My favourite composition aid is the rule of thirds. When I was first starting out as a photographer (nearly 15 years ago now) it helped me to drastically improve my compositions.
I still refer to it today often looking to push my subject to one side and fill the upper third of the frame with sky.
It is a little controversial and many experienced photographers do not like it.
However, it is very effective in helping novice photographers to create more interesting compositions.
It might not be perfect, but it is a great starting point.
