@@mattmarquez3938 You're not making a mistake. Just think of a path to take down the road. Welding for 35 years will do a number your body. Weld for 15 - 20 years, then go into inspection, or become an instructor. That being said, everyones body is different.

@@NuttedInYoMom seriously dude fuck that, sounds like a terrible life. Go build/weld a gate for $200 and sell it for $1800 on Facebook. Do two a week and you’re set while only working 20 hours. People are brainwashed into working hard. But I’ll admit it is nice to know you’re guaranteed $1500 a week instead of making $5000 one week and not making anything the next two. Then making $4k..... actually yeah fuck a real job lol

Being a welder can be a very rewarding job. I have been in the welding business for many years. There is a satisfaction and that comes with building something from a set of plains and the ideas of man. The entire process, many times, is quiet intriguing and inspiring when one considers its birth as an idea, the research, engineering and design that goes into the production of drawings used to convey technical data that ultimately produces a product, or in this case, a massive sea going vessel. The process, and numerous trade skills that go into the process, is for some - myself included, very rewarding. It's hard work. The atmosphere can be challenging (people and places), but it can be a very respectable and rewarding career choice. "Rod burning" is simply the beginning of what can become a very technical, academic and intellectual job that can indeed be quiet lucrative. One must remember, no matter what your vocation in life, a fool and his money soon part.

Despite all the health risks, wearing proper PPE greatly combats health risks and knee pads save you as well. If you can make it in a Shipyard, you can make it anywhere! Would recommend this career to anyone who is willing to work hard and doesn’t mind getting dirty, not to mention working up to 80+ hours a week! Minimum over here is 50. Good Luck!

Apply everywhere! And if possible try to get a cert, as most companies will prefer you. Of course experience itself is recommended. and if you have any family or friends in the trade, ask around. Sometimes you don't even need a cert to start working, AND!!! and, sometimes if you're recommended by a current employee you'll be one of the most preferred, as there's a ton of camaraderie and prejudice in the field. Tyrannical bosses, deadline pressures, under equipped shop. Drug addicts, drunks, tweekers as co-workers. Bullying, scheming, manipulative, back stabbing, stealing co-workers. Low pay, hot sweaty warehouse, filthy bathrooms, vulgar Low class co-workers. When I opened my own shop and controlled things is when I made lots of money and had quality of work life. Becoming your own bass is best. I suggest taking business courses.

Oh boy! I’ll share what my first supervisor told me back in 1979 on my first day. “ Kid, you got three years to get out of here” oh I said what do you mean? “ he said after three years if you’re still here you’re stuck here. Use your head get out of this Place it will kill you overtime” I didn’t listen to him and spent 21 years in the shipyards. My supervisor asked me how old do I think he is I was afraid to respond because he looked like he was 90.he said I’m 53 and I light one match a day, chain smoker.Holy shit , he was right. I’m 61 now been in the trades 40 years and feeling every minute of it. I spent 21 years of forty years in the shipyards surrounded by drug addicts and killers. I don’t know where this young man is but it’s not San Francisco back in the day. It was not a friendly place. Journeyman beat the shit out of a young guy physically and mentally and as soon as you turn out , you’re laid off. Maybe that’s the way it is now kinder, gentler. Buy a house, get married, have kids and get killed, or otherwise destroyed by the evil empire. Oh yeah, you’re wife is cheating on you while you are at work. Remember, she knows where you are at all times, you do not know where she is at any time. Believe me, she’s fucking someone else.It happened to me and it happened to Countless other guys I worked with. Never trust the bitches.

Arcstreams how many years were you one of those poor suckers who you make fun of? I am happy the company I work for currently needs me 6 to7 days a week, if we hit a recession the will still need me 4 or 5 days a week. At 3 days a week the only place you have to go is out the door, if you hit a recession. Then you either try to live on unemployment or go get a new job with the suckers again. I don't know where your from but in the U.S. unless you have a government job the security of your job is marginal at best. If you work in manufacturing and are that cocky you are naïve! Best of luck to you :)

When I started, back in the late 1970's, the day would start when the old timers would give me some money. Then I would head down and get a few cups of coffee, and a couple of half-dogs of Canadian Mist. The old boys would have to get 'tightened up' before they would light up an arc or head up on the iron. After lunch, the crew would be smaller as most of the guys weren't able to leave the bar after lunch. Oh well, things have certainly changed!

Ok so it’s sounds like you have experience, I’m going into my Senior of High School this September and I an genuinely interested in welding. How do I start up my journey into it? I will be taking a Welding class at my high school which spans the whole school year but what should I do after? I definitely want to be in a Union and I am eyeing up pipe welding of some sort. Should I join a Union/get an apprenticeship or should I go to a trade school? There is a Lincoln Tech school near me as well as the Local 602 Steamfitters which is kinda near me. If you were in my position what would you do?

Being a welder is an awesome career ;however, invest in a small fan to blow all the smoke away from coming up in your face while you weld. A face mask is just a preventive notion that obviously works well however you need the FAN to expedite all the flame contaminates away from your face so you too could live to see your grand children grow up.

@andyvoytko
@andyvoytko 7 жыл бұрын
The hexavalent chromium from tig welding stainless is still toxic even though you can't see any smoke. Also, ozone can be created, and it irritates the lungs. That's worse than the little bit of smoke from a little oil coating being burned off.

My teacher used to say he was an idiot over and over for ever becoming a welder. I think this is a false representation of how it is to weld in general. Id say its a boring job (fits me perfect im not complaining) the pay is very low, where I live the average wage is 21.000 SEK (I earn 34k but thats not very representative) 21k SEK = 2100 EURO. Most of the time they dont care about quality and even if they do, the company you work for usually lack the knowledge so they dont even know what quality they want. You can pretty much pick up a beggar outside the first best store and put a MAG, TIG or whatever in its hand. Alot of strength is usually not required but.. it can be very exhausting depending on what you do.
