Hi everyone! Tonights video is all about painting in some detail. I am not always a massive fan of too much detail but sometimes is can be lovely! Let me know what you think of this detail compared to the part 1 video last week! I always think detail should be viewed from a distance not up close which is hard to do in an instructional video! That is why I put some images of the painting framed from a distance at the end of the video. The look of something up close can be very different than a few meters away! Happy painting!

it's a magnificent sky showing lights and darks with the birds skimming the water. I appreciate the darks in the painting with the reflections.... it shows such a beautiful relationship of water and sky! bravo!

It was great to see you work in such detail - something we don’t often see. For me the addition of the detailed dock drew me to the light of the sky. Seeing it framed and at a distance really brought out the composition. Thank you Scott!

Hi Louis! Thanks! Glad you liked the detail and like you say it is a line for the eye to follow to take you to the light on the water and then probably to the right. Always good to share how it looks from a distance. Thanks Louis! You watch a lot of my videos! Thanks!

I learned so much from your commentary. Talking about focus, height, tone. I'd be thrilled if I could produce this. I aim for appreciating parts of my practice! The birds definitely work. I like the detail versus the loose. Also liked seeing the whole picture, then pan left to right and we see lots of landscapes coming into view

Glad you liked it Gretel! And yes I agree the birds helped add some balance to the composition.

Hi Scott, thank you so much for Part 2 of this Beautiful painting. I love the addition of the birds, the highlights, and the negatively painted boats. I'm certainly not qualified to make judgments on the addition of detail this week, but I did get the distinct feeling that you didn't really have the belief in adding any details. Believe me Scott, your work is Masterful, detailed or otherwise, and Tony Smibert will undoubtedly be proud of you. Thank you, and take care ;)

Hi Audrey! You are too kind! Yes I am not hugely confident adding detail and tend to love and gravitate towards artworks that have less detail. Thanks for your lovely words! Happy painting Audrey! Cheers Scott

Beautiful painting as always. I love the birds and their reflections. I’ve been learning to draw and haven’t been painting much. Hope the drawing helps!

Thanks Sue! Yes a great skill drawing! I could really spend some more time doing that at some stage. You don't need to paint all the time. It is good to jump into different things that are in the same vein. Let me know if you find some teaching that is really good! Cheers Scott

Thank you for part 2. I am not an expert but you asked, so..... seeing the detail up close is so different from far away. The added detail, from a distance, seems awkward. It's still a beautiful painting, but I'd prefer leaving it finished at the end of part 1.

Hi Betty! Yes I agree. I think the detail is actually to the wrong scale slightly which makes it feel slightly strange. Too small. Thanks for the feedback. Cheers Scott

Lovely! The finished painting is great, but since you asked the question I think the addition of the jetties in part 2 took away from the clarity of the painting finished in part one, though the birds at the very end of part 2 added to the serenity of the part 1 painting. Just a personal opinion 😘

Thanks Sue! It is so interesting. It seems about 50/50 detail vs not which just goes to show that you just need to paint what you feel is right and then live with that as no matter what you do some will think it is the right decision and some not. Thanks for commenting it is really interesting to hear peoples point of view!

Hi Joy! Thanks! Yes I can put it up for sale on my website if you would like to buy it. I'll do it over the weekend. To be honest I don't find the time much at the moment to sell paintings as I am too busy with videos for here and Patreon and other online courses. I'm sure that will change in a while!
