Small correction: the board may seem superficially like the Skipr, but it differs significantly in components and construction. The SOC and related components are basically the same as the BTT CB1, to the point where Sovol is actually using the CB1 OS image. The MCU side is incredibly similar to the FYSTEC Cheetah V1.1. It looks like they either share a reference implementation, or one heavily inspired the other. There are more than a few ways Sovol didn't, uh... cite their sources for the design. All that being said, I'm happy I got one, warts notwithstanding. As always, great video, and I'm glad you covered this printer!

One interesting point that could be made here is on just HOW MUCH open source it is, and how that effects potential mods. A super interesting project is the one from TeachingTech, where he started converting it into a tool-changer, essentially a budget Prusa XL. Sure, he just started, but it's TeachingTech, so I'm pretty sure he'll make it happen. So yeah, definitely a plus. SV08 on it's own seems like a decent printer, but not something I would buy. However, if tool-changer mod seems doable, and if the community makes interesting mods for it, it will definitely make me want to buy it.

That exact video is why I put in my order. I'm hoping to upgrade from my Prusa Mini, but the Mk4 isn't that big of an upgrade, and I can't afford XL money. Plus, with Sovol's shipping delays, I'll have part 2 ready to watch by the time it shows up!

Based on a detailed analysis of the board (video coming soon), I strongly suspect Sovol is developing an MMU add-on for the SV08. Also... it's not quite as open-source as it first appears. (see issue #8 on the SV08 GitHub)

Not even close to open source, really. Schematics aren't complete, and PDF and STEP files are output formats, not sources. More like dimensions napkin schetches than anything resembling an open source project.
@zapl80
@zapl80 Күн бұрын
@@octothorpian_nightmare they published all you need to recreate it, open source does not require you to make it easy to recreate it. STEP isn't just output it's an exchange format between cad tools. Specification documents like those PDFs are exactly what a supplier would need to create those parts and their PCBs aren't open source as far as I can tell so they don't include board level schematics. It's enough to create a board with the same pinout and dimensions and that's all that is needed for some other company to make an SV08 clone. The source for this project, the V2.4 does not include any better sources.

Actually instead of letting the printer cool down between prints to avoid z-shift, I prefer to preheat the bed (and chamber on printers with heated chamber, like Qidi´s X-Max 3) and than wait for 10 minutes or more before calibrating the z- offset. This gives realy great 1st layers, as the probe has already reached a contant temperature, so no further drift. Also a bed needs some time to fully heat (thermistor is on the underside of the bed, not on the surface). So it is a good idea to probe the bed only after everything is heated finaly and every stess due to heating the bed is released and the deformation of the bed is finalized. There are always two reasons the first layer isn´t perfect: Temperature drift of the probe itself and the bed still deforming while printing. You can reduce the first problem with other probes - like klicky, tab, load cell using the nozzle as probe. But the only way to reduce the second one still is preheating the bed and wait untill all deformation has settled. On my x-max 3 there is even a sticker telling you to wait untill the temperature is settled. However, no 3d-printer manufacter seem to implement this in their slicer profiles. The reason is quite simple: Many reviewers tell you how fast the printer comes to temperature and start printing and compare it with other printers. So instead to tune the slicer profile for optimal 1st layer in print profile (start g-code) by adding a "G4 P600000" (10 minutes, time is in miliseconds, on my x-max 3 I use 20 minutes) after the bed has reached temperatur on the underside, the profiles start abl right after the bed tells it reached temperature - much to early. Not every model does need it. A benchy f.e. will mostly look fine without wait, an also with PLA no big deal. However, bigger objects, esp. if the bottom layer is the later top of the object (panels etc.), or dificult materials (PA12, esp without CF) or simply testing how good the printer can do if optimal handled, you definitly should take your time untill everything is heated before doing ABL.

After watching this video, I watched another one by Maxamilst Workshop and he has pointed out that there is a big design flaw with the SV08. Nozzles are literally dropping out of the hotend during prints. Apparently, the nozzles are press fitted into the hotend and when printing PETG they become loose and just drop out. Have you heard of this happening? It looks like it hasn't happened to you yet or you would have said something. I'm on the fence with regards to buying an SV08, like you I feel that it has a lot of potential, but having nozzles just dropping out randomly isn't good. Update: Sovol is aware of the issue and hopes to have an updated hotend available and shipping with new units by the end of July.
@ModBotArmy
@ModBotArmy 4 күн бұрын
First time I am hearing about it. I believe they are using the same nozzles on their Comgrow t300 as well. They might be press fit, but theres alot of other hotends that use pressfittings as well. Wonder if he just caught a bad one or two. I anticipate there will be hotend upgrades coming for this thing but definitely not something I have experienced with this hotend.

The problem here is that they are using a physical probe and inductive, just disable the phyiscal and use the inductive probe (virtual) only in the FW for Z offset and be done with it, and make sure it probes before each print. At temp. You can also toss a eddy current probe on it or beacon, and even with the eddy it has thermal drift calibration for very little money.
@downsyndromebear
@downsyndromebear 4 күн бұрын
I believe as of now you can not use the Eddy probe due to the machine running a sovol forked version of klipper. I have seen posts that sovol is working on adding that into future releases though.
@RobHasIdeas
@RobHasIdeas 3 күн бұрын
@@downsyndromebear good news! Their fork doesn't actually have many huge changes from mainline Klipper. I have a... sneaking suspicion that a project to put vanilla Klipper on it will be available soon-ish.

I found the e3d revo heatsink adapter on pcbway and I'm curious to know your thoughts on it. Part of the reason that it's appealing is that the nozzle won't slip out because it would no longer be press fit into the hotend like the original is (which may be contributing to your inconsistent z offset). Could you look into this a little for us? And let us know what you think about it? Thanks.
@kilianlindlbauer8277
@kilianlindlbauer8277 4 күн бұрын
I dont think a revo is the right hotend for this printer. Standard revo simply doesn't cut it in terms of flow rates (150mm/s on a 0,4mm nozzle max) and revo high flow is stupidly expensive, one brass HF nozzle costs 10% of the printer and performs about the same as stock. And you want multiple different nozzle sizes, otherwise revo is pointless, so you will be spending quite some money on the hotend. For what version of revo is the adapter? Probably also fits other better suited hotends too or other hotend mods are available.

There's a certain market niche for printers that take some tinkering to make them function perfectly. I started with an SV07+ and still have it for large prints .. but .. most of what I make is smaller than that, and for that stuff I use a Adventurer 5M which didn't need any tweaking to make right. The way it homes the axes also calibrates them for dimension. No need to mess with those now stone-age bed leveling wheels or paper tests. And now I am just wishing that Flashforge will make a larger, hotter version of the 5M.

You know what, at first this thing was pretty rough, but its cleaned up a little and looks pretty attractive compared to competitors. I also feel that while some might see not having a big aluminium bed as a negative, with how long it takes those things to spread the heat across them, I actually think its a positive to have a plate that can change temperature more quickly. I think these big aluminium plates could probably stand to shrink in average thickness/thermal mass quite substantially because currently it feels like the hurt more than they help apart from bragging rights about a level of precision that doesnt matter compared to the textured PEI sheet on top of it and the rest of the assembly. I think their sensor z offset solution is janky, but that can be worked on, modded and the next version can be much better. Honestly, this thing doesnt seem half bad, and seems recommendable as someone's second printer. With it being open source as well, I honestly can't see much of a reason for many people to go the full bore voron route with the costs savings you could use to make this just as good.
