In this episode Larry takes a deep dive into the Heckler & Koch HK416 rifle. Larry
was involved in the development of the 416 from the beginning when he was
working in Delta. Larry goes through the initial talks with H&K, the goals they had
for the program, what factors drove the search for a new rifle and the final results.
He field strips the 416 and highlights the differences and similarities with the M4
platform.
Larry then looks at the upgrades and changes that H&K has made over the years
to the platform by looking at the HK MR-223-A3. This is an in depth look at an
historic combat rifle by a man who was there from the very beginning.

This is the kind of overview that non-millitairy personnel can go to to really understand the weapon when its on the table. If these episodes where books, i.e technical manual to some extend they would be must reads for anny possible gun owner or enthousiast. Semper fi Mr. Vickers.

william flowers It's cool, we've got the Sa 80A3 which is doing the business for us. We stuck with it, HK did a 93million upgrade for us and we are more than impressed with the result. As for the 416. Luckily our SF's get to play with them Awesome weapon system if a touch heavy but for reliability it's not getting beat. I'd rather have the more reliable system than have an easier time with a weapon I can't rely on.

Still on the fence. Thinking about the Knight SR 30 Pistol with brace .300 BlackOut vs The HK MR556. Well aware of caliber difference. Considering collectability and back pack carry. Would be putting a folder device on brace.

About the ambi mag release. In the French Foreign Legion we would also block the mag release on the left side of the weapon. Especially on when the gun was used on parades... dont know how many guys lost their mags in the middle of the parade rehearsal. Afterwears we would just put a piece of electical tape or duct tape to keep the mag from falling out even if the magrelease war accidentally engaged.

In my opinion the G36 is not a bad weapon - but not a great one either It has some good features and is very reliable but a few things ergonomically and design wise are less than ideal in my opinion It certainly wouldn't be my first choice in a 5.56mm assault rifle - but it wouldn't be my last one either It is very interesting in the respect that both the SCAR and Masada/ACR are heavily G36 inspired - and the G36 is an adaptation of the AR-18 ; truly the unsung hero of the Stoner design team - it has influenced far more weapons after it's introduction than the M16 ever did. Few points I'd like to add: (Mine is MR223 A3 unit #16943 with added adjustable gas block) The piston is not user-serviceable ;) I really have not found anything to do with it. It just runs. When cleaning the gun (every 300-600 rounds suppressed) I put some motor oil or boretech to the vent hole to soften the carbon. No actual reason though for this though.. The trigger gets quite good after some wear from use. It was quite stiff/numb from the factory. The gun really is accurate. Chrome-lined barrel. I have no problem doing 1moa with match ammo. Groups are around 0.6moa to 0.8moa. Over 0.8moa groups are on me, by pulling one shot (so far 1 in 30 shots / 6 groups of Sako Racehead). The mean radius is 10mm. Groups with bulk ammo are on average around 1.3 to 1.5moa. Ofc I do many sub moa groups, but on average. I put 1k rounds through it without cleaning the barrel and it still did easy sub moa 5 shot group with match ammo. The handguard (really never reason to remove it, as the piston needs no cleaning) keeps zero. But I have removed it and put it back without zero change. And my scope mounts partially on it. Mag bevel, mine has pretty big bevel so they have returned to it. Reliability, I had 2 malfunctions when I first got it due to using lower gas setting in the gas block without suppressor (I tested, what happens). It cycles, barely, and sometimes fails to pick up the round correctly. And one malfunction when I shot with gas port on high setting with a suppressor, which is weird. The PMAG was almost empty and probably did not feed fast enough. Around 2.5K in total through it and I have great trust in the rifle.

Arnold Dew pointed out to me that they also put a pin inside the barrel extension that clocks with the extractor, so the extractor doesn't blow out in the event of a case failure. I also noticed on the Hk416A5 that there's a basket over the disconnector tail to prevent hammer slap onto the disconnector.

