James, thank you for the feedback! Part of the problem in this video is that I left my ISO fixed rather than on Auto, so it basically way overexposed the footage. I tried to recover as much as I could, but my video editing isn't exactly outstanding. Still, that's great feedback I will try a rendition of the edit with less contrast and a pull back on the color and see if that makes me like it more. I am also having an issue with the color space matching between my images and the video. I'm noticing the images I show in the video look darker and have more contrast than they do in photoshop. I'd say they're almost a half stop darker. If I were doing a better job keeping my website up to date, I would send you a link to it so you could see what the images are supposed to look like and see what I mean haha. Thanks for watching and commenting, appreciated as always!

Great images. That second composition is just fantastic! Tough call between the b&w and color versions though. If I had to pick one as a print for the wall I’d likely lean towards the color version. Both are great though. Also, love the hiking in the videos. I think it helps the viewer get a good feel for the broader location as well as the work behind the shots as you say. Thanks!

I'll take the mid-ground and say I like both the color and B&W renditions of the last image. I like footage of your hiking as well as the walk through on the images. Lazy bastard? I hardly think so, as we have seen you "earn your keep" on more than one occasion by battling a "raging mother nature" to get the shot.

Haha that’s fair. As we speak I’m developing film from my last hike at Rocky Mountain national park which absolutely whooped me. I go back and forth between which version I like so the mid ground is a safe strategy. Thanks as always for watching and commenting, David!

Man that was an epic intro view! Those are some spectacular views along the hike, AND for dinner at 3:14! Wow. Beautiful panos, as always! Are you enjoying that built in 65:24 ratio for composition planning?
@MrNegative
@MrNegative 23 күн бұрын
Best hike I’ve ever done for sure. Incredible place. You know I honestly haven’t used the built in aspect ratios at all. I really should. I’ve largely stuck to the same process for capturing panos o used with the canon but you’re right it would be a great tool to dial in the composition. I underestimated how large the panos files would be.. the sunrise image without any enlarging would print roughly 11’x4’ at 300ppi!
@brianbeattyphotography
@brianbeattyphotography 23 күн бұрын
@@MrNegative haha! yeah I figured it would be an outrageous size on those given the resolution there. You can still probably get a killer 1'x3' print with the built-in pano. Would be a good option for when you don't want to blow up your computer!

Thank you, David! The tripod is rock solid but you’re 100% right I should have gone for a faster shutter speed. The first shot is actually a little soft because my shutter speed wasn’t fast enough. Now that I’m not using the 5DSr anymore I need to get comfortable with boosting that ISO and shortening the shutter speed.

I have way too much issues with rollers picking up ink and i had to switch to spraying 🫤😥
@MrNegative
@MrNegative 24 күн бұрын
I also pretty much exclusively spray my prints but the ink lifting issue sounds more like a problem with your paper. I’ve had to stop using certain paper types as they were prone to having this issue. My best guess is something during manufacturing leaving dust/fibers on the print. After printing, the particle falls off and the ink with it. Are you printing from rolls of paper or sheets?
@calebplumleeoutdoors
@calebplumleeoutdoors 24 күн бұрын
@MrNegative I print off of rolls in a very clean environment. I also print on various types of canvas and photo papers. I've also experimented with short and long dry/cure times. Some media is worse than others, but pretty much all I've tried still has ink lift when rolling. Might not see it on small prints, but the rollers come out colored on all large prints. This is using Canon 12 color inks BTW. Seems breathing colors "timless" varnishes just won't roll without ink lift for me at all. It doesn't really affect the appearance, but I know it's happening and it bothers me
@MrNegative
@MrNegative 24 күн бұрын
@calebplumleeoutdoors ah you mean you see color on the roller not that there’s flecks of ink leaving the paper. Yes you’re 100% right I have noticed that as well when using a roller. It never seemed to be significant enough to change the appearance of the print but I can see why you’d not want to roll them for that reason. I spray the prints just because I like the finished look better and because on large prints I found rolling them to be difficult. I did do a newer video on my process for spraying in case that’s helpful. Varnishing the prints is definitely a much more difficult process than laminating but I think the final product is worth it.

Thank you Luis! I don’t have coordinates or anything but it’s a short hike originating from Refugio Auronzo. There are a few Refugio’s in that area but auronzo is closest and has a parking lot there. If you are planning a day trip, be sure to arrive BEFORE 8AM. The parking lots fill very fast and get long lines. We took the bus in and our bus got caught in a very long line. I should also note we were there one week before the “busy season” technically starts. If you go in July-sept I’d expect that lot to fill even earlier.

Haha oh you’re asking the wrong person, james! I’m still trying to learn how to focus the dang thing. I absolutely love this camera but haven’t taken the time yet to learn all the functions. I’m currently in the Dolomites and feel like every day of this trip I’ve learned of some function I either didn’t know about or had on the wrong setting haha. From what I read, the electronic shutter is best for tripod use on non-moving objects. But there are several types of electronic shutter and I haven’t yet begun to understand them. When I get back in the states I’ll do some testing on the shutter types and let you know what I learn. Good question!

Nice images! Were all of the initial images (with the moving stream in the foreground) focus stacked? I was curious as to where you focused otherwise. I guess once you get used to the Fuji menu system, you'll get rid of that obnoxious beep before the timed shutter is released.
@MrNegative
@MrNegative Ай бұрын
Haha oh man that stupid beep! I’m in the field for the next two weeks and the FIRST thing I did is sit down and figure out how to turn that off. So yes it’ll be off going forward:) so on those initial shots I did focus stack but as I mentioned I had the manual focus overriding so although I thought I was shooting one for the flowers, one for the tree and one for the peaks, it was only focused for the tree. However because I was at f11 and pretty far away, the flowers were mostly still sharp. The peaks are a bit soft. Tough lesson to learn!

October is such a great time in the park! The water levels will be much lower but that’s nice because it will have a few areas where there are exposed sand that you can shoot from and get right in the middle of the water. But in my opinion this area won’t be the best for fall color (the grasses are a beautiful golden color but there’s not much else). A few of the alpine lakes have some gorgeous fall color (loch vale, Helene to name a couple). My favorite month in the park!

Just found your channel and am enjoying the content. One thing to keep in mind when comparing those cost of outsourcing vs. doing it all yourself is your time invested. When your outsourcing for anything you're paying for their incurred labor but you also need to include that in your own pricing estimates. Don't sell yourself short. Any time you're spending on the that whole process is time missed out shooting and creating. I prefer to do as much of it (printing, finishing, matting & framing) as well but going on 60 one of the most important things in my life now is my time.

Those are excellent points. It’s something I have struggled with as often I’ll pass on going out to shoot because I’ll think of the backlog of work I still have ahead of me (developing and scanning film, processing etc.) and decide I don’t want to add to the backlog.
