In this video, I return to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia to capture a summer image of Mabry Mill. Although I have photographed this mill before, several years have passed. The mill has deteriorated slightly, and the water levels are low, eliminating the chance for the incredible reflections I took for granted in the past. Throughout the video, I share many tips and lessons learned in the art of sunrise photography.

I like the shot at the end. That shaft of golden light works, and it sparks curiosity.

Very nice image of the water mill. I like the trees, grass, water and the old wood structure view, it is very pleasant to look at. Great video.

You make such a good point - a revisit doesn’t always mean it’ll be better. Often, my first shot, when I’m filled with doubt, is my best. I can go back again and again, but never beat my first visit.

That’s so often true! I hope to make it back one day for an autumn image. Thanks for the support, Peter!

Another good video. Change is never ending, and as landscape photographers revisiting, a site will always bring change. I like the way you explained it. I do enjoy the image that you captured.

I think the image you created looks nice using great composition to exclude the water.

It is amazing how much a place can change between the seasons and over the years. I think many lose the value of photography and act like it's only about getting the perfect image at the perfect time. To me photography is more about capturing something the way it was when I was there and knowing it will never be that same way ever again. I've shot the mill several times but don't think I've ever seen the pond like that. But I really like the shot you got of it. Nice video!

Anthony, Great point! I strive to express in the photograph what a saw and felt at that moment. It's knowing that we are capturing a moment in time that will never be the same again. Thank you for the kind comment, and thanks for watching.

Your 360 degree inspection is what I call "border patrol". 🙂 It may be more related to lack of confidence on my part, but I tend to set up and then periodically shoot while waiting for the light and watching various elements of the scene. Sometimes I've been lucky in getting something I can use later, even if it's not my primary exposure. At worst I have a few more files to delete.

Border patrol 🤔 that’s interesting. Never heard that before. That makes me want to give my inspection a name. Hum 🤔 Thanks for watching!

My favorite picture of the Mill is the one with more of the fence in the foreground. But they are all great.

Hi, I'm new to this channel but after watching this video I already like it and subscribed. Landscape photography is one of my favorite subjects, so I follow quite a few photographers in that field. Looking forward to view your earlier videos and the ones that are yet to come!

I can see why you used a long lens with a great result, the earlier shots when the water was up and reflections were prominent are a good comparison and reason why you should get the shot on the day if you can. I wonder if your approach would be similar if you came across that scene for the first time with the low water level, irrespective, just to get out and do it is a winner ! enjoy your videos & narrative.

Nice thought 🤔 I’m not sure how would approach it if it were my first time today. But like you said, just being there is what it’s all about 😀

Why not shoot in aperture priority and let the camera change your shutter speed. ?

Excellent question! Most of the landscapes I shoot are in low light with dark shadows. I find that underexposing gives me the most control over the exposure. As I often say, shoot the right (ETTR) and expose for the highlights. Priority modes usually result in a slight overexposure. Of course, one can always use exposure compensation in this situation. Nevertheless, I prefer manual mode, primarily because of habit, but I sometimes forget to remove the exposure compensation, which has caught me off guard before on subsequent shots 😀 Thanks for watching!

As tough as landscape can be, it can take a long drive and hike to get to the location unless something dramatic happens the location will still be there for a period of time, being involved with event photography for a number of years, I have to say that wedding photography is the hardest, many times during the day you have to capture a moment in time that will not happen again their is no room for error you can't wait until the light gets better or the weather changes, you have to work with the worst lighting and weather and make it work, you also need to work in changing lighting and circumstance of guests or weather.

Occasionally, I'm asked to shoot an event or wedding, and I humbly decline. Indeed, I can't imagine the stress associated with event and wedding photography. People and landscapes are two completely separate subjects, for sure! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Take care, James!
