Denmark had their biggest army in the 1860’s with I think about 44000 troops, now they have about 18000 active troops

Well, maybe in the past. But in the more modern history Russia has small (for it's size) and declining population. The reason is that a high percentage of man had to serve in military, and the country was generally always focused on extending the military.

@@Disorder2312 It should be pointed out that only 1/3 of they active military is ground force... was. NATO has over three times more personel and that speaking only of the peace time. Quality is another topic.

Fun fact: During WW1 Bulgaria had the *largest* army size per capita. 1 200 000 soldiers enlisted, more than 800 000 battle ready and fighting. That meant that practically 1 in 5 Bulgarians were in the army for a certain time.

I wish that was true but sadly China has 3m with reserves and the India does not have enough reserves to beat that but 1 Indian soldier is 100 times better then a Chinese soldier

Fun fact: by the end of both World Wars Australia of all places was in the top 5 biggest air forces and navies, also a large army… of course defeating the Axis and Central Powers and getting rid of their militaries really helped too. Edit: Shoutout to the New Zealand cameo @10:24*

New Zealanders (specifically Māoris) were the best desert infantry of WWII. Not sure how (then again, they were Mãoris), or wether being good at killing is really a compliment, but it’s definitely an interesting fact. While Montgomery acknowledged the 9th Division, 2nd AIF as being pivotal to winning the 2nd of El Alamein, the Māoris were and are widely considered to have been the best in the business.

Bulgaria had a population between 3-4 million in the two balkan wars and first world war yet the army was 400K and between 600k in the two balkan wars and later was around 1m and a half during the first world 1 while Bulgaria had a population of around 3.8 million

That is just not true. There is no country in the world that was capable of having 25% of population as soldiers of any type ever! That kind of soldier/civilian ratio will lead to your army starving to death in a few months. Maybe Romans or Mongols came close to those numbers, but ever since start of usage of firearms critical number of army size is about 10% of population.

I don't know if Drew realizes that in times of peace, the size of the army doesn't matter that much. It's just politics. Fun video though, I hope he does the military budget version of that video, which shows quite a different picture.

no, it acutaly count a lot, a time of peace is nothing but a short time between two wars, for any country. So the size of your army during time of peace is actaly very relevant about your economics, military quality and political influence.

The Red Army reached its peak in 1945 when it had 12.5 million soldiers including men and women [1]. This was when the Red Army had the largest number of personnel

The drop of France army in the early 2000 is due to the end of military service. All of a sudden you don't have 200k to 300k underpayed draftees to fill up the ranks lol!

Damn US had 10 M army in 1942 when their population was 120M approx. For comparation, north korea has 26 M population and their army is 1.3 M , like half that of US in terms of per capita compared to 1940s US. Now the movie captain America makes so much sense
