In 1984 Metallica were 6 months in Denmark recording "Ride the lightning" and "Master of puppets" at Sweet Silence Studios located on the Island of Amager that partly are part of Copenhagen. That were there they began their long connection with Flemming Rasmussen. A months ago Lars Ulrich were in a 45 minute long Danish TV (Go´morgen Danmark TV2) show that are very watch worthy. Flemming came in for a short visit there as well.

He did. And Kirk got lessons from Satriani to up his game during RTL and MOP. And it was a great decision. You can always get better, no matter how good you think you are. When you think you have it all figured out, everything you do starts to sound the same and stale. You have to keep learning and growing and it will show through in what you create and how you approach life in general.

Early Metallica was the best Metallica. Their songs progressed into classical masterpieces that melted your face off. Black album made them accessible and palatable to more people than ever but something was lost. After that was not very good until St. Anger when they seemed to get their balls back and so with death magnetic and the newest one. Still though Metallica never did get back that explosive tear it to the ground groove again. Still i love them throughout everything and they are part of the big 4 for the heaviest thrashers ever!!!!

@@mikesomersdrummer8042 i don't know about natural feel, as those albums are certainly spliced up and revised many times to get the final result. i think he plays great in them, and i think his composing ability in those albums as well as how they were played/executed is just about perfect, but i think if lars had natural feel, he would be able to keep up those dynamics live, which unfortunately he doesn't often do. i don't know, it's kind of a complicated topic when trying to gauge exactly the nature of lars' abilities. i do agree though on loving the drums of Load and Reload, which is maybe an unpopular opinion, i don't know, but i think those albums have some of his most colorful/expressive drumming that just feels so smooth and lively and at home

I think its common with self taught drummers. They muight play a groove at one speed but when it comes to fills it might be too fast or too slow and it doesn't sound seemless. I was guilty of that myself until i listened back to what it sounded like and was surprised at how gast my fills were compared to my grooves.

Kind of funny how musicians and their talent level work out. Metallica have grown in playing and writing skills throughout their entire lives, as Flemming said. Yet, their best and most memorable art is from when they were still young and growing. Not to say their newer stuff is bad, it's not bad. But their prime era was just so next level.

@@sadsadasdsadasdsadas I sure don't, but OK. Maybe you have issues with your knowledge of music theory and native English? My comment is based on assuming the idea that jazz training would make someone a worse metal drummer (which it wouldn't). Additionally, anyone that plays drums would be acutely aware of the fact that Lars does not have any degree of jazz pedigree or training. In short, he just isn't a particularly skilled drummer: his rudiments are almost non existent, he has no chops, and he has gotten worse at drumming due to extremely poor technical hygiene in his playing. The producer wouldn't have had to teach him in the first place if he had jazz training... These points obviously flew very far above your head.

@anonymouse527 totally. It is just like comped solos. People have been doing it for years..decades before digital recording. Take the best parts from multiple takes...and then learn it before you have to play it live. Same thing applies to songs in general. You could have a series of what could be described as tricks..but when arranged properly, you can have a song. I figure that is largely what Justice was. 'Is riff #122 in E? Okay, good...we will use it as the verse in this song'.

I saw Metallica's first gig at a place called Radio City in Anaheim on March 14th, 1982. It was my 18th birthday. They had a hard time convincing the owner that Lars was over 18. He looked all of 12.
