Synopsis:
In "Anukul," Sujoy Ghosh #masterfully adapts Satyajit Ray’s visionary tale, offering a #glimpse into a future where #ArtificialIntelligence intertwines with human values. Saurabh Shukla plays a pivotal #role, adding depth to the narrative with his nuanced #performance. As the plot unfolds, viewers are invited to contemplate ethical dilemmas, the nature of consciousness, and the boundaries between man and machine. The film doesn't provide easy answers but instead invites a profound exploration of these timeless themes.

Satyajit Ray was a true visionary. This story was written in 1976... way way before Terminators, Transformers and iRobot... And the ones who are questioning the ending of the story or the motive of Nikunj should read the original story... that should give them a better perspective!!!

You realize, of course, that Asimov's "robot" stories were written between 1940 and 1950, then compiled and published as a book titled "I, Robot" in 1950? And that the publisher gave it that title against Asimov's wishes, as it was the title of a 1939 short story by Earl and Otto Binder? The plot of the movie with Will Smith has very little to do with either Asimov's or Binder's fiction, borrowing only the concept of Asimov's three Laws of Robotics, and leaving all nuance and subtlety behind. Asimov's robotics stories were psychological mysteries that explored how the workings of the three Laws might play out in actuality. We have yet to see a proper movie made of them.

There is book that has 101 short stories written by Satyajit Ray. I read this story from that book when I was 11 and I didn’t have any idea about androids. With time, I started to realise, how brilliant Ray was and he was undoubtedly way out of his time. Now every time I watch any episode of black mirror, I think to myself, Bengalis can make so much better short films with Ray's story that he wrote decades ago.

There is possibly a dark ending to the story, Mr.Nikunj knew that his brother was drunk and would attack Anukul but he did not strictly warn him against it(did not mention the consequence). Somewhere, in his heart, he wanted his brother to be electrocuted, so that he could get the property and money. This is in line with Mahabharata's story (fight of cousin brothers over land). It was Nikunj's dharma to pay the bills and he would go to any extent (even killing his brother like in Mahabharata) to fulfil his dharma. In the end when Anukul hints towards his heart is a symbolic gesture to that. or am I reading too much into it?
@anindyaroychowdhury
@anindyaroychowdhury 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely...that symbolic gesture was an allusion to their earlier exchange of "how do you know when it is appropriate to lie"...a very layered film and, as many have pointed out....more layered (and different) from the original story which is relatively straight forward.

What most people are forgetting to acknowledge is the writer of the story. Satyajit Ray has written so many sci-fi stories much before the creation of E.T. and other A.I. movies. It really feels bad that we Indians have very limited exposure to the works of such a genius with the exception of the Bengali people. Hope we can respect the genius and bring out more works from this great man in mainstream cinema.

Count it as 495.. I'm the 495th one. And it's not because I don't "realize" who Satyajit Ray is, it's because I probably have more "realization" about the man than someone like you who can't even spell his name. Let me ask you one simple question.... Have you read the story "Anukul"? Do you think this adaptation did justice to the piece? Do you really think Satyajit Ray made this bull-crap himself? No, he didn't. This is NOT a film made by the man himself. This is made by some dork who has simply re-interpreted Ray's story to cater the taste of the so called "youth" and "modern times". I.... someone who idolizes Ray, someone who grew up reading and watching "his" creation... find this "adaptation" DISGUSTING. I couldn't connect to a single frame of this entire film. That's my reason for pressing the "Dislike" button. Here you have found one of those guys who pressed the 'dislike" button... Hope you'd find more

wow!! what a story and the short film captures all the nuisance correctly. Nikunj ji had to kill his brother just like Mahabharat. In his heart he felt that injustice is happening with him. An undeserving fellow was getting all the resources which are rightfully his, Just like Duryodhana in Mahabharata. He realized 'that ONE important thing' and stopped mid-sentence and ordered Anukul to get coffee for Niranjan. He knew what is about to happen. He had to fight and uphold his dharma. What a vivid imagination!!! The very thought that this concept was thought of almost 8+ decades ago is surreal!!! Satyajit Ray is universally known for his cinematic craft ... one of a realistic portrayal of life: human suffering, life's challenges-- poverty and illness, disadvantages of the rural folks, their aspirations, and sometimes even triumphs despite the adversities. It is almost inconceivable that the "Master of Realism" (the term "Parallel Cinema" had not yet been invented when his "Apu Trilogy" was screened) would even delve into fiction and fantasy. It is uncanny! This story is written almost to perfection, with nuances ... Ahem... man-machine interface!

