@@summerrayneoakes You seemed quite in control of your faculties, dear, but I can see how it must've been a bit dizzying. t would've been nice if he could've given you some cuttings..but maybe this would be a problem getting through customs with your treasures... Your knowledge & familiarity shone through. I could see his respect for your genuine appreciation & knowledgeable observations grow. I think he learned a thing or two from you too. He seemed a very respectful man, towards you, & not at all like an arrogant expert,.

I've never actually heard of a Hoya before. Only really gotten into botany in the past two years; I'm only 19 and still have plenty of studying to do, but it's always nice when you learn about something totally new!

I put my Hoyas outside in my shade garden last summer. I'd never had the plants outdoors before. Hoyas are related to our native milkweed species and a Monarch butterfly actually laid eggs on my plants. I found caterpillars nibbling on the leaves! Now I'm wondering if Monarchs would pollinate the flowers. I am so astounded by that Hoya collection. It's so beautiful!

(27:30) - Their substrate culture is similar to orchid medium. It retains moisture and drains perfectly. They repot yearly because when the coir breaks down it retains too much water and doesn’t drain well , which can cause root rot. Over time it also tends to accumulate salts, etc., from fertilizer and any tap water used, which can weaken the root system. Their culture provides ideal conditions for vigorous root growth by replicating conditions found in nature where the growing medium is microbially dynamic and constantly refreshing itself and being leached clean by rain. This is especially important for epiphytic and semi-epiphytic hoyas which fair poorly in ‘sour’ soil. ~ (shout out) - Doug Chamberlain recently posted a video on his experience growing Hoya griffithii, one of the rare plants discussed herein.

Wonderfull video. Beautiful healthy plants displayed inside of perfectly ideal glasshouses. Brilliantly shot footage so as to be easy informal and relaxed yet packed with interest and knowledge. The narrative is so well delivered proving Summer has excellent communication skills. Captivating from start to finish. The time it took me to view felt more like 5 minuites. Well done to all that made this video.

Thank you for yet another magnificent field trip! I had no idea there were so many forms of Hoya, or of their cultural needs & no idea about the world my variegated Hoya was a part of. I know that scent of the velvety pinkish white bloom well, & the fascinating little red dots clustered in the center, that look like candy. Too bad I had no idea what type of soil it needed. It survived for maybe 15, 20 years, then began looking poorly. I didn't have a clue what it needed. It struck a chord of recognition when you described the way mine looked before it finally kicked the bucket. I had moved to a place with much larger windows & better light. Thought it would thrive in such good, direct S/W facing morning blasts of sun. As you pointed out, it grew weary looking & paler, & even had a couple leaves turn yellow. It was losing it's waxy coating, looking flat & dull. I thought it was drying in a sunnier spot, so gave it more water. That was the final straw. Now I get it...

I have a Pubicalyx- I THINK it's the Royal Purple, but I'm not sure. I fell for the beautiful flecks on the leaves- but it has been giving me SO much love lately. I'm not super well versed in my plants yet, but it's put out five new leaves in the last two months, and I am pretty sure it's growing a few flower spurs. It's my one Hoya still going crazy- I don't think it got the memo that winter is resting time!
