Imagine a post-apocalyptic movie in which our technological civilization has been wiped out a decade or two ago, but the older survivors still have a memory of how things used to be. Think Station Eleven (a gem of a series for lovers of poetic post-apocalyptic television by the way). One of the protagonists is in love with the memory of this song. However there are no functioning devices left to play it anymore. So one day, he arranges for an amateur orchestra to play it. The initial melody is played by a group of violins maybe? the baseline melody (I'm sure I lack the correct terminology) by a basso or cello. The beat, from beating aluminum drums. The singing, from a chorus of children or young people who never saw civilization as it used to be, but are relatively happy with life as they found it, even though it is tough. The piece is performed somewhere outside, in the light of torches and lanterns, the greatest wish of our protagonist, whose life is slipping away to old age and illness. A magical moment that will nurture this small community of survivors for years to come.
