A mix of timelapses, photos and real-time videos of the bioluminescence, spotted at Eaglehawk Neck Tasmania on the 22nd of June 2017. This type of bioluminescence is caused by a type of organism called the Noctiluca Scintillans, and is said to emit light when they sense they are about to be eaten in order to grab attention from the predators of their predators.
These organisms clump together and appear as a pink/red floating gunk, also known as a "red tide", and does not occur predictably.
I follow a friendly group of people on Facebook called Bioluminescence Australia; this is how I came to know of these glowing creatures. To understand more, go to / 445171692325596 .

Congratulations on the TV show Damian! That's awesome. 👏👏👏 ☺ I thought bioluminescence only occurred up north. We may have to take the ferry down and have another drive tour. You get load of good stuff in Tassie! Your work here is beautiful and you always pick really good music that flows with your images.

Amazing footages, I've myself attempted to make video of bio-luminescence but it did not work out well. I've done two things. 1. I have changed the shutter angle to 360Degree to gain one exposure stop. Anyway I had to bump ISO so high that I ended up with extremely noisy footage I could not fix in post. I am using a sigma 18-35mm and a speedbooster creating a F1.2. But yeah, it remains a micro third optics, the bmpcc 4k. Would you be able to share your setup and your camera settings? I would be delighted to learn from the best :)

nikon d5500 with the 35mm f1.8 and the tokina 11-16 f2.8, tons of different settings for different compromises, thus high noise for real-time vid and lower noise for timelapse and photos which can expose for longer.. real-time vid was 5 digit iso.

Why are you killing them. I am from Japan, we have bioluminescent sites like this but we are taught since kindergarten to respect them and to not bother them. This is quite sad that you would treat nature like this.

When this was filmed 4 years ago, we never knew that stepping on them would kill them. We only knew that disturbing the water would cause them to glow, and that those that remained in the sand also glowed when disturbed. It's only recently that I've come across various articles (probably copied from the same sources) stating they would be killed by stepping. You may also notice that no other comments mention it besides yours.

@@DanielLame Well now you know. So maybe asking people not to do what you did wouldn't be a bad idea.
