I did this with both a kiddie pool and a 3X6' rectangle to grow peppers. They looked good and had way more peppers than I ever needed. Everything from paprika to jalapenos, Tabasco, and bell peppers. This system really WORKS! Thanks.

This has me wanting to put these things all over the place. This is the cleverest yet simplest idea ever. Using it for corn is great because of corn wanting plenty of water especially when tasseling, setting ears and growing plump juicy corn. In a partial shade area for growing lettuces, another winner! You're only limited by your own imagination. Great stuff Larry, keep it coming. lol

Larry, I just wanted to say thanks for the idea of the grow bag watering system. I brought some reusable shopping bags and instead of putting them in a pool I used 2 old totes that held 3 bags each. I put 1 tomato plant in each bag and set them on my porch. I had some nails already along the top of the porch from Christmas lights or something and tied a string for each of the plants from the nails and drilled holes on the sides of the totes and tied them in there and wrapped the tops of the plants as they grew.They grew to the top of the 8' porch I am very happy with this method and the results. The only problems I had were with blossom end rot. I lost a lot of my tomatoes about the size of a golf ball because of it. I made a slurry of lime which seemed to help. It's now the first of October and the plants are still thriving.

For mosquito control, instead of gravel, go to the pet shop and get 2 or 3 feeder goldfish for each pool, a lot cheaper. They will eat the larvae and the algae. Minnows or Guppies also work.
@larrylhall
@larrylhall 9 жыл бұрын
Then you have algae growth! Pea rock is dirt cheap 40 pound bag is only $2.49 you will only need 1 or maybe 2 and it will look much better!

Larry, I live in the California desert where it never rains. The heat here kills a lot of the bucket plants because they need more water due to the sun and heat. Now I know that we can fill the water and keep it at 2 1/2 inches in the pool, but do you still have to water the plant on top also? And if yes how much and how many times living in the desert? Or is the water in the pool enough?
@TheRebelmanone
@TheRebelmanone 8 жыл бұрын
I like the ideals thank you. I seen the video and i like your information, i noticed you using an extra container for the float. Just an ideal if you want to make that pool look more uniform with plants take that float out of the pool so you can use that space for one more bag. But since you still need a float no problem, just use a container like the one you have for your float now, but do not drill the holes in the bottom. Instead drill one hole for the input(the hole for the float and input water), and only one hole for the output, connect the output of the float box to a hole in the side of the pool using a closed nipple, it can be huge too, like a 2 to 3 inch dia. closed nipple connecting the float box to the pool. this way you can still monitor and input water automatically at the same time use every last bit of the pool and making it look more symmetrical. Now when the float calls for water it open the input valve, and the water comes in the float box and out the output hole and begins to fill the pool, until the pool level is level with your float apparatus it will stop inputting water. It will be just outside the pool connected to the side at the height you need. can even then be covered with plastic and woodbark, etc...

@horseblinderson4747

I would go with pea gravel or sand, at least where I am, as the wood chips start breaking down they'd put heat into the system. Wood chips will also grow algae and moss.

Larry, Watching your videos I got several great ideas & I want to thank you for posting them. They have solved a dilemma I had for redoing my backyard with all these systems you've posted. I live in Los Angeles Cnty CA. and water is a resource that's taken for granted by the majority of it's residents.Right now I use grey water for my lawn (so far so good). I'm curious if grey water works for the vegetable systems you've posted. Several online articles contradict each other so I'm wondering if this is something you or your readers have experience in? Thanks again Larry for your posts/videos and sharing these amazing systems!

@horseblinderson4747
@horseblinderson4747 5 жыл бұрын
Depending on what you grow allot of stuff can be "topped" and that keeps them from going leggy in the first place, but also increases the yield typically double to triple over not doing so. So pepper plant say jalapeno, 12-20 per plant typical in pots if you're lucky. Topped 24-40~ Topped and grow bag 50+~ off of a stoudter healthier plant with a longer season. You'll want natural fiber bags as they'll evaporatively cool lowering your soil temperature a good 10-15 degrees. Places like Florida that does wonders the biggest problem people have with growing is temperature.

I built the RGGS however my question is this. Since the containers are always wicking up from the bottom will I get rot in the bottom of the container?

You shouldn't because you have all that air as well.

So what if you put small pebbles or gravel in the pool around the bags above the water level.... would that solve the mosquito problem...?

Larry, do you place the grow bags right on top of the rock,or do you bury the grow bags a few inches into the rocks?

The rock will also add solar mass giving you a jump on the growing season. I bought some black lava rock to add to my kiddie pool setup. However, I didn't add it because I have seen conflicting information on whether the black lava rock is toxic. I also considered using sand as well.

***** I bought the Lowe's stocked item for the black lava rock so I am not sure what its composition is. You bring up a good point about the holes. I've seen this on the lava rock I laid down at my rental property.

I'm very crafty and a sewing enthusiast I was going to sew my own grow bags from burlap this year. I've read that the color red helps tomato fruits to develope and ripen quicker. Then the idea of RED burlap grow bags struck. Do you or any of your followers have any experience with using the color red and tomato production?

You might also try using some red "rip-stop nylon", Joann has it as well as lots of online retailers. You could lay the red over the horizontal top of the grow bag, cutting a hole or slit for the stem; it is typically breathable. I think the red color only influences the fruit and leaves response, not the roots. You can google "red mulch", which is really just a plastic red sheeting, often used with Earthboxes; you can do an "image search" for quick ideas.
