming mad with JLR. I’ve owned 13 different LR,s since about 2000 and something. Range Rovers have been by far the most reliable and best of the bunch. So after, maybe 5 months or more, of waiting for my D5 to be returned, my current mindset is I’d suggest to walk away and find another manufacturer, but, I know after 6 months I’ll be yearning for a LR again, as has happened in the past. I guess that’s where our hearts lie. L R do something phenomenal for your dissatisfied loyal supporters..😊

I’m in the same boat as you…. got extended warranty on my SVR and the front CV axles have diminished. The car has been there for a week and there’s no ETA on when the part will arrive. It’s giving me a stress headache to think about the fact i might have to wait months for a singular part to come in. just doesn’t make any sense how this is acceptable. but of course the dealerships don’t care as they can just keep giving out loaners for tax write offs!

A friend got sideswiped in his 18 month old Range Rover. He's been in a loan car for 3 months, waiting parts, and today got notice that the parts are on the way. I'm very keen on buying a Range Rover, given the drop in prices. Definitely a Euro-6. The RR seems to be as cheap as the RRS and Velar and D5, like for like, so much better value. I did look at the FFRR, RRS and Velar in the showroom recently, and whilst the front seats were all very comfortable, there was a lot of difference in the middle row space and comfort. I've got lots of grown-up children, so I think a FFRR would be the best option. We've had a D3 (for 250,000 miles), a Disco Sport (for 150,000 miles), so know that they suit us for family use, but now think that the FFRR is unbeatable value. I'm leaning towards a 4.4, 2016+, and probably a 2018/19 kind of (facelift) spec. I also want a late Defender 110, but know it would never fit the family requirement for long trips. They too seem to have really come down to sensible values, and would be great for me to tackle in a similar manner to your recent 90TD5

I have had 7 RR’s over the years. All Sports except for an Evoke and a Defender and I have a new RRS and full fat RR coming in next few weeks. My experience has been one alternator failure just outside warranty and that is it, no other issues. The theft issues as I understand, relates mostly to pre 2018/19 cars not the new ones so I’m not worried about theft. That said, RR have called both our current cars back for security updates, both done in a day. I don’t have any issues insuring the cars, maybe it’s where I live or my track record with insurer, who knows. Frankly with the price of Range Rovers currently I’d say buying a second hand one is a no brainer, you’ll have negligible depreciation over next couple of years. Oh and it’s not just Range Rovers that have suffered a drop in prices, all luxury cars have taken a beating.

I almost ordered a Defender 2yrs ago in March. Absolutely loved the utilitarian look and go anywhere factor. Dealership said, the more options you go for, the longer the wait. This ultimately put me off, so decided upon a Mercedes GLE. Only had to wait 4 months. I Absolutely love the car, despite having a number of warranty fixes such as light cluster water penetration in all of the rear light clusters to name a few. Even though the ride is phenomenal, and the sound system is mind-blowing. I STILL....for reasons I simply can't understand, I get distracted whenever I see a Range Rover equivalent parked up or driving alongside me, just why???

I am a big JLR fan boy but after a really bad experience with a Disco Sport and warranty issues in that to get to parts covered by warranty they had to break a door card that was not covered by warranty. After such part was broken we were informed it would be 4 months to source that part and at a cost of over £1k. After a long battle with customer services who gave us a Jaguar replacement vehicle and flew in a door card from Thailand the car was back on the road after 6 weeks and all covered by Land Rover. I remember our local Land Rover Assistance technician who we got to know quite well telling me that Jaguars were far more reliable. We are now on our second Jaguar and they have been fairly faultless. If you don't get another Land Rover you will always regret it as they are just on a different level in how they make you feel when you climb into them. Good luck.

Forget looking at the new shiny tata models that have all the problems and as you sayand that question in the back of your mind (will this engine go bang) and go back to a 4..they still have it.. they have it all..its the last true discovery

These cars are so complex, that even the LR techs can't sort problems out. There are plenty of other Lr channels that have highlighted this. One guy spent 16k on repairs over 3 years. You have to be rich enough to buy a new one, run it for 3 years, then change it and not worry about the hit. The only other option is to be a repair minded with a fully stocked workshop as do Christian and Vera in LR time. I have an old defender, and I would not entertain a modern LR.

I’ve had 18 Range Rovers, Sports and a couple of Discovery’s all the way back to when Range Rovers were first introduced. The first ones were a nightmare, I was in the garage every month, but I stuck with them. The later ones were OK but the biggest issue were electronics. Two years ago I purchased a Jaguar F Pace, a great car with the 3 litre engine but so boring. I now have a Defender which is a great car with road presence and so far no issues.

For me it's about longevity I want a car that will last 5 - 8 years can see the appeal of a D300 engine in a Discovery, Defender or Range Rover. I might go for an older 2017 VW Touareg with air suspension, low range and centre and rear locking diffs. I looked at Q7 but driving position isn't as good and neither is off-road ability. Looked at Grenadier but steering and on road are poor. Very difficult but Range Rovers will be very expensive to insure......good luck hope you get your vehicle back soon

They might be ok in the UK for short journeys but people who live on properties that are 100 kilometres from the nearest town would never contemplate owning a Range Rover or any Land Rover product, ever. Doc, don't you think that if you buy another Discovery, or even a Range Rover, while you're out and about driving it, in the back of your mind you'll be thinking🤔...when is it going to Breakdown on me.Don't be taken in by the Royal family having a fleet of Range Rovers, Defenders and Discovery's at their disposal, remember when Prince Philip wrote off his Freelander, JLR had a Brand New replacement delivered the very next day on a low loader for him, that's because the Royal family are Ambassadors for the JLR Brand. We are just Plebs to JLR, and will never experience that sort of Service ever from JLR, unfortunately. Buy something reliable Doc, buy a Toyota or a Honda, you know it makes sense. Forget the status symbol factor when you own a Range Rover or Discovery, that means nothing when you're broken-down at the side of the road waiting for the AA or RAC man to arrive, or you're standing in the pouring rain on the hard shoulder of a Motorway.

Same temptation, same fears. Definately good value deals out there but a lot of risk or do I just keep my D3 ?

Ostentatious & overpriced when you rent it because you think it makes you look good … but if your a land owner/ working family using a trailer then your practical and not vain. Other than that I think the quality is superficial trim doesn’t wear , cheap Chinese tin wiring looms of endless issues with the depreciation i could buy two purposeful cars ! That’s why the Toyota Landcruiser wins hands down in every way .

A new Range Rover D300 sport might be the way forward for you. Probably the best value and three years warranty.

Have they given you a courtsey car ? Most normal people cat do without their car for 6 months especially when they've spent 100k on it !! In the real world their would be a a huge claim for a hire Landrover for you whilst tours is off the road . If like to know the full story Land rover seem to operate in a parallel universe IMO. Get a Mazda CX 70.

Dont believe people do. They are expensive and not worth the money. Only idiots buy them. I see a Range Rover and I think oh dear another mug.

We have five on our farm (1995-2020) and nearly every farmer nearby also has one or more rangerovers. Exceptional work vehicles and a dam good drive too . I might suggest that we are not idiots as you state. They have all been extremely reliable despite the battering they get. If they are as bad as you seem to think it stands to reason none of us would waste money on cars that don’t work. I personally have owned 9 rangerovers and all have been excellent in terms of reliability. How many have you owned to form such an opinion?

They’re great if you have unlimited money for repairs, and loan cars while it’s in the garage, and if you don’t actually need to arrive at any of your destinations. Haha. Good luck.
