When Larry smacked his face on the floor it fractured his eye socket and gave him a concussion, but sitting in the locker room he saw the pacers getting cocky and winning the game, and in Larrys own words he said "not in my building" and soon as he saw the team doctor leave the room he put his jersey back on and came back out hurt to win the game - what a friggin legend.

To be fair, it wouldn't be allowed today. No doctor would let a player out of their sight if the player was concussed, and the league would step in and not let the player play. Not saying that Bird wasn't the toughest player in NBA history (in terms of pain tolerance), since he was, and not saying that any player would try to come back 30 minutes later from a broken cheek and double vision and finish the game, but it also would not be allowed.

@Ken D That no-foul against Rambus was in 1984, the rules on Flagrant Fouls was not introduced to Basketball till the 1990-1991 season. He totally dominated the 80's. The pain Larry played with was nothing short of heroic. His trash talking was at another level, he would tell the other team what the play was going to be and still make the game winning shot.

Larry was by far the smartest player to ever play basketball... and he's top 5 ever easily and in my eyes the best SF to ever play... Lebron is no.2 on that category and that's a fact... not some old head talking shit... a great Larry team would beat any great Bron team any day of the weak... better basketball... However I don't like Wilt as top 3... Kareem was much much MUCH better than Wilt... @@sportschool3537 well, ive 'seen 'em all' aswell, and depending on what exactly we mean by 'greatest', then i think its definitely debatable. larry wonx 3x MVP in a row, which seems pretty unstoppable to me. plus, you could stop MJ. bird/celtics did 6x in the playoffs...and we arent talking about who was the most athletic, so thats irrelevant. a larry team would beat ANY team, not just bron's. he was the most effective team player ever. any position. he turned the celtics around by 36 games in his rookie year with no other players brought into the team. and wilt changed the rules of the game. literally. he also set some unbeatable records. yes, he was selfish, but that doesnt take away from his achievements. you realise just saying 'kareem is the greatest' doesnt make it so, right? especially when you dont bother to give your reasons.

@@derkaiser1306 You are spot on! Wilt Chamberlain was the NBA’s first Goat. He changed the game of the time, with rules even changed solely because of him. The game that was played after Wilt was then mastered by Larry Bird. No one before or ever since has ever displayed the complete skill and understanding of the game as a team sport like Bird, and he became the second player to achieve goat status. Michael Jordan changed the game into an individual contest with overpowering speed and athleticism to go up and over defenders, bypassing and flying high above the game that Bird had mastered, to redefine the game yet again, and become the NBA’s third goat.

Can't remember who said it, but a current/recent player said Bird wouldn't be good in today's league. Bird's reply was "You don't think I'd be good in a league where you can't touch me?" Classic. You need to watch more videos. He had a terrible back injury that causd him to lay in traction before games in his later years. You'll see him lying on his stomach rather than sitting on the sidelines. He broke fingers in his early years, college I believe, that caused him to not be able to fully feel the ball with that hand. He had two Achiles tendon surgeries and only missed 6 games that season. He was a brawler on and off the court, trash talking players and coaches alike, calling shots as he ran down the court and was still unstoppable. Watch some more vids, I'll bet you a dime to a dollar he rises in your ranking to at least top 10 if not top 5 all time. BTW, Jordan even says he learned a lot of his moves from LB. He's my all time #1 for the depth of his game...nothing he couldn't do.

Yes, punching someone is a foul, even back then. But there was LEGAL physicality: leaning, bumping and grinding, some held jerseys, hands in your back, and real epic giants waiting in the paint if you DID manage to get by with all that going on. No denying it slowed scoring tremendously... even the LEAGUE admits they changed all those rules to facilitate more scoring. Guys like Bird, MJ, Magic, and Dr J who got their numbers dealing with all that CANNOT be compared to today's players. Today they stroll to the hoop untouched and dunk. Just watch everyone just step out of the way when LeBron does. Not the same game at ALL.

"Pistol" Pete Maravich and his pops came up with the No-Look pass, Larry learned it from Maravich and taaught the rest of the team to always be on the lookout for a no-look pass or a tap pass. The Pistol played his last season with the Celtics in Birds rookie year, which was also the same time the Three Point line was first used in basketball, later they added the shot clock. So, Pistol scored 68 against the Knicks with no 3-Point Line. If someone today didn't play rough back in what you call fouls, would not last in the NBA.

Even back when I was young watching them late 80s early 90s Celtics team Bird was already a legend. Bird also played against legends like magic, James worthy, dr J Xavier McDaniels Michael Jordan Dominique Wilkins and many many other legends of the game. Yes they played a more physical game but they played with skill too. Happy to see the new generation finding out about one of the GOATS ☘️☘️☘️

Bird was the leader that drove the team to success for many seasons. Listen to his book, you'll get the total mindset of him as a player and later a coach. He told new players if you're watching the shot to see if its going in then you can watch it from the other team's bench because we'll trade you. Pass and move and if he saw you standing still he would get on you. I met him in 1982, had lunch with him and he was pretty funny and down to earth. I was able to watch only a few of his game because I joined the Marines and traveled too much. He was the goat! He tore Jordan up and in my opinion, if he went as long as Lebron for his career, he probably would have set a lot of records that could not be beak.

