We defend against the first wave of German attackers in Lanzerath Ridge, the new solo (solitaire) wargame (historical conflict simulation) from DVG (Dan Verssen Games) and designed by David Thompson and Nils Johansson. In this episode, we fight the first wave of the assault.

Yay “Super P” did well at the end taking out that machine gunner. Think its best to try to get them killed early if you can.

It was a fantastic shot, yes. :) Yeah, I'm a bit concerned that we have 3 German machine guns still active after the first wave. Not ideal, I fear. We got very lucky on which foxholes they targeted.

Your production values are so impressive. How you manage all this output and hold down a job and have a family life is a mystery to me! Enjoyed many of your previous videos keep up the good work. Can be quite difficukt to find some of these great games over here in the uk.

After you've experienced an attack deck, it's a good bit easier. I've not played or seen the 3rd and 4th decks yet, which makes me wonder if I should peek at them before we get there or just take them fully unknown. There is another level to the game where you add tactics cards, and I think those make the attacks unpredictable again.

I'm really enjoying this game. One thing I love being a guy who is easily distracted is that you can walk away from the game at any moment and when you return you know exactly where you left off just based on the action tokens. I also learned if you have a series of bad rolls, you can lose in a hurry. I kept rolling "one's" in one game and the stack on the 1 line pushed into my position quite quickly. Esp. since I was also rolling low numbers when I was shooting at them. So I lost. I started a new game and things are going much better. It's a lot of fun.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the game! That does seem to be a thing, if you get too many guys pushing up the line in one turn it can be hard to survive, for sure. I think keeping two zones clear helps a lot with that, but that's easier said than done. :)

@@ZillaBlitz In hindsight, now that I've played a couple more games, I think I may have put one or more leaders designated for the 1-diamond track into the 1-square track leading to a quick loss. Not sure, but I am enjoying the game a lot.

I had thought about doing Storm above the Reich about a year ago, but then thought that I wouldn't be able to film it well. Now I think I'd have a better idea, but there are a bunch of games I want to do first. I would like to to Skies above Britain as well. That would be fun. Too many games, too little time. :)

Pretty excited to be a Machine gunner (It was what I was going for). So far I like the game system. It seems pretty simple and yet it will not be the same game over and over. I would recommend saving the Browning automatic Rifles ammo for later as I am sure things get more dicey as time goes on. But that Ma Duce looks like it has way more ammo than you will go through so I would us the heck out it. The sound of a Ma Duce backing you up is inspiring for us and terrifying for the poor suckers its pointed at! Between that and Radio calling for Artillery (which I recommend you continue since I think it will be more effective than one guy with rifle turn for turn), I think we are good shape.

We get to shift people about in subsequent waves, so I want to think through how we'll position everyone, but with machine gun skill, it's likely you'll end up on a machine gun. I'm not totally sure on the artillery because in Round 2 the jeep is likely to get damaged by mortars, which makes it harder to call in for artillery. And Zero is inspirational, so having him with other squad members makes it more likely they can hit things. So ... something to think about. Lots of different ways to go with this. :)

At my gym here in the midwest about 17 years ago I knew a skinny but tough little old guy, and one day in the locker room somebody asked him where he got this huge scar on his bicep. He apparently was the only rifleman in his platoon to hold his position/not run away as he kept firing when overrun at the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded, captured and treated for his wound by the Germans and luckily didn't have long to wait in a POW camp before the war was over. I think of him when I see those faces on the counters on the board.

Thanks for sharing, that's a cool story. :) They do mention in the historical artifacts, about US troops that pulled back around them. I suppose he would have been very close to the location of the game in either case.

Interesting game mechanics so far. Speaking of the Ardennes Offensive.. I just won a bid on Hitler's Last Gamble from 1989 new and unpunched. I am looking forward to playing that one after I get Victory in the West on the table. I am finding that the older games are quite appealing and still very viable games even in 2022 with all our fancy games and such. Nice to rescue some new old stock games for the gaming table.

@@ZillaBlitz The fact that it is battalion level Ardennes offensive really appealed to me. I would like to eventually get the MMP Last Blitzkrieg but that price tag is hefty when compared to $25 shipping and taxes included on HLG. I like the BCS from MMP so I will eventually get all the games in it but not for a bit. The classics need lovin too!

Second time through a deck makes a huge difference, yes. There are optional tactics cards to add after this, which I think brings back an unpredictable nature to the German attacks.

Nice game! First timer here. Can you spend all five actions on one person? For example, 1)goto machine gun, 2)dismount it, 3)bring it to new position and 4)finally remount it?

Generally speaking, no, a soldier becomes expended once they take an action. :)

Thanks! The markers are replacing the historical names of the soldiers with the names of viewers on the channel who have volunteered to be in the story. :)

28:39 I think should be explained as 4 and 2 no cumulative 6. So No. 4 on D6 killed the spearhead unit as it was 3 defence.

That's an interesting point, is there a rule that guides that? I had it in my head that it's only one shot and you add them up.

I am just logical way interpreting the rule e.g. 4.1.4 (Adjust Fire) what is used for multiroll of dices. There is listed that if at least one of dices rolled is equal to or exceeds the attacker counters' defence value, the attacker is removed from the board and placed back in the supply. Also I think it should be played the same way when you are using inspiration of the leader for another soldier, e.g. which has combat value d8, so you are using two d8 dices but each one is evaluated separately and not as cumulative number. But at the end I have found even better example especially at 16th Page of Rules-Game play example when you can read "Slape attacks the rifleman (1). Slape has a 2d6 combat value (same as Bouck-my add), so you roll two six-sided dice. The result is 2 and 3. The 3 is equal to the defence value for the space the rifleman is in, so the rifleman is removed from the board and placed back into the supply. If it would be played as you did the result would be 2+3=5 what is not matched the rules from my point of view. What do you think Zilla? @@ZillaBlitz

I'm not sure, because in this exchange on BGG David Thompson mentions that the 3 is a typo in the rulebook. The defense should be 5 for that soldier. So while I see your point, I'm left confused as to what the rule should be. boardgamegeek.com/thread/2920666/article/41124320#41124320

I just wanted to explain that Bouck has roll with 2 pieces of D6 (as it is printed on his chip down left). The result of every rolled dice is evaluated separately and no as cumulative result so the result was 4 (1st dice) and 2 (2nd dice) and no 6 as 4+2=6. Just this wanted to explain.

Only one possible error I saw. (No need to reply as it's so old and had no effect, just commenting for the algorithm and to have it out there before I move on to the rest of the series to see if I was right.) You had the MG fire and then fire a second time ACROSS the zone which says +1. You then told us that since it was the 2nd MG shot, instead of the 4 in the square, you needed to use the 6 in the pentagon, and rolled based on that. SURELY you'd have to add the +1 for the zone to that--meaning you needed a 7? But you DID roll a 7 so it was all good! ;-)

Actually, I like to add error messages so I tend to check these. That was actually correct, although my pointing at the 6 in the octagon was misleading. The shot still uses the 4 in the square for its base calculation, then +1 for crossing the range, then +1 for the second shot. So the 6 is correct as a total. Tapping the 6 in the octagon wasn't helpful. :)

Great game the first time you play. Less so each subsequent play as you know pretty clearly what the Germans will do in each attack phase. At the the end, why wouldn't you stack everyone on the flanks?
