The ultimate archery trick. Proving that Hollywood archery is not historical.
It is not possible to tell the whole story about archery in a 5 minute video.
so this video is definitely not the whole truth!
Historic archery is a lot of different methods and much is forgotten
but archery can be much more than we usually think!
THE BACK QUIVER
Hollywood of course did not invent the back quiver, but they spread the myth it was proper archery!
Many asked why I do not use a back quiver and that is why I am showing my own experience, how bad it is in motion.
There are many different historical variatoner of back quiver and they have of course been used, but presumably belt quiver was more common and some archers did not use quiver.
HISTORIC ARCHERS HAD THE ARROWS RIGHT AROUND THE BOW
Af course not all not all. Someone had the arrow left around the bow, but many historical archers had the arrow right around, also archers in Europe
TARGET PLATES
Past archers obvious used fixed targets, but not the modern round divided two dimensional.
THE THREE LEVELS OF ARROW HANDLING
It is obvious much more complicated, We can not know what the first archers did, some of the earliest pictures show arrows in the bow hand, but the arrow is much older than the bow so the quiver may be used and it is impossible entirely exclude that the first archer held his shafts in the draw hand.
In some parts of history is progress gone in the 3 levels, but other times the opposite has happened. Some archers are gone from arrows in the draw hand to the advanced rapid fire quiver that was developed just before war archery disappeared.
TRICK ARCHERY IS HISTORICAL ARCHERY
Training tricks was an integral part of several historical traditions
HISTORIC ARCHERS SHOT FAST
There are a lot of historical descriptions of archers that shoot fast
and that archers were rejected because you were not fast enough.
DO I HIT EVERYHING?
I use a LOT of time practicing, and every time I set out to learn a new skill, a new trick or how to handle a new type of bow or arrow, it takes a long time, with plenty of misses. When I got the idea of grabbing an arrow in flight and firing before I landed, it took me months to learn. For a long time, arrows flew everywhere!
But there's no trick in the video that I haven't done many times (except for splitting the arrow in flight - after I'd done that once I finished the video). The one with hitting the blade I've only done three times, though. All that running hurt my knees. ;-)
ON MY BOWS AND POWER
I'm 50 years old, and have been doing archery for only ten years. I'll never be able to shoot really fast with 100 lbs+ war bows. I tried, but it just produced injuries. Had I started at age 10, it would have been a different story. ;-)
Bows were not always shoot against plate armour (as at Crecy in 1346 and Agincourt in 1415). This was very much the exception. Many opponents had little or no armour at all, and Stone Age findings show that many animals were taken down by multiple shots. Also, in 1923 Saxton T Pope examined a number of historical museum bows from around the world. His conclusion was that most only had a tensile strength of 45-50 pounds.
The fast shooting methods I use are described in war manuals and are intended to be performed with war bows
THE CHAINMAIL TEST
Around 04:22 I penetrate chainmail. The arrows had bodkin tips, and the chainmail is riveted. However, while the gambeson is thick, it's not as thick as some I've seen elsewhere. But one reason the arrows penetrate is that I sharpen not only the tip itself, but also the edges of the bodkin tip.
HIT AN INCOMING ARROW!
You don't have time to aim or think, but can only do it if your reactions are completely instinctive. First of all, you need to be convinced that you WILL hit it, so you can “feel” the incoming arrow and fire at it instead of just flinching away.
I was also in doubt whether it was smart to show this, because I don't want anyone to get hurt trying to copy the trick. I trained for years with soft boffer arrows and spent a LONG time before I tried it even the first time. And the arrow shoot at me was not shoot with a very powerful bow, though it was definitely dangerous enough!
I didn't think it was possible to split an arrow!
It was a light bamboo arrow with a metal tip, and the arrow I shot back was a heavier aluminum arrow. That the arrow split was just pure luck, and I'm not certain I could repeat it without first training for a long time.
FINAL WORDS
Thank you for watching my videos and for reading.
I will remove rude and dumb comments.
I will also remove dumb “archery experts” comments.

Joshua Gold The only fallacy to his method is an improper release (fingers rather thumb) for nocking on the right side of the bow, this becomes more important with higher draw weight bows; otherwise the whole idea has a fair bit of validity. And ya, once you personally reach 3 arrows in 1.5 sec., everything else just seems... comically slow.

