My son does a lot of missionary work in Uganda and he asked me to come up with a system that would not require wood as it is very sparse there! This system was a proto type that could be easily buried in the sand and they could grow food in the heat of the summer!

The thing is with my system I planted it June 1st I have not touched it since except to harvest veggies you can’t do that with Hydroponics just walk away and have the system run itself like this system does! Plant it and forget it that is what makes this system Great!

Hi Larry the idea of using a Walmart bag for air pruning is such a great idea. The cost is a great savings over hydroponic fabric bags that are self pruning. I will integrate your wicking fabric walmart pots with my systems right away. I have everything to make it now and appreciate you sharing this Simple Inexpensive solution to containers that can be used in both dirt and soil less gardening! I have used the dry fertilizer and spikes around the perimeter and it does work very well.

I took you up on your comment of getting stares buying wall-mart bags. I went in for 30 bags. The register I was at had about 4, so with a line forming behind me, the cashier went to about 4 or 5 other cashiers who each had from 3 to 5 bags. I loved getting the stares but they were from customers behind me and not really from wallmart employees as I was expecting. Some people in my situation would get nervous, but I love the attention. Thank you for your utubes...My wife loves the system.

There are nylon fabric in nut milk bags that are 70 and 200 microns of filtering power. You could probably use some of that at the bottom of bag to prevent roots from expanding into the tube. I think you can just get fabric. It easily allows water to pass through.

Good clip. About glue; I only use glue for anything permanent like house-plumbing. As for something like this, I use tuck-tape or electrical-tape. -- (last year for a 140ft watering rig, top-ground-leveled with 1½in pvc criss-cross with 1/16 every foot drip-holes on the top of the pipe, I had some 15 unions, 7 elbows, 9 T-unions. everything help perfect without any tape or glue and no leek. I let the gravity from the near-by container do the watering each night for 30min rain/no-rain) --. That way I can re-fit whenever I want, and also dismantle the whole rig for wintering (up-north canada gets hard winter more often;)

Larry, When you are putting your PVC together, especially on a first trial, instead of PVC glue, you can use wax from a toilet bowl ring. The wax will seal non-pressure joints nicely, and if you need to change something, rearrange it, or maintain the system, you can hit it with a hot air gun, and separate the joints easily. Thanks for a great video.

Love your site! I am working now on setting up my own system with expandable rain barrel array, multiple collection points, and relocatable areas for the 4" pipes. Of course, in the case of drought I have a well and community water backup... Question: Once this system is built and established, do you have a suggestion for plugs for the net-cup holes in the top of the PVC pipe when they are not being used? I am thinking of something along the lines of a curved piece of plastic with "holders" to put over the holes to keep dirt and bugs out. Might want to try some actual 3" pvc plugs. Any thoughts or has anyone addressed this?

@randypuaatuua8104
@randypuaatuua8104 7 жыл бұрын
the bag is made of woven plastic material - it breathes and excess water will leak out. the gutter will naturally overflow, I'm sure you'd also want to be careful about where you place the pipe, not in an area with poor drainage or prone to flooding in light rains.

Thank you. the overflow water may takes away the manure and other fertilizers from the soil. Also I could find from the video that they are using plastic buckets without holes other than net cup. does it not stopping the Breathability and excess rain water flow?

One thing that could have been done different (a little more expensive, unfortunately): A second sheet of plastic like the one you put over the pipe laid underneath the pipe would keep soil out no matter when the holes are drilled, as well as keep wet soil, or dirty water, from seeping between the top sheet and the pipe and into the holes. I noticed that without that lower sheet, there were dark spots creeping toward the holes in the pipe under the top sheet in your video. Very thought-provoking, thank you. I'll be watching more of your videos in the future to add more great ideas to my gardening schemes.

You can make a jig, a saddle out of 2x4s a "U" shape drill your hole in the center & the hole in the wood will guide the cutter as it goes into the pipe, even if you dill the pipe in reverse.
