It’s cherry blossom season in Washington D.C., and I found out that there’s a great place right next to my house to check out the cherry blossoms. It just so turns out that it’s incredibly popular among Chinese people in the U.S., so I decided to go out, help people take some pictures, ask for a little help myself, and see how people react when spoken to in their native language! This is part of the reason I love learning languages so much!

I suspected that long ago. We process the language learned in adult life, and the language learned in childhood in different parts of the brain
@KhronicD
@KhronicD 3 жыл бұрын
@@peterpen7551 it's also been scientifically proven that it gets harder to learn language as you get older. Your brain develops neural pathways early on that ingrain that knowledge physically into your grey matter. It's not impossible, as has been proven with videos like these, so never be afraid to try new things. It may even be beneficial to your brains health.

I've always been so proud of myself for having taught myself fluent enough Spanish to pass. I realize that's nothing like learning Mandarin. But I'd totally classify myself as a language enthusiast. I think it is one of the most beautiful subjects in the world. You guys that I see speaking these really difficult languages are an inspiration to me. I feel like we're on the same mission. The only absolute required equipment is having someone to help you and a strong enough desire to conquer whatever obstacles.

Years ago, I worked in hospital in southern FL & this doctor came in around 3:30 in the morning to do rounds. When not conversing with people or nursing staff or his patients, he would chatter away in Mandarin. His reasoning was, he learned it for a long awaited trip to China. Although he wasn't sure he'd return, he didn't want to forget his skill. He practiced the theory, if you don't use it, you lose it! Not sure if he's alive yet, but if so, I can imagine him chattering away to nursing home staff 24/7!!😎

this isn't making a lot of sense because you could be raised in the US and speak mandarin fluently. Or moved to the states at an early age like me.
@alanhuang3005
@alanhuang3005 3 жыл бұрын
Right, I also moved to the states at an early age. While it is possible to be fluent in both languages, it’s incredibly hard for native Chinese speakers to speak completely accentless English(if you listen to most of the Chinese speakers that Chris meets on this channel, they all have at least a little bit of an accent) and obviously vice versa as well.
@Alex-bb1xn
@Alex-bb1xn 3 жыл бұрын
@@alanhuang3005 that still makes no sense; mate. There are plenty of people who speak fluent Chinese and English and sound totally native in both.

@@Alex-bb1xn Alright mate, fair enough. I’m just trying to give her a compliment, as I believe achieving accentless speech in both languages is quite a feat. If you think enough people have achieved it so it doesn’t deserve a mention, I cannot argue with you. Cheers.
@Alex-bb1xn

@@alanhuang3005 it’s commendable, but it’s not that much of a feat for anyone who grew up speaking both languages.
