Large Iceberg Breaking near Ilulissat

Iceberg breaking up in the Ilulissat icefjord, close to an archaeological site called Sermermiut.
*A quick note - some of the external links to this video have mixed information. To be more precise, this is a large iceberg breaking up, which had already calved from the icecap. The large ones often collect at the end of the fjord, where it is a bit shallower. The NASA image at the end of the video shows this a bit more clearly*

Tsunamis were coming at the place where he was standing...but that said: NEVER go so close to the coast right there at the icefjord: sometimes the tsunamis actually kill tourists

If you have ever been on a frozen lake, when the ice cracks it bounces of the sides of the mountains and all around and it sounds very similar. Obviously this would make a lot more, but yes, very cool sounds.

Even though it was frustrating to watch the first time (I didn't realize the danger you were in), the clip as a whole was very satisfying. As it was, the running up the hill to get a safe vantage point made it even more visceral. The part that was most impressive to me, that the higher up shot couldn't convey, was the majestic rising of the base of the iceberg from sea. It seemed that I was watching a mountain burst from the depths, shedding the water that once held it down. A triumphant emergence from a battle of incalculable forces. I've watched it several times and it gets more impressive each time. Thank you for this.

if you've never experienced something like that it's difficult to judge how big that wave is going to be or how far it will travel. turning in and running up the hill was the prudent thing to do. many people have perished due to tsunamis caused by things like land slides
