The late great sports historian and boxing expert, Bert Randolph Sugar, once said that Marvis Frazier's most dangerous concern wasn't Larry Holmes or Mike Tyson; it was his father Joe. Joe thought his son could be an all-time great like himself. He even tried to stare down opponents on behalf of his son in a compensatory effort. Marvis was just one of many that Holmes beat by way of TKO. That said, Marvis Frazier was a good fighter, a clean fighter, and a successful fighter. He ended his career with a 19-2 record. He beat some very good fighters in his career, like James Quick Tillis, Joe Bugner, and a couple of other top 10 heavies in his career. Too many people in boxing tend to write Marvis off as a fighter because of his 2-KO's in the 1st round. Those two fights loss was against heavyweight powerhouses like Champ Larry Holmes and Future Champ Mike Tyson. A 19-2 record ain't bad in anyone's book, especially mine.

Holmes is one of the most underrated champ ever he is in top 3 HW for sure he had best jab, great right hand and he could control his opponent with his left easily,Holmes had 40 when he faced Tyson trust me prime Holmes beats Tyson every time.

larry holmes was 38 vs tyson and was brutal knocked out.later holmes fought with age 42 Olympic gold medalist and future heavyweight champion ray mercer and outclassed him over 12 rounds and then fought holyfield over 12 rounds and lost by points.tyson in his prime wasn't human.he was a machine.

+Onur Dogan The Holmes that fought Tyson was so far over the hill he was under it. It wasn't so much his age, as his lack of activity. He had not been in the ring in 2 years and took the fight on short notice. He was noticeably out of shape. Holmes at 42 was in much better shape and much better prepared.
@onurdogan66008 жыл бұрын
john ulmer holmes was 225 pounds vs tyson.and 233 pounds vs mercer.

Onur Dogan what does that have to with the price of tea in china. Weight doesn't indicate being in shape. He hadn't been in the ring in over two years, did you miss that part? He was well trained and prepared going in against Mercer. Mercer wasn't.

john ulmer tyson was 215 pounds in his prime .vs lewis he was 234 pounds.

I'm not sure whatever made Joe Frazier think his son was ready to go up against the likes of Larry Holmes??......Larry Holmes showed a great deal of CHARACTER in this particular fight. ..

This Holmes would have gave Tyson more of a fight..but i think Tyson still would have won..Cus told him and taught him how to beat Holmes.

Holmes what a beautiful boxing technician. Straight right hand .then head an body punches. Come on Ref stop this before i flatten him again .
@emzid51053 жыл бұрын
this straight right was his trademark, a real beauty to watch. I would say that his only weakness was the fact that he never was much of a hooking boxer. But a complete boxer for sure.

I don't see anywhere in my post where Shavers is mentioned- do you? I agree he had a number of tough fights but he also took on some really poor opposition (especially during the later part of his reign).

quick beating...Marvis was food for the right hand down the pipe....and Holmes was nasty for the flurry at the end lol

Another thing the Marvis bashers forget is that in the mid-to-late 80s, the Cruiserweight division topped off at 190. Marvis was at 200 for this fight and 210 for the Tyson fight...he regularly weight in between those. Nowadays, he would have been a Cruiserweight boxer, and he was probably good enough to have won a title at that weight.

I don't know how anyone can praise holmes without paying homage to Ali. Holmes completely compied the "Great" One's style, right down to that bolo punch he threw in this clip. Marvis Jr. Wasn't as great of a fighter his dad was, but he had a great heart!

The look of despondency on Marvis' face after the stop was awful...We've all been there... They took the fight for the payday... Holmes comments here were all very true...No other heavyweight came close to him at that time and his ring accomplishments easily surpassed Ali, Frasier, Norton, Foreman...And possibly Tyson...
