You are worried about a binary tear I sent a silver age Spidey in recently with a rip all the way through the middle of the book about 1 inch back. Cover front cover in all middle pages were torn. I’m just waiting to see how CGC hits me with that. I’m just praying they don’t give me, a purple label

I just saw the grades on my latest batch of 25 on CGC before they send em to me. I got Harsh Harry this time, though I have to admit there were many books that were questionable. I'm pretty chill with the graders as I'll get higher grades when I don't expect it many times. I just roll with the law of averages. I did send in a book with a large bindery tear on purpose, a New Mutants 100 1st print direct, to see what grade I would get. I got a 9.4 when the rest of the book was great. Lesson learned, I guess? I did buy a load of 40 nice Lobo 1 with that cool Bisley cover. About half has production receded staples. They are getting 9.6 so they aren't worth sending in. I recently had a bindery tear on a newsstand Punisher 1 limited 1986, a minor one, and it hit 9.8. I don't think I've ever come across one of those without a bindery tear. It's a thicker book so that might be why.

Some graders just hate any type of tear, some understand it doesn't really effect the appeal of the book.. I mean how does the bottom or top of the spine hurt the presentation??? You might try resubmitting that book just as an experiment. If you do, let me know what the 2nd grader does.

I had an Avengers Annual 10 with a tiny bindery tear on the top and bottom, and it still came back a 9.8. I think CGC views it more of a manufacturing defect instead of a handling one. I also have a quick question. I have a Captain 3-D comic from 1953 that I was thinking of pressing. The thing I'm concerned about is that it still has the 3-D glasses attached inside of it. Will pressing it possibly ruin the glasses or embed them in the pages? It looks like at least a 9.0 as is, but I'd like to make it look as good as possible before submission. Appreciate any advice.

Generally speaking, when does the Newsstand era vs. Direct Sales era begin/end?
@ImproveCollectingComics
@ImproveCollectingComics Ай бұрын
1985 they are about even, 1986 there start being more directs. However, from 1978 to 1985, newsstands in the ultra high grades tend to still be a bit rarer, since directs were more often sold to collectors and newsstands to people outside of comic shops.

I think the direct came in around the middle of 1979.

I really enjoy your channel...awesome content! One question: Is it just an individual grader that is responsible for determining the grade? When I read the grading steps on CGCs site they mention that grading is "a team effort, with multiple CGC professionals examining each collectible"...and that a "consensus is reached on final grade". Based on this I thought multiple graders review each book?

Great video. Just curious, I have a copy of the first appearance of Carnage that I got when it was published and I was thinking of sending in for grading. But, it has a bent staple that was like that from the printing of it. How do you think that would affect the grade on an otherwise near perfect book?
@johnnydropkicks
@johnnydropkicks Ай бұрын
You are talking about ASM #361, correct? If so, that book is a little bit tricky when getting graded because a good portion, if not most of the print run had a manufacturing defect about 1/4” above (and runs along) the bottom edge on the back cover. They are small punch marks from the press. They are a little bit difficult to see, but if they are there, you should definitely be able to feel them. I’ve seen CGC penalize copies of this issue for that defect - and I’ve seen them ignore it because it is a known manufacturing defect. So, when it comes to that staple; and this is just my guess, I would think they would penalize you for it because I don’t believe that is a widely known manufacturing defect. Again, this is just my guess based on the limited knowledge that I have. I wish you the best. 🎤🔽

The staple shouldn't affect the grade. And that book has a lot of common bindery issues, I've seen some pretty crazy 9.8s on that book... lots of leniency.

how can you tell if it's a bindery tear that may NOT affect grade, and a bindery tear that would affect grade?
@ImproveCollectingComics
@ImproveCollectingComics Ай бұрын
If it's on the top and bottom of the spine, it's pretty common. Somewhere else on the book you generally need to look at a bunch of different books to see if it's common. Examples would be the back of ASM #129 near the top front staple, and ASM #328/ASM #361 on the lower back cover.

Hey Dave (EDIT: Jim), were there graders’ notes for the 9.4 UXM #266?
@ImproveCollectingComics
@ImproveCollectingComics Ай бұрын
It's Jim, and there actually are.. the only book in the submission that had notes. Grader Notes wear right bottom of back cover (uh no) light staple tears (don't remember seeing this.. maybe bindery) The note makes me think it was a nitpicky grader. I've seen quite a few of these books that have more defects get the 9.8.

@@ImproveCollectingComics Thanks for the info, Jim. I’m not super awesome with remembering names, but for some reason that I can not figure out, I’ve confused the names “Jim” and “Dave” my entire life. I’ve noticed that I’ve incorrectly addressed more Jim’s as "Dave" than the other way around, but it’s happened a lot the other way too. I’ve had a tough life. 🙂
