Great review and summary, Pete. Your absolutely right about the price, but after buying higher end knives all over the place for the last 2-3 years, there is just something the small Sebenza has, that all others are lacking. What I've also realized lately, is that with many of my purchases I was unconsciously trying to find Sebenza-ish qualities in knives at a lower price point, so I would worry less about using them. What I've achieved by this, is ending up with a bunch of semi-expensive knives that together out-price a Sebenza many times, but still fails to outperform it on attributes that are important to me. I might just find it just as sensible to sell off most of them, and rather get my small Sebenza a big brother. Decadent or not, I also like the fact that there is some history attached to a knife, not at the cost of practicality, but if I can have it both ways - yeah.

Of the copious Sebenza 21 reviews I've seen, this is my favorite.

my comment was to long and hard to type, so in short I'm glad to see you posting and agreed the Sebenze is a great knife with great history while at the same time is a large amount for such a tool. I understand anyone who loves or doesn't understand why one needs such an expensive cutting tool. Theres so many sides into being a knife lover, or collector, or In my old case I was just addicted to buying every knife made to see what was the best TO ME. In the end I took a brake and sold most only keeping about 10 of them, sadly I sold many that were very amazing but I just found to expensive to comfortably use and abuse. Good luck to all on there folding knife journey for those into Sebenzas I also recommend Les Georges VECP it like a sebenza on steroids but even smoother and IMO way more comfortable, and for those not wanting to spend that much try a Kizer T1. I can say I sold most of my high end blades but kept two kizer T1 and have never like a knife more for cutting and there fun as hell to open and having owned three can take a serious beating. The End.

Best review hands down of the Sebenza. Real thoughts and honest opinions. I’m fixing to find out if the price tag is too far for me tomorrow. Honestly can’t believe I’ve gotten to this point, a bit of a ridiculous feeling buying a knife this much, but tired of “Instagram” knives that are all form and no function, here today, gone tomorrow with no long term support from the manufacturers.

The secret to buying midtechs is to buy them on the secondary market. I’ve bought many CRKs for extreme discounts if you’re patient. I see Large 21’s selling for $300 or so in lightly used condition. For example, I got a 3.5” XM-18 for $230 last week. Nearly 50% off and it’s like new. The traditional big 3 “Hinderer, Strider, CRK” are still my favorite knives despite owning and using all the newer stuff on the market. :) At the end of the day, the Lg 21 will always be the best EDC cutting tool on the market in my view. Value doesn’t mean end price. The customer service/warranty, spa services, resale value, are all factors to consider here. For example, if that SpydieChef develops lock rock a few years from now, what is spyderco going to do for you? Nothing.

bought my sebenza in 1989 and umnum in 2009. as i recall they were $250 and $325 each. boy am i glad i kept them.

I have a Millennium Large Sebenza and have enjoyed the ownership and using it for all those years. No reason it won't do a heap of years more. (The Large is the better knife over the small if you were to only have one Sebenza.) Great review, just about sums it up. I have work tools, knives, watches, all sorts that get a battering. And I have some prestige items/tool just because they are so nice to own and use. The Sebenzas, because of their price, do fit the latter, even though very able. Very capable and understated are why I love mine. A Classic for good reason. There maybe a better knife out there but it won't be a Sebenza. The Omega Watch of folding knives.

Thx for your honesty and the large 21 has always been why I only own two folders Rat2 aus8 Pm2 s30v I don’t want to make that jump into that coast,yet. I still dream of owning one The atom has everything I want and getting the head nod from you that’s where I’m going. Not that I need another folder but the atom has what I’m looking for pocket rotation. Now it’s waiting to catch a drop. So I’ll still spring for the 21 when I’m ready and I know I’ll find one. The sabenza is made to use and not being a guy who has intentions of keeping a case full of folders it makes sense to me own and use.

