A look at the operation of landing gear latches. Up locks and down locks hold the landing gear in place so it does not move contrary to the pilot's commands.

Lot complex mechanism would be reduced if replaced by elongated ~mudguard size of tyretrain isolating inner deck machine exposure , & a simpler retracting mechanism with tyres along Axis of plane similar to nose wheel...

so basically uplocks and downlocks hold the landing gear to it's corresponding position

Yes, with uplocks typically being a mechanical hook-type mechanism and downlocks being over-center brace mechanisms.

The Failure of of these systems resulted in the loss several P-51 mustangs in WW2. It seems that the planes were not equipped with the correct 'Uplock' mechanisms.
