We defend against the third wave of German attackers in Lanzerath Ridge, the new solo (solitaire) wargame (historical conflict simulation) from DVG (Dan Verssen Games) and designed by David Thompson and Nils Johansson. In this episode, we fight the third wave of the assault.

Yes, that went pretty well for us, with the help of some incompetent German mortars and machine guns. I'm very curious to see what the final wave has in store for us. Onward, and I hope you enjoy the game! :)

About halfway through it was looking a little worrying. But then the Germans started to miss everything, and some marksman shooting turned the tide. On to the final push!

We really did get lucky with both the German targeting and shooting. That could have been a lot worse. I'm not sure it would have lost us the game, but certainly would have cost us some actions at the end to take out German machine guns. On to the Final Wave! :)

Thanks! I have no idea how I thought Wave 3 would hit the flanks too, I totally muffed that one. But yeah, Wave 4, flanks, we'll be ready! :)

Getting rid of all the machine guns will be huge going into the last round. Was awesome to see I was in position to get one of them. I think going in blind was fun. Looking forward to the final round

I think it will help a lot, especially if there is only 1 round of machine guns firing in the last round. Final round should be interesting! :)

Another great turn, Zilla! We were helped by the ineffectiveness of the German mortars and their lousy MG shooting. But targeting those MGs for destruction at the end was inspired, and the dice rolling was very lucky. Only one more wave of attackers, but I’m really afraid the dice will turn against us. Fingers crossed.

I do think on the whole our luck has been positive. We had that one remarkable stretch of bad luck on the machine gun, and haven't been able to get any artillery support since the first wave, but on the whole I think we've hit things at an above average rate and most definitely, the German machine guns and mortars should have wounded more of us. I'm not sure it would have caused us to lose yet, but we probably wouldn't have had the actions to take out the machine guns at the end of the 2nd and 3rd waves.

Your shooting in the middle was critical there, nice work! A possible good thing is that I think the starting set up I used this time might actually be a good set up for the next wave.

I love this series. I had just been watching the Operations Room documentary on the Battle of the Bulge and it mentioned Lanzerath Ridge and how they held out. I'd be very tempted to pick this one up!

I do feel like on the whole we were pretty lucky, too, which helped. Those German mortars and machine guns could have done so much more damage. It seemed like every time they had a chance to target a crowded position, they shot at something else. Except for the end, when they missed everything in the crowded position. We'll take it, though, on to Wave 4!

I think I have snagged a copy of this. 🤞Your engaging videos cost me again 💸😎Looking forward to the finale. One question regarding MG-42 - it seems sometimes you claim two kills: is there a '2' on the reverse of the counter? Makes me wonder if it takes two hits to take 'em out 🤔

Glad you're enjoying it, Peter! The number of kills is just a flavor thing I'm tracking. I figure the machine gun crews are at least 2 people, so I'm assuming we're taking out the loader as well.

15:05 Parkera can inspire just Harth as he is from A platoon and Parkera is commander of A platoon. Barney is from C platoon so he can be inspired on platoon level just with Springer.

I haven't played for a while, but I thought that inspiration isn't bound by squad, and I thought I recall the designer posting that in a comment here somewhere. I'd have to go back and check, and it's possible I might be wrong. I know the other functions are bound by squad, but I think I have it right here.

Look at the rules at 21st of Page of Rules paragraph 4.3.2 Inspire. E.g. Bouck and Slape can Inspire all defenders except those that also have Inspire attribute. Dustman (BTW leader of A squad) can Inspire defenders from A Squad, etc.@@ZillaBlitz

One of the game's research books that's available on Audible (free if you have an active account) is called "The Longest Winter The Battle of the Bulge and the Epic Story of World War II's Most Decorated Platoon" by Alex Kershaw. I'm going to start listening to it tomorrow.

After realizing that you can predict the what will happen during each wave, I wonder if it would be a good idea to have about 9 extra cards per wave, then remove 9, so it's harder to predict. That way there may be 3 machine gun attacks, or maybe only 1.

Yes, that's a good idea. They do that with the optional Verteran and Elite decks, there are always a few cards not included, so you don't know what's coming. I do think you could do something similar with the basic decks, yes. I suspect that wasn't done because there is a certain concentration of force that happens with each deck (attack the flanks on the last wave, for example). It might make the German attack weaker if some of the key cards didn't mass. It would reduce the smoothness of the play a good bit, but I was thinking a table-system for determining German actions would be a good way to get at the same thing. And different tables for determining different flavors of German attack waves. Or wave cards where you release the information in a partially hidden format. In the end, though, I do think the Veteran level cards get at this sort of variability in attacks, and add a reasonable level of unpredictability to deal with as the human. I feel like that level is the sweet spot for me.

Wow those Germans really need to go back to the range and practise their shooting and Mortar skills, while the US keep on target with good KIAs and I was able to swap my pom poms for the rifle this time ha ha

Yeah, we had some moments of bad luck, but the German machine guns and mortars really struggled this wave. A couple of different rolls and this could have been very different. Although, I think we probably would have survived, but we would have had to spend our energy patching ourselves up instead of taking out those machine guns. Very curious to see how the last wave goes. I hope to play Monday and post on Tuesday. Thanks for stopping in, Parkera!