Seen a couple vids about this knife and yours explains it better than anybody. One day I’ll get one but honestly it won’t happen anytime soon. I want a Hinderer but after you show that blade I might get a CRK first.

Knives are for cutting. I think it's hilarious to see the end of your video, comparing the Buck 110 to a Sebenza. And the Buck slices about equally well. My 110 LT was under $20 US. I bought a new old stock 110 like yours for $20. And my most expensive one was $32. Uncle Randy might be proud of you. I'll likely never have a Sebenza. Nice to see you playing with one though.

Too decadent for me is a great explanation. Chris Reeves is a legend - I remember him still working out of South Africa. Don't think people realise the tech that he developed which have lead directly to like 80% of most modern pocket knives.

I never understood why hollow grinds kinda went out of vogue. Love my Sebenzas.

At the sydney knife show a few years ago I picked up the sebenza (after asking if I could) and it did... nothing for me. I can't really say why, I was expecting a bit of a "oh wow" moment and all I got was meh. The price is a big barrier, and I'm not a frame lock guy and recently I've been leaning a lot more to flippers. So, the We Knife 818 in M390 is my current EDC and I'm really digging it. You gotta go with your heart on these things. Mind you I have not taken it apart yet, so there is that.

I just bought a Spyderco GB2 and thought about you. Isn't very near a perfect Pete-knife? Hollowground, M4 steel, neutral handle, same blade length as a large sebenza?

Spyderco Gayle Bradley 2 is the poor mans Sebenza. Size is almost identical. Blade grind almost identical. Ergos are very similar. Thick liners instead of frame lock. It is a very confidence inspiration knife.

I think I like the Buck 110 best... you can’t beat a bit of wood and brass over titanium slabs!

I've been playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and it made me want to get a bowie knife so I picked up a Buck 119 because they're pretty cheap. I didn't really plan on using it much but the fantastic hollow ground blade is such an outstanding cutter that I'm modding the terrible handle so I can actually use it.

Thanks for the review. For me, overrated and too damn expensive. I'm quite happy with my ultimate EDC, a Cold Steel Recon I clip point with CTS XHP (sadly no longer available). I hate thumb studs and much prefer flippers. However, you can "train" a Recon I (maybe some other knives, too) to flip open with a hard wrist flick. Leave it partially open for three days and blast it with WD-40. Oh yes: my Recon I is partially serrated so I can easily cut small branches, vines, big boxes. Had a primo ZT which was great unless you wanted to cut a small branch. Recon I; don't leave home without it. :-)

I think you're wrong about your cardboard statement at 10:00. The force in between the box and the blade is friction, and the amount of area touching does not affect the amount of friction it has. The only thing that causes friction is the force of the box squeezing the knife, and the coefficient of friction between the two materials. Maybe the hollow grind does slice through better, but it has nothing to do with the amount of material touching the knife.

Just find one in good shape on the used market for a good price it's a win win you get it for cheaper and it's broken in so it's not so stiff

Why on earth use Torx drivers on Allen screws? All that engineering goes into a Sebenza, and then that :-(. They even supply the correct wrench as a courtesy. Your centering was off because you installed the washers differently from the way they wore in. In other words, you flipped at least one of them.

Did you say it has torquex screws. CRK uses Allen wrenches.

I appreciate the review but I still don't see why its so expensive. Does it being thinner behind the edge and having a slightly smoother action make a 200 dollar knife worth 450 dollars as opposed to getting something with much better materials that actually stands out

I can definitely understand the issue with the price. I’ve been able to justify the price because the sebenza has taken the place of many other knives for me. It is very capable and versatile while being very reliable and durable. Where many of my other knives such as microtechs, benchmades etc have developed blade play, lock rock and things of that nature my 6 year old sebenza hasn’t had a single problem.

I found a brand new one with black micarta on eBay for 400$. Great knife. Blade replacements are possible. Great heat treatment. Great people. Umnumzaan is better though 👍
