In this video I take a look at a recent bass VSTi that I got as part of ‪@NativeInstruments‬ Komplete 14 called Session Bassist Prime Bass, and try to see if it closes the gap between a real bass guitar and some other highly acclaimed bass virtual instruments.
👍 Thanks for watching! Please like, comment, & subscribe.

So what do you think about the various Bass VSTis when compared to a real bass guitar?
@830jkl

I think they come close enough to make a song sound good, does it have to sound exactly like a real bass?, no. I just enjoy them and use them for what they are. 🎹

I've been using this for a few months and it's great! I've been playing bass for almost 50 years. I generally use Vsti's to write parts and then learn them on bass and record them. I think the Steinberg Electric Bass has better articulations but Prime has a great sound. Scarbee Rick bass is pretty good too. It's great to have all these options in my toolbox. Different projects call for different tools.

I too liked the NI Prime... I already own Kontakt7, it has some basses (I really like the stand up acoustic bass) I'd be curious to hear a side by side of the Kontakt library basses and Prime. I feel with patience and careful processing, you could get the Prime sound with the Kontakt7 Library basses... wish Prime had a trial period...

Well the big difference of course is the patterns that are part of the NI Prime Bass. But you might not care for those so much if you want to program your own bass lines anyway.

@@LanewoodStudios So would you say there would be more processing going on under the hood with a VSTi such as Prime vs one included in a package such as Kontakt library? What I'm getting at is I really liked the natural fret sounds and whatnot that I heard from the Prime, and I would hope to be able to recreate that with the instruments I already possess...
@LanewoodStudios

@@blewsyboy well I think it’s hard to recreate that part of the sound with the factory default sounds, but I haven’t checked them yet. Do you have control over the fret sounds in there somehow? It’s probably also different bass guitars that are samples/emulated.

Modo Bass is pretty awesome. One of those cases where a modeled instrument doesn't sound artificial. The articulations are tremendous sand the extra sounds are really good.... I've watched a very good bassist being fooled, trying to pick the part he actually played out of a blind A/B test after the mixing engineer carefully programmed his part with Modo bass. That was also some really good, time consuming programming, but it's a really good V.I. have you tried it yet? The latest version. Had good fretless modeling as well.
@LanewoodStudios
@LanewoodStudios Жыл бұрын
It’s been mentioned a couple of times so must check it out, which I haven’t done so far no. It does sound like it might not be that quick time saver if a lot of programming is involved. Or does it have moldable patterns as well?
@ramspencer5492
@ramspencer5492 Жыл бұрын
@@LanewoodStudios the extensive programing was to fool the bassist who wrote the part and played it in the song that was listening for the V.I. vs his part.....and was fooled. It sounds good with minimal configuration and some processing. It's not overly hard to set up. Time saver? I don't notice it being slow.... I don't really think of using a V.I. vs bass as a time saver. Can be easier and more intuitive...... therefore quicker to compose using midi and a keyboard vs a bass guitar. A lot of people don't pay bass or have a bass.
@LanewoodStudios

I prefer the real bass. It's simply faster and groovier. I found, after all these years, those added bells and whistles (meant to fool even a seasoned bassist,) make the effort to record a realistic bass part greater and it always ends up taking a lot longer to make it sound real than it takes to keep recording takes and comping a real bassist. Do I like any of the VSTis your auditioned? Nope. They each had their own range of "doinky".

@@LanewoodStudios, I do have my favourite VSTis for bass but all the Fender ones never sound as good as a real Fender. It's the way the real thing was built. And the price of, say, a used Squier is well within the reach of 90% of VSTi owners. The DIs and channels to capture them is where the real money goes but the resale for those is always good. I'm a bassist BTW. Cheers!📢

@@LanewoodStudios yeah. There's are patterns. But I don't think comprehensive enough to be best in class. You can mix and match though. Grab patterns from any vst.... Start with something like Scaler. Or play a lick on a guitar, capture midi and drop it an Octive. I don't think EzBass even has that bandmate mode that EZ Keys and Ez drums have. I'm not really a fan of using midi loops for melody.. At least not without heavily modifying them.

They all sound very usable and slightly different. I do find that the real bass has more clarity in the low end, it's a little more defined. The NI bass sounds like midi wavetable from the 90s but then I am biased against NI as I think their Guitar Rig tones are some of the worst in the industry.

@@LanewoodStudios I use virtual bass in early songwriting just because it's easier to rearrange but honestly it sounds great in most cases. Thanks for listening. Yes the wedgeforce is the closest when it comes to sound of the actual notes. It just sounds very artificial to me because of the lack of fret noise and such.
