Landscape Photography on Location | INCREDIBLE conditions at Great Sand Dunes National Park

I was excited when I was able to get backcountry camping permits for two nights at Great Sand Dunes National Park. As the days neared, I became both nervous and excited when I saw the forecast. Snow. Rain. Thunderstorms. High winds. I knew this would most likely be many hours of driving just to be frozen and miserable. In all likelihood, my camera would never leave the bag. But maybe, just maybe, it could be amazing conditions for landscape photography. I knew I couldn't pass up the opportunity. I am so happy I didn't.

I live close to White Sands, NM. When they used to have back country camping out in the dunes, I carried 6 empty sand bags. I filled them with sand and tossed them in my tent. They weigh practically nothing and I just emptied the sand out when I was packing up and reused them next trip. I spent one miserable night similar to yours. Great video!

Oh my… that is BRILLIANT! I am going to pin this comment and I’m 100% doing that next time haha. Also, I think white sands is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. I can’t wait to go back. I really hope they bring back the backcountry permits because I spent way too much on early entry permits last time.

@@MrNegative Yeah, supposedly they shut it down to do some maintenance. That was four years ago. I’ve been out there several times and absolutely nothing has been done. It was a a very unique location for Milky Way photography with the added bonus of a sunset & sunrise…

I think when I asked they said they were doing a study on the impact of camping on the area but four years seems like a lot… I really hope they bring it back because shooting Astro there would be incredible

I could hear the sand in your tripod half way through the video. Brutal place that's hard on equipment! I'm fortunate to live not far from 'The Dunes' so visit them as often as I can. I have to give you your flowers...this is the best video I've seen from there. Not many others will do what you did to get those great images. Subscribed!

I REALLY enjoyed this video! I could feel your sense of urgency at 8:30 on forward. Mother Nature kicked your @ss, but you were rewarded with some kick @ss images.

13:00. I’d have gotten a telephoto shot just on the part of the dune where the sand was blowing, using the edge of the dune as a leading line and trying different shutter speeds and waiting for different patterns just as you would with spraying water. But, hey, you’re the one who hiked out there, and it’s not like you didn’t come back with some great stuff. I really like that you didn’t mess with the shot in post at 18:30 to get that warm glow you wanted. I agree: in true landscape photography, you got what you got, and post should only emphasize what’s already there.

I think you’re spot on. In general I think dunes are best shot telephoto focusing on the details. Just about all the dunes images in my portfolio are telephoto and I had hoped to get some wider shots on this trip. Especially some that included the mountains. I was trying to force that to work and it just wasn’t. I agree on the warm glow. Not to mention there’s no amount of processing that will ever actually replicate that light. It’s either there or it’s not.

You got a different way of composing dune shots than people typically go for.. it works and looks good. Guess I gotta get one of those permits and get out there.. shooting from the perimeter is easy but you're proving hard work pays off.

Just found your channel and am enjoying catching up on your great content. Gotta say...I was cringing big time when you were changing your lens...didn't even try to shield it with the sand and wind whipping around...yikes! Hard to watch...good stuff though and I appreciate content creators like you! Thank you!

Haha! Yeah I’m not the kindest to my Gear… but to be fair this camera and lenses have been with me for 6-7 years and have seen countless dunes and even been soaked in sea water a few times so they’ve earned their retirement by now. I’m much more careful with the new camera I promise!

I'm gonna be visiting Trinidad, CO in a couple weeks. Planning on trying to shoot the dunes, any other places in the south/Trinidad area I should check out?

Nice! I hope you get good conditions. I honestly haven’t explored much outside the dunes. Another commenter mentioned some of the hikes in the park past the dunes being great as well but I haven’t done those yet either. I hope you get some solid images!
