Number 4 my ass. Bird is the greatest collegiate player in history. Leading a mid major Indiana State team to the title game is an epic accomplishment that qualifies him outright.

Its hard to argue against what you said....It truly is amazing what he did.....I'd say maybe Bill Walton ahead a him, possibly.....? However Walton's teams were loaded with NBA talent....Indiana State had good players but nothing like the big dog teams like UCLA and Michigan St that year....Indiana State was nothing before Bird, nothing after Bird, but with him a contender for the national championship...pretty remarkable.

When Bird was a senior and even a junior, he could have been an all-star in the NBA. If Bird played for MSU in 79, he would have been the star, not magic. He was that good, and Magic knew it too. 33-0 until the final game. IMHO He is the best college player ever and the best SF ever(LeBron, please...in the 4th quarter, who do you want on your team if you had to pick?), and arguably the best all around basketball player ever to have played.

I'll say Lew Alcindor is the greatest college player but the best I've ever seen myself with my two eyes is Bill Walton . Larry Legend is the best Small Forward to ever play in the NBA bar none..

You had me when you restricted your topic to the college game. LeBron could do so many more things than Larry to help his team win. For all his talent, Larry was never a defensive stopper. LeBron could guard anyone on the court, from the quickest PG to the biggest 5. Your first sentence is inconsequential since he was already in his 4th year as a junior in college. Your case for greatest college player is valid.

Larry Bird is my all time favorite player to watch play. He was more fun to watch than the Globe Trotters, but was very seldom funny. He would do something, usually several times a game, and just about every game, that would make your jaw drop, shaking your head, and smiling, always in the flow and context of the game. When Walton was with the Celtics, and they won the championship, they were phenomenal, with passing, rebounding, shot blocking, and shooting. They even had McHale and Parrish making some good passes. Outstanding!!!

Go watch every game film he played, and tally up the points that were shot from today's 3 point range and tell me how many points he would have had for his career if he had a 3 point line. Greatest ever.

Legend is my favorite of all time!! But Pistol Pete is the one that would have a higher ppg from a 3 point line, to his already 44 for college career...🤯

Bird led a team of basically division 2 caliber players to the NCAA championship, Much. State had 3 NBA players on that team inc. Magic. Remove Bird from ISU and they're a ten win team at best, remove Magic from MSU and they're probably still a tournament quality team.

I’m a student at ISU now and when you walk into our arena for a basketball game there are two things glaringly obvious: The seats are damn near empty and there is a single banner hung up for our national title appearance. I wish another Larry would come along…

Never thought about that way before but the guy was right : Bird dragging his team along undefeated in 78-79 and almost winning it all was the greatest year ever by a college basketball player. And I’m a Duke fan who watched Christian Laettner in action. Laettner had a wealth of talent around him.

Correction,,,Larry Bird is the best College player EVER! I bet your list of top 5 players all went to BIG COLLEGE Basketball programs. But Bird didn't go to ANY OF THOSE SCHOOLS. In Fact, I seriously doubt that Indiana State will ever get another invite to the tournament. And get this....He was a Walk On!

This is so stupid. If you're only basing it off of college career only, Bird is easily number 1 in the modern era. Nobody else would've taken Indiana State to the Final. ESPN is terrible.

Okay name another, any other, NBA player that could pass like Larry Bird. That's right you can't and we all know Larry is higher than number four all time. Oh and his scoring average could have been much higher if was a ball hog like some of the big scoring players.

He would never have had that dream season (or any other) at ISU and all it gave him and taught him. He wouldn’t have played that NCAA game against Magic. Might not have been drafted by the Celtics or gotten that great contract.

These debates about where some athlete stands in the pantheon of athletes -- they are all boring. And meaningless, esp. among players of different eras where the game was different. Each player brings their own particular talents -- it is like appreciating art. I watched scrolled through this video and saw very few actual clips of Larry Bird playing basketball. Everything else was sports talk babble.

1. Lew Alcindor 2. Bill Walton 3. Bill Russell 4. Christian Laettner 5. Larry Bird 6. Patrick Ewing 7. Ralph Sampson (Should have been higher. He underachieved) 8. Oscar Robertson 9. Jerry West 10. John Lucas Indiana State wasn’t in the NCAA tournament before Larry Bird got there and hasn’t been to the tournament since he left.

Uh...Pistol Pete not being in your Top 5 is a pretty glaring omission. Same with not including David Thompson on you list. Maravich could arguably be #1...but definitely not worse than 2, Bird should be #4 , then David Thompson, then Bill Russell, then Laettner. Hakeem should replace Ralph. Just my 2 cents.
