In this video I travel high into the mountains to do some HDR photography as the sun is rising and causing a high dynamic range scene in the photo. The only way to take this type of photo is by bracketing in the camera and taking a series of photos that I will later convert into an HDR photo in Adobe Lightroom.

Excellent video👍it’s just appeared in my feed. I’m relatively new to HDR and discovered by experimenting that -2 and +2 are the perfect settings which is what you’re using. I really enjoyed your clear presentation manner and thank you for the advice.

Absolutely gorgeous shot and a great informational video, my friend. As always, you use HDR so judiciously as to not make it look fake or overdone. This is something that everyone should learn from. Well done!

I use hdr photography I usually auto bracket 3 images, keeping my settings simple I shoot in aperture priority mode, so I don't have to bother about changing my shutter speed in every situation of changing lights

I use 5 w diff of 1, and merge them all 😯 Earlier I used photomatix, but lately I’ve used photoshop to create the HDR, as I find it easier to make it look more natural. Great job on the video and photo 👌🏻

I am the same with you. Photoshop or Lightroom creates a very natural looking HDR. Thanks for writing missThorlin.

Yes I do shoot HDR's; and when editing my photos, I use Camera RAW (a part of Photoshop). I like it better than LR.

I usually take five images, each one stop apart. When I merge them I select the three that I think will work best I use Photomatix to create my HDR images.

Thanks Thomas. I used to use Photomatix to create my HDR but I found that it resulted in a little too much of an HDR look. Perhaps that has changed now with the newer versions. Thanks for your comment!

The original version did but they have added the ability to do a lot of tweaking after the composite is generated.

Very nice natural-looking HDR landscape shot Tim. I have been doing HDR images for a few years. I use a plug-in called LR/Enfuse and I've stuck with it even after Adobe included HDR processing in Lightroom. It creates a rather flat file with no true blacks but I find it a good starting point. You can also use LR/Enfuse for focus-stacking as well. I bracket anything from 3 - 9 shots (1-2 stops apart) depending on the dynamic range of the scene. I have used Photomatix in the past but didn't really like it.

My Canon 80d does the bracketing and produces the HDR composit image. It works well most of the time

I use 3 photos in the bracket. Merge in Aurora 2019 - usually using the naturally merged image rather than the presets. I then export a Tiff back to LR and do most of my editing on that.

I use a slightly new & different method. Instead of using the cameras bracketed set, I turn on Live-View, pull up the Histogram and adjust dial to the negative until its not touching the side. I then take a shot and then start moving it toward the right 1=step at a time and take shots until the right side is off the right side and take my final shot. This provides me with a very wide dynamic range with no blown highlights or locked shadows.

@@TimShieldsPhotography If you decide to use this method and like it and want to share it with your followers you should make another vlog about this method. I'm sure others have discovered this on there own, so I can't state that it was my idea.

Because I'm just getting back into photography, i noticed you licked with your remote, quickly but you mentioned you were bracketing. I have a mirrorless camera Z50, so when did you change your settings for each of the brackets ?

Hi Tim, I am using D800 which only allows me to set the max. increment of 1 EV. Therefore, I have to bracket 5 photos in order to get sufficient range of exposure for HDR photo. I understand that D850 can select 1, 2 or 3 EV increment, so I could shot 3 photos to get the same range of exposure as D800 did after I have upgraded to D850 That could help me to save computer memory and processing time as well. Could you advise me what is the increment setting of your bracketing photos? I am using Photomatix to process the HDR and what is yours?

Do you know if the processed results are any different in Lightroom's HDR merge from using 3 images (-1, 0, +1) and 5 images (-2, -1, 0, +1, +2)? I'm not expert in this technique, and have always stood there at the tripod wondering if I should do 1 stop or 2, you know?

Tim, when I shoot HDR on my Nikon D500 I shoot 3,5 or 7 shots, but I press the trigger once and the camera auto takes all the pics. Is there a reason why you press the shutter button multiple times ? Is that a personal preference?
@TimShieldsPhotography
@TimShieldsPhotography 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Hunter, if I was bracketing with 7 shots then I would set up the camera in the same way you do so one shutter push would fire off 7 pictures. But with just 3 bracketed images, I don't mind pressing the shutter 3 times. There is so much dynamic range in modern SLR cameras that I find 3 bracketed images at 2 EV each to be more than enough dynamic range for any usual composition as long as I am checking the histogram to ensure the dark photo is not close to the right side and the bright photo is not close to the left side. One thing that I don't like is when a sudden photo op presents itself and I take a quick picture only to discover my settings are completely out of whack because it is still set up for the astro shoot from the previous night, or bracketing is still on from the last shoot, so I minimize going into the menu and changing settings that I will have to remember to change back once the shoot is over. I have ruined so many good photos because I didn't zero out the camera first. I actually made a video about about this principle.... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b9Kfo8diqZjMdoE.html
