To keep snow and rain away from the air conditioner I decided to install an awning. In this video I build the frame and install the metal roof to construct an awning.

From Buffalo, N.Y. That's a real good idea for keeping the heat of the sun OFF the A/C unit. Thanks Pal.

This should work wonders with our trailer windows too thanks! Attach to the framework of the window through the siding. 👍👍

In the interest of making the entire unit lighter, I think I will do mine with one by four wood instead of 2 X 4. I think it should work as well. Thank you for the video.

Seth, I enjoy the videos and really like the design of the awning. Though...I asked google and got a few hits back that recommend a minimum 20 in. clearance above a window unit so that hot air coming out of the condensor coil doesn't get deflected back to the intake vents and reduce the units cooling efficiency. If you have the chance, move the awning up more than a foot and you will probably find the AC unit does a little better cooling your workshop.

Notice your cuts dont match the actual triangle! You made me cut mine wrong! Your first cuts are in opposite directions but the actual triangle if you look at each 2 by 4 the top is longer then the bottom piece on both top sides, did you correct a mistake on here and not mention it? Or im i looking at this wrong?

+Parlusk over the past two years I have probably made a few Thousand Cuts. So far it is holding up well but I can hear that I may have to replace the brushes before too long. It came with an extra pair. I am certainly not a power user but for the general handyman I think it is great.
@jeaniechampagne8831
@jeaniechampagne8831 Жыл бұрын
Looks simple enough for an experienced handyman which I'm not but I will follow step by step. My problem is gonna be that my ac is in a window so I'm assuming the awning needs to be at top of window.... which I'm not too sure the ac will be covered enough from the sun heat. I'm gonna try anyway.

Question. Are you drilling the board to the house on the studs or does it really matter if you do not drill into a stud? I am looking at building these for the exterior doors.

Maybe less snow or rain ...helps the ac last? But, maybe an awning doesn't let it ever get rinsed off...maybe a dirt buildup is bad for the ac unit ? Any other opinions?

That is not a thru the wall AC, wall is blocking exhaust air flow from exhaust grill , which will negate benefit of awning, nice awning though !!!

It rained for 5 hours today and I checked the results. The unit is dry as can be as is the wall. I think its a success so far. I will go back and add some trim later and probably more caulk. Flashing would probably be a good idea.

I'm confused. I just watched an expert interviewed who claims that an awning is a horrible idea for the external unit due to air circulation issues. Now you're building an awning for yours. Am I missing something?
@LandtoHouse
@LandtoHouse 4 жыл бұрын
When in doubt go with the expert.
@da324

Define expert! The awning this guy made will not impede the circulation whatsoever. Someone told me something when I was very young that I've never forgotten. "No one knows what you think they know."

At one time I considered running 4" pvc pipe from ceiling and a hose to each tool but I have picked up small wet vacs at dump for free ( had to replace a caster ) 1 for $5 at a thrift store, I think I'll be able to have a vac. dedicated to each tool ! ( when I get to it )

+gary nicholson if it weren't for the gift from my brother-in-law I would be doing the same thing. Seems like a very practical and inexpensive method. I hear talk about static in PVC lines. I'm only going to be doing two" pipe. That wall system was designed with that size. Hopefully it will do fine.

Why need to put roofing on the aircon, isnt it waterproof?
@strmchasr1814
@strmchasr1814 3 жыл бұрын
you do that if its not in the shade during the heat of the day, it increases the ac units effeciency and usually helps it last longer, but if you say have a big shade tree providing shade, then the awning isnt really 'needed' you can also instead of using 'metal' you can use cloth to cover it for those worried about the hot air flow but you will end up having to replace the cloth alot sooner then the metal he used

A slap of paint wouldn't go amiss. You o erdosed on the choice of wood dimensions. All in all its ugly. The sharp corners edges of the metal are a recipe for disaster.