You have a lot more to enjoy, try the videos - "Larry Birds 50 most amazing assists" and also for some amazingly elite Celtics passing in the Bird era check out the video - "86 Celtics Tribute, The Beautiful Game" - then theres some really GREAT trash talking videos showing how larry got into the other players heads with his trash talking, some really great Larry Bird stories in those videos told by other NBA hall of famers themselves.

Nice reaction!! You know there was a time when they were only two teams on the court. Players will be walking off with black eyes and holding their arm cuz the elbows all night. Refs let them play and I can't imagine today's play is being able to power through that. Nice observation like your channel

When magic read that Tulare Larry had a corresponding uniform shirt on his shoulder where he declared magic the greatest player of all time. They were really really good friends so they never let their friendship stand in the way of a great rivalry and between the two of them they saved basketball which says it all right there.

The man had eyes in the back of his head. I was 4 when Bird joined the Celtics so I was privileged to watch him his entire career. I mean no disrespect to todays players but they can't hold a candle on the 80's players. Bird once played with a toe infection for 3 weeks before seeing a doctor. They had to cut 2 inches in between his toes so it could drain. No pain meds, just a beer and went out and played that same night. End of the night even his sock was soaked with blood

I was a showtime Lakers fan from that era. Magic may be my 1st pick at PG but that slow hick from French Lick is the 2nd best player I’ve watched With Larry’s passing, rebounding with the most clutch shooting definitely in 🐐 conversation. Bird taught Jordan the mental strength it takes to be champion & Bad Boys the physical barrier. What an era with Showtime & Rockets out west.

Keep in mind at his retirement ceremony in the Boston Garden, that was a sold out a crowd and it wasn’t even a game night. As far as trash talking, Bird is the biggest trash talker in the history of the league. He made Dr. J so pissed by just constantly saying two numbers to him. The number of points he (Bird) had and then the number of points Dr. J had…..by the time they were in the third quarter Bird was saying 42 and 6 ….Dr. J was so pissed he went fist to cuffs on Bird while Barkley and Malone held Bird’s arms behind his back. Danny Ainge said Bird even told Dr. J he should retire.

the players might be more athletic now, but the extra muscles and fitness are pointless because the game isnt physical anymore. bring 80s players to today and theyll all be better because of the freedom on the ball theyll have. take a player from today back then and theyll be worse because they cant handle being touched or having a minor injury.

@thatmanstumototours2270

The idea he wasn't athletic is silly. He wasn't a leaper or a sprinter(Every Olympic Team is filled with leapers and sprinters. But NBA skills?, not so much) He was extremely well coordinated, had unbelievable hand to eye coordination with either hand, had very quick feet and great balance and above average strength. And he was nearly 6'10". He was simply a natural at the actual "game" of basketball, which when combined with his tremendous work ethic, instincts and mental and physical toughness made him one of the greatest to ever play the game. Period. He(and his fellow players) were hacked, bumped, slapped and held at some point on virtually every play(obviously, they themselves did plenty of hacking, bumping, slapping and holding). For better or for worst, the comparative ease and comfort with which current NBA(and most recently, even College) players are free to move around the floor seeking and freely taking their shots, driving the hoop without fear of bodily harm(search Magic and Isaiah shaking hands at tip and then Magic delivering a perfectly violent forearm shiv to Isaiah's face(blood was drawn) for having the sheer audacity to come down the lane. Little wonder the modern player is seen as faster and more graceful than their predecessors.. Again, for better or for worse, it isn't the same game and one must believe that a player who could score(rebound, dribble) while getting (relatively and comparatively) mugged would be just fine when not being mugged. They might even look fast and graceful.(This is a much repeated comment by me. Several Folks have suggested I just copy and paste it, so I do.)

magic and bird were very close friends. bird was one of the few people to call and remain in contact with magic after he came out as HIV positive. in fact, while bird did play a few years longer after magic retired, he said that without him, playing basketball wasn't as fun for him anymore. then when the dream team was being put together, magic was asked to join. his answer: "i'll only do it if larry does it." and without bird and magic being on the team, it probably wouldn't have been the team it turned into.

I played D1, 77-81. I've seen teammates pick up teeth in a game, I've broken a nose or two and a guy's ribs, sent a guy to hospital with his head split open around the eyes and needing stitches. You got no idea how rough it was. NBA much more so. Animals. Frightening.

Larry legend was special. He was the most complete player to ever play the game. People always say he is not athletic, he's slow, he can't jump. But he always found a way to beat everybody he played. Excluding the most athletic player to ever play Jordan. Just imagine if bird had half of Jordan's athleticism. Plus, bird played most of his career injured. Bad feet and back problems.Jordan said nobody gave him more trouble than larry bird. That says it all. Larry legend is the GOAT! I'm grateful that I'm one of the lucky few that can say. I saw larry legend play in person. Trust one he was different.
