The party of Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu won control of parliament in Sunday's election, reinforcing a pro-China tilt in the Indian Ocean island nation that was traditionally close to India. The deterioration of bilateral ties between Maldives and India has played out on social media against the backdrop of Israel's war in Gaza, which has turned Maldivian public opinion against India, explains FRANCE 24's Leela Jacinto.

Not Spain nor USA ,it should be given back to the rightful owner . These archipelago islands including Diego Garcia formerly ruled by the Uk but belongs to the Republic of Mauritius ,😮😢colonial rules ended it and got independence in 1968 from the Uk and forcibly the islanders living there were expelled against their will in 1960’s to make place for a military base for the USA,by the Uk,look into the ICJ resolutions you will have an idea of these islanders expulsions.

When the Maldivian president asked for help from India recently to reduce the debt owed it was not really to reduce the debt. He knew India would refuse due to recent happenings. He wanted his people to see for themselves that India will not help the Maldives anymore. Gained votes right there. This idea could not have been his own - he would have had 'outside' help in evil diplomacy.

Another issue is the sinking archipelago by 3 CM each year. If this continues Maldives as a nation won’t exist with the rising seawater levels. I’m not exaggerating but is a fact. In few years time Maldives won’t exist will sink in, sad to say but that is the fact. Like all other Chinese investments this too will vanish.

I think the Maldives wanted to become a neutral country. It wanted to stop being India's backyard and little brother. It is a democracy and its population has spoken. India should not consider its friendship with India and China is a zero sum game. India and China can both invest in the Maldives and contribute to its well being.

Please by all means! If tomorrow India stops exporting food and necessary items and stops providing medical aid, then, what the Maldivians do? China itself is importing food to feed its citizens. Even if China agrees to help, it will simply not be cost-effective, and the people have to pay the additional cost. So, India may not lose much, the Maldivians, on the other hand, may have to pay a price. Geography matters and China is far from the Maldives in comparison to India and that is a fact. Money can buy things in the short run, but it can't buy a sustainable relationship between two countries. Only time will tell.
