I grew up a fan of Dr. J, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan, but the player who could beat you the most ways with the most skills was Larry Bird. Bird had the best combination of inside scoring, mid-range scoring, 3-point scoring, passing, rebounding, defense, basketball IQ, trash talking, work ethic, clutch performance, and leadership. Bird had it all from day 1 in the NBA. The others gained some of these things after several years. Bird was the Batman of the NBA. He was always several moves ahead of the competition, best clutch shooter of all-time, #2 all-time with winning percentage (Jordan is #40), he had the passing gift, and he could beat you more ways than just shooting. Jordan was dangerous when he had the ball. Bird was always dangerous - with or without the ball. Bird is top three all-time with Jordan and LeBron, but Bird is the best small forward of all-time. Hands down. "If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan. If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I’d take Larry Bird." - Legendary Lakers Coach Pat Riley “I would much rather guard Michael Jordan than Larry Bird, because you have to play the game as a thinker when you’re playing [Bird]. You have to get inside his mind. Larry wasn’t quick, he couldn’t jump really high, but there were just some sleepless nights.” -James Worthy on Larry Bird, via ESPN SportsCentury " The difference between Jordan and Bird was that Jordan made you look slow, Bird made you look stupid. " - James Worthy “Larry Bird can’t jump, and he’s not that quick… But he makes up for it by using his head, analyzing the opponent. It makes him better than the competition… Consequently, he doesn’t have a weakness.” - Michael Jordan Jordan is the best scorer in NBA history, but Bird was the unicorn. There are no players like him in NBA history with so many skills and winning percentage. And there may never be another again, so it is difficult for younger fans to understand what Bird did. They focus on Jordan’s scoring and defense and miss all the other skills and winning that Bird brought to the table every game.

MJ is the GOAT athletically, but IQ-wise Bird was able to do so many things offensively and defensively (without being fast, or able to soar like MJ), that he is the GOAT as an all-around basketball player/coach/executive. He never used the 3-point line until he hit the pros, and only averaged about 3 per game, but he used it so strategically to be the winning shot. Still, he averaged about 24 points per game, 10 boards per game, 6 assists per game, and 2 steals per game. He was the MVP 3 years IN A ROW; he WON THE FIRST THREE 3-point contests (I think Curry has lost it 5 of 7 times, but he is supposed to be the best?). BTW, Bird only did it for those 3 years so he retired the undefeated champion. He was the FIRST player to become a member of the 50-40-90 club, and he is only one of 3 who has done it multiple times, by doing it the first 2 years IN A ROW. He was Rookie of the Year; NBA All-Star 12 of his 13 years, All-Star game MVP in his third year; All-NBA First Team his first 9 SEASONS IN A ROW; All-Defensive Second Team 3 YEARS IN A ROW. The season after he won his third 3-point contest and his second 50-40-90 accomplishment, he was only able to play in six games due to Achilles tendon surgery on both heels, and he retired three years later with severe back problems. So severe, that he needed to lie on the floor when he wasn't in the game, and sometimes could barely put his uniform on. Funny how he has done so many things consecutively. Bird was the Coach of the Year with the Indiana Pacers, and Executive of the Year, as well. So, I'd say Larry Bird is THE GOAT OF BASKETBALL! Please, don't anyone take offense to anything. I'm just an old lady from Southern Indiana who is also an alum of Indiana State University Sycamores where Larry Bird starred, and was Player of the Year. I may be a little biased, but I have a very good argument to back it up.

Magic made easy passes look hard. Larry made hard passes look easy. That's the best description that I've heard. Their first nationally televised competition was actually in the NCAA finals. Larry had led his Indiana State team to their only finals appearance playing against Magic and his Michigan State Spartans. The Lakers-Celtics rivalry basically saved the NBA. When Larry and Magic arrived, the league was fading. The Finals were broadcast on tape delay so people could watch Gunsmoke at its regular time. You had to wait until after the evening news to see it. A Jordan-led Bulls were swept in two different playoff series by the Celtics never beating them in a playoff game and were under .500 overall against them in regular season games during Bird's time on the Celtics rooster. Larry spent his entire playing career with the Celtic organization. The last 5 years or so, he played with what was essentially a broken back, requiring being in traction at times. He had surgery on both achilles tendons and bone spurs in the season he missed. Only three players have won MVP three years on a row, one being Bird and the other two were Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell. Bird also received 67% of all votes cast for MVP during his caree After he retired from the Celtics, he became the coach of the Pacers and took them to their only appearance in the Finals. He was awarded as Coach of the year for his efforts. He then moved up the become the President of Basketball operations for the Pacers and received Executive of the Year for his work in that capacity.

It might be one he saw a couple of seconds before and might be in any direction (including no-look). Larry broke ankles because no one knew what he was going to do with the ball. He often had a clean shot but would pass it to a team mate. Sometimes he looked like he was going to make an easy pass...then shoot a difficult basket. James Worthy, said: ~He would rather guard Michael Jorden, than Larry Bird, because Larry was so unpredictable. He also said: ~Michael Jordon made you look slow, but Larry Bird made you look stupid. Larry, was broke down with a severe back injury, but still played on during his last 7 years while in severe pain. He said near the end of his career that every time he went out on the court, he wondered if he was going to end up in a wheelchair. I always wondered what Larry could have done if he hadn't been injured and played the last 7 years of his career in some horrible pain.

I NEVER get tired of watching Larry Bird highlights! & when I saw Luka D. play I immediately thought of Larry Bird; their aggressive playing styles, precision, dominance of the court & both have an extreme understanding of the game & eyes in the back of their head. Larry Bird was not about flamboyance & theatrics - its been said that many players made easy shots look hard ( theatrics) while Bird made hardshots look easy.

The clip where you see him pass around his back at the waste -- that was actually a tribute Larry did for Magic after he was diagnosed with HIV. Larry was one of the only players who had called him when he found out. He stood by Magic through the whole thing. I don't care if anyone thinks Larry Joe is the GOAT... The man he was spoke so much more... PS -- And he retired because his back was so bad, he was warned that if he continued to play, he could end up paralyzed. He said he didn't want to end up not being able to hold his children. And we he came out after the cheek fracture/concussion -- he was actually seeing double and had to guess which basket to shoot at. He won that game for his team.

"Michael Jordan whippin' his ass"???????????? Jordan is 11 and 17 against Larry Bird, and 0 and 6 against him in the playoffs! Jordan even had his historic highest scoring game ever of 63 points against Larry's Celtics and STILL lost that game! I don't consider that an ass whipping at all, man!

Yes, Bird played 13 seasons but if he hadn't gotten his back injury doing his moms driveway he would've been around a lot longer.