H&K fixed that on the later versions. I suspect it would also have been on his MR223, mine is 300-400 further on in the serial number range (his lower an upper don't appear to match) and it has it. The firing pin retaining pin is no longer the flimsy cotter pin but rather a captured pin (similar in concept to the takedown pins). It can be removed without tools by just pushing it in with your finger from the opposite side. To reinsert you simply the push bolt face and firing pin simultaneously while lifting the firing pin safety (sounds complicated, but can be easily done with your thumb and index or middle finger). I struggled the first few times with mine (I knew about ARs and their mechanics in theory, but had never taken one apart or even handled one), but once you figure it out, it can be done completely blind in a matter of seconds.

I've only just discovered Larry, but I'm really enjoying his videos! He's clearly highly experienced, extremely knowledgeable and technically proficient... ...and as we'd say over here in the United Kingdom "a real gentleman" too! A quick question for you guys in the United States, who know everything there is to know about the AR15 platform: We're allowed AR15-style guns over here in the United Kingdom on our "Category 1 Firearms Certificate (although the gas piston system has to be removed, making it "a straight pull" as we would call it). I'd love a HK416/MRR223, but I can't find one here, so I'm thinking of buying a "Lewis Machine & Tool Company CQB MRP Defender". The British army use LMT parts on the SA80A2/A3, the LMT L129A1 and the British police use the LMT CQB MRP Defender, and so if it's good enough for them, then it's good enough for me! I was just wondering if any of you guys had any experience and/or opinions of the MRP? Pros, cons and pitfalls of ownership? Thanks in advance! Deano 🤓 🇬🇧

By far the best 416 video I’ve seen. Incredibly informative. I already knew a decent amount about the 416 but still tons I didn’t know. I will say this though. I don’t think the 416 is king of piston AR’s anymore. I would give that title to the Sig MCX. No not really an AR but still shares some similarities.

Correction on safety, only A3 versions and newer have that option. A1 first gen 416 did not have it, even the ones fully made by H&K. -Newer blank fire adapter can be shot away, meaning if you fire a live round with it on, it will just shoot it off, but no cause stoppage etc. -Unscrew is done with carbine hook that ships with weapon, small and big flat head, small for 223, big for 308 version. -Folding front sight=rust bucket if you dont keep it clean and oiled! -Quad rail is god awful to use in operation if no gloves, winter or autum\spring, newer slimmer ones are much better. -Quad raid is also quite heavy, adds allot of front weight, and this is not a good thing. -Front sling attachment for use on quad raid is mostly useless, as unless you screw it so tight that you never intend to take it off, as it keeps falling off! -A1 416 chipps like crazy, quite ugly to look at... -Just FYI, the MR308 A3 does not ship with adjustable gas block either, which sucks, because it is at times a overgassed SOB to shoot with it. -They have made it with A3 and newer that all stuff are not compatible more or less, everything is "HK" brand more or less. So buying HK today is buying "overpriced junk" that have no 3rd party components that fit. -hk rail options =junk -Original A1 buttstock is the fucking suck! back part keeps falling off, nobody ever use the "pocket" in it. Newer A3 slim is much better, for only the cheap price of 499$! -Ambi bolt release and lock=works very good btw! Learn to use it, and you feel handicapped when going back to M4 design. -PMAG gen 3=works just fucking great! DI = better competition gun piston= better military gun!

"Once you get used to the M4..."; "The G36 [...] has never measured up in terms of ergonomics." I think you always have to view those two things together. E.g. I hate the M4 ergonomics, esp. the safety (90° rotation) and the mag release. Has probably something to do with my small hands or so.

The most difficult thought, stems from those of us who live in California. Once you pull a firearm, regardless of justification, you will create panic from the entire public. Doesn't sound unreasonable. But when those around you play the game of phone, 911 will immediately identify you as the threat. Luckily I've never been in the position, and i pray it never happens. But if the threatening situation comes, and I need to draw, that will be at the moment I've identified the need to shoot.

Delta should contract HK to solve the 6.5 Grendel problems. Make a reliable 16 inch Piston 6.5 Grendel with reliable Magazines and Strong Bolts. 6.5 G seems like the perfect Caliber to reach out to 700 yards out of a M4 style platform
