I hate when game covers have seals and awards, especially on the front cover. I’m sure it sells games and everyone will keep doing it but it always looks worse

My favorite game of the year. Absolutely charming, with the single best save/set-up and campaign system ever made in a board game. Everything about this game is an absolute delight. It's pure, effortless fun.

So another case of Saami innovating clever tweaks on existing mechanics(Legacy in this, deckbuilding in DoM), rather than simply following like many others?

@@revimfadli4666It's not a legacy, the game's world can be restored to the beginning and it doesn't have stickers for a map or something.

Excellent review. Sami Laasko is not just an excellent designer but always seems to go out of his way to provide a good service too. Dale of Merchants is also an amazing deckbuilder.

It's almost as if Sami Laakso felt like plain paragraphs weren't enough to describe the world he built around Dale of Merchant so he made a game for it. His standard for production perfection and forward thinking in Dale of Merchant reflect equally in this game.

Absolutely agree! Great review! One note... kids can play this however just note, they will be making a lot of sketchy decisions... many times theft, burglary, and intimidation are common (almost encouraged) options in the game. So just take that into account for your family. :)

Thank you very much. You guys doing a great job! I was at the point to order ist from Spain (my wife is peruvian) and before I hit the button I´ve decided to look for some reviews. I appreciate the work they´ve done here, but Im looking for an adventure game with more mechanics (like Pandemic Season 0). A big hug

I absolutely love and adore this game. It is just so much fun and entertaining with a story that sucked me in entirely. For me, it is food for the heart and a cosy vacation packed into the body of the River Kingfisher I never knew I wanted to be.

There is a setting in the app to have everything read by the app. You don’t have to read everything if you don’t want to.

I had to decide between this and Arydia: The Paths we Dare Tread back in Summer of 2021 and I chose the latter. Glad to hear this one came out alright in the end.

Had this game in the cart from the publisher's website for the last few days but couldn't pull the trigger for ~$110 USD with shipping. Told myself before clicking on this video, if it gets at least 2/3 seals of excellence, I'm in. Time to go donate some plasma to refill my gaming budget.

I don't believe I heard anyone mention the point system. I felt it is something I use to gauge the amount of successes I rolled during my session but not the degree to which I "won" the game.

Great review, but I would have liked some comments on player interaction. To me it seems like everyone is pretty much playing their own little adventure with little to no interaction at all. Is that accurate?

Mike had mentioned in the beginning of this video that there was only 1 game of this kind that he'd place higher than this one? i fi understood him correctly...i kept waiting to hear that title wondering if it fits this theme or not because unlike Zee, this everdell redwall watership vibe is soo what i look for in excellent games

What’s the goal of the game? How do you win? Heard someone else say there’s a coop mode and a competitive mode. Don’t really understand the goal or when the game ends.

It’s a fixed number of rounds depending on the number of players. You’re constantly solving quests and little random encounters, and earn points for successfully closing them out. But the score is kind of secondary, just hearing how things play out is kind of its own reward. The only real difference between competitive and cooperative is whether you compare scores at the end, or add them up and gauge success on the total.

Questions for those that have played it: Does it work with players swapping in and out between sessions? Or is it better to have the same group each time? Also solo any good?

We designed the game with players swapping between sessions. It's best if the same players use the same adventurers from a game to game, but even that is optional. It was really important to us for the game to be as easy to get on the table as possible. 😊

@@cailin5301 Some stories can include quite heavy topics, but if you read them yourself, you can adjust them on the fly if needed. I've heard people playing the game with about 10-year-olds. 🙂

Another note is you will never upgrade your skills to become godly you can only adjust them from time to time. I usually spread them out so I get at least one or two colored dice for every check instead of focusing on one or two traits. How did you manage your skills?

Zee was right about some of the location names sound middle-eastern. two of them, Yezden and Chabahr, seem to be derived of cities Yazd and Chabahar in Iran. also their relative position on the board is somewhat accurate compared to the real cities.

I'm surprised this one wasn't mentioned in any of the top 10 lists for top 2022 games of the year as there seemed to be a lot of anticipation by some of the folks at the dice tower for it.

Yeah there’s definitely going to be an expansion, because the rulebook has 2 more playable characters that didn’t come with the game.

Legacy of Dragonholt started off great and within two hours disintegrated into boredom and repetition and some gnome wedding that never ended. I traded it out I was so annoyed.

How does it compare to Destinies?

Love both - this is a persistent world with "chapters" and no set story arc vs Destinies narrative campaign. Similar to Destinies in the movement/exploration/encounter mechanics and die rolling skill checks. Biggest difference is the tone - this is much lighter than Galzyr's animal character populated fantasy world. I haven't tried Galzyr competitively so I can't speak to that aspect.

I'm not interested in an app based game unless they provide a permanent source for the app so you can keep a copy and side load it instead of depending on the app store. The companion app for Dead of Winter is no longer available. It isn't needed to play the game but it serves as a warning that a part of the game can suddenly disappear.

You can download the entire quest book to your device, so it’s not an issue.

@@roberteltze4850 yes, that’s what I meant. It’s not an app that you download from the App Store. It’s a website. You can download the whole thing to your PC for use whenever.