Sujoy Ghosh, Parambrata Chatterji, Satyajit Roy............ and a Kahani...Total Bangali nostalgia...... when in the last scene 'Anukul' keeps his hand on his heart and smiles, Nikunj ji's smile and smirk... I kept my hand in my heart and whispered God! God! and I was smiling :) Sujoy Ghosh makes actors express a lot through smile and how beautifully it works on us, we the audience. Loved............. it.

Don't you feel that nowadays shaky camera movement is overused? Look at David Fincher's movies. He keeps the camera oh so integrated with the character he is showing. Here, in the starting, even when two people are sitting down, the camera is shaky. Kinda kills the effect and the scene.

I am very disappointed with the misunderstanding of Mahabharata chapter. Lord Krishna was encouraging Arjun to fight not for land and money but for a better society. Lord Krishna cannot fight for land and money. It is we (humans) who have a narrow mindset and use these words accordingly. This film can have a negative impact on the society.

My first introduction to Satyajit Ray was in school when we had to read Pather Panchali as a part of our English syllabus. It left a profound impression on my mind. Story's gist is that Saurbh shukla cud hv told his brother about anukul's electric shock thing but he chose to remain silent for his own benifit as shown when he delibrately says nothing after saying "mat tang kar use , tujhe pata hai na ki woh...." and dat complements his situation with arjun that his dharma ,at present, is to get the property to secure his living ... AND Anukul on the other hand learned the fact from Geeta that to remain with his owner (anukul's dharma) in the time of his joblessness he must kill his brother ................ What a story... So as he understood that his master cousin's wouldn't be good heir to the property and his master also needs the money at this moment, So as his sole duty towards his master to serve. This compels him to do so and that descion he describes by doing the gesture of his hand on his heart.

Amit Jha "The quiet but deep observation, understanding and love of the human race, which are characteristic of all his films, have impressed me greatly. … I feel that he is a “giant” of the movie industry. Not to have seen the cinema of Ray means existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon. I can never forget the excitement in my mind after seeing it (Pather Panchali). It is the kind of cinema that flows with the serenity and nobility of a big river. People are born, live out their lives, and then accept their deaths. Without the least effort and without any sudden jerks, Ray paints his picture, but its effect on the audience is to stir up deep passions. How does he achieve this? There is nothing irrelevant or haphazard in his cinematographic technique. In that lies the secret of its excellence" - Akira Kurosawa on Satyajit Ray

It was 1976 when Satyajit Ray thought of this concept. Not even TV was established properly, no internet, no personal computers, only old black wired telephones with round dials used to be there. He was born at least 50 years ahead of his time, if not more. A novelist with exceptional skills, classical musician with fantastic scores, an illustrationist to perfection, a film maker per excellence, and finally a visionary. His father and even grand-father were extremely talented as well, however, he outdone everyone. We lost him rather too early in 1992. মহারাজা, তোমারে সেলাম!!!

This is written by Great Satyajit Ray.. Awesome representation by Sujoy Ghosh.. Wonderful screenplay.. The mystery actually lied in the last scene.. Where it signified that Anukul can be hired forever.

Yes, this was the true climax of the story... He ordered Anukul to get coffee for his brother, knowing well what's going to happen! So cool.....

I was apprehensive of this ending but blaming teacher with bad intention is not totally right . May be the teacher was clouded with other thoughts about job, uncle death & his inheritance & his love. May be teacher did not wanted it become an issue(about high voltage shock) since his brother was such heavy drinker & it is a threat to people who are against robots. May be he thought this time his brother will be softer while dealing.
