On Day 1 of my Death Valley National Park 2018 trip, I solo backpacked out to the Panamint Dunes with my Intrepid 8x10" large format film camera and video gear to make some new landscape images.
My name is Justin Lowery and I'm a fine art landscape photographer working primarily in large format film. I've been creating images on a professional level for about 13 years, and have made around 2 million images. My work has been published in The British Journal of Photography, American Photo, Popular Photography, Landscape Photography Magazine and others, and featured by Canon, Fujifilm and Intrepid in ads for their cameras.
Join me on my adventures as I explore the world through the medium of photography, and learn along the way! You can expect trip videos like this one, how-tos, gear reviews and advice, and other related content around the topic of film photography, landscape photography, hiking, and adventure travel.

Glad to find your videos! I love landscape and large format photography as well, and hiking etc. While I used to climb mountains, run marathons, and really enjoy physically demanding adventures... unfortunately I broke my legs in a climbing accident and can barely walk around my tiny apartment today. I’m still glad to walk and be alive though! So when the struggle of carrying a 50lb pack in a flat cool desert landscape hits you again, please consider doing it for all those who cannot, and focus on the _positive_ aspects like the blessing of having the opportunity and physical ability to explore new beautiful landscapes and especially the journey to them!

Getting to locations like that is exactly why I spent the last two years rebuilding an old 4runner.

I love the photos, you capture the beauty of Death Valley. Although, the soap opera that you went through made me laugh. Keep posting and sharing please.

Great job on your video! The images are simply beautiful, and composed effectively. Really like the black and white images. Might miss color when you show us sunrise, but these are great. Congrats on surviving the night. Look forward to your next video.

Great that you started making video journals! Just small hint from my side: music seems too loud on your walking part of video. With wind added it's hard to hear what you are saying. Looking forward to see following days!

So cool to see you making the videos in the field now Justin. I look forward to Day 2. How much water did you carry with you? I imagine that based on your experience hiking with the video kit as well as the 8x10 kit and gear, you'll be somewhat impressed that my pack for my next trip is only 45lbs with a weeks worth of food & supplies. :-)

Dumb question...…….."Looks like you were driving a 4 wheel drive SUV. Was it not possible/practical to air down the tires and drive closer (say within a 100 yards) of your location?" Salute...…...to you and anybody who's shooting medium and large format film photography. I respect the craft, thought, and process.

Death Valley has been on my bucket list for 20+ years. Thanks for posting. Beautiful photos well worth the hike and sand storm. I agree with you B&W is a much better in this situation than color. How much water did you have take with you? Normal recommendations is gallon a day which means you should have had at least one gallon but to be safe you should 1.5-2 gallons (which is a lot of weight).

Pretty impressive Justin. It would be great for viewers like us if the videos are 10-12 min range, felt a bit stretched. Will be looking at your rest of the works. Thanks.

Glad to see the Intrepid 8x10 delivered such wonderful images. Did you use the Intrepid film holders? Did you use much rear or front standard movements? Which lens did you use? Thanks in advance.

Can you not just drive? Sounds like nobody's around, so what's preventing you from just taking the car the extra four miles?

You need another film holder... :) More seriously, why not use a two wheeled cart to carry the load? Are they not allowed out there? I'm 60 and while I could carry 50 lbs four miles, it wouldn't make me happy!