Mildo Dildew I think I demonstrate a better method. I can use my technique with any draw weight, with a proper release for paradox (3 finger included), no modified nocks, and anyone can pick it up. I show people how to do my technique on my channel. I've achieved 3 arrows in 1.18 sec with 4 months of training. He doesn't have an ability no one else on the planet has, like he said-he's likely the first Archer to DO it in modern time. Before today's time, we can reference Saxton Pope, who learned from Ishi, last of the Yashi Indians.

I used to make bows as a kid, very basic stuff of course, I shot them too with the arrow on the right side of the bow holding the bow with my left hand, no one thought me to do this, it was a natural way. I also held the arrows the same way as the Comanches did, also because no one thought me the ''correct way''. Unfortunately, later one doing research I was convinced that what I had been doing was all wrong, and now I have to start all over trying to learn the ways I shot as a kid I used to hunt small prey in the woods, arrow heads where teaspoons that I flattened, my mom was not so happy over the continues disappearance of her teaspoons. For hunting fish from below the pier, I used arrow points made of forks. And I managed to place one of them in the arm of my nephew, but that is another story.

There's nothing really incorrect about it. Its just suboptimal if your goal is to shoot as rapidly as possible. Its not like historically the bow was never placed on the left side. Placing the arrow on the left side by the way also gives you the benefit that you can hold the bow horizontally and the arrow wont fall of, you cant really do this when you place the arrow on the right hand side. Its also true that if you want to aim accurately on long distances, putting the arrow on the left allows you to use a sight or scope of some sort. So yeah, there surely is some truth to this video but I think they're also being a bit too quick with their judgements about what archers in the past did and did not do. There's a reason why Lars is a controversial figure in the archery and ancient weaponry communities. That being said, his skill with the bow is outstanding.
@MaxCroat
@MaxCroat Ай бұрын
@@smilloww2095 To be honest, if the claim that some archers were required to be able to shoot 3 arrows in 1.5 seconds is true, there is no way I can see that happening if they were placing the arrow on the "inside". As was explained in this video, it requires several movements more than placing the arrow on the "outside". Also, as far as using sights and scopes, yeah those didn't really exist thousands of years ago. Now, I'm not claiming to know what archers in the past did or didn't do, but I am fairly certain that professional militaries were fairly rare, almost non-existant for most of history, so I doubt that most archers could achieve this level of skill shown in the video. They were also in large formations where they could have a large volume of fire without each individual having to fire rapidly. They only really needed to be able to shoot somewhat straight.
@smilloww2095
@smilloww2095 Ай бұрын
@@MaxCroat I have high doubts that that claim is true. It can only be done with low draw weight bows or by not drawing a high draw weight bow more than a few inches, probably no more than 2. Which really isnt gonna be great to kill or severely injure people with. Historical bows had immense draw weights. 150lbs and more. And while you dont have a sight, shooting accurately even without a sight is still far less akward with the arrow on the left. As far as I can tell this video is to be taken with a grain of salt
@MaxCroat
@MaxCroat Ай бұрын
@@smilloww2095 That is definitely all true, but while I don't know myself whether the claim is true or not, it could be true that they were required to shoot this fast in training. Obviously being in battle and shooting with a strong bow would be slower and nobody would be timing you anyways.

While Lars has some critics, and some of their criticism is valid, there is no denying he is one of the most versatile and accurate archers in the world, and most likely the fastest. The thing I like about his videos is that he's actually willing to try this crazy stuff... and finds out it's not so crazy after all. While I have no doubt in my mind that he contains the Mutant Gene and belongs in the X-Men... I have to admit his numerous techniques for shooting are well worth examination. A fictional super hero that mainly use a bow could do way more.

There are so many false assumptions about "the proper way to do things" based on nothing more than received wisdom. This principle applies to many fields I'm sure. When I learned bushcraft, it reminded me of this videos I saw a few years prior. My instructor, a cossack, showed us this, explaning they did like mongols : holding a bundle of arrows in their hand and shooting instinctively in succession while on horseback. He didn't have to consciously aim, he trained his eyes and movements to automatically aim when banding the bow, just like a baseball bater hits without really seeing the ball arriving too fast.

conserving arrows for what? he used the arrow as it is intended to be. plus the lesser the enemy is the greater your advantage is so taking em out quickly and lowering their morale is plausible. plus archers dont move alone ffs. archers only have a timeframe to rain arrows upon their enemy after entering their effective range before they meet with swords- else they risk friendly fire. i bet that criticism is definitely from a archer "expert". i myself admit that i dont know much about archery itself but i do know common sense and a little bit about how war was performed on the olden days and could still see the flaw with that criticism.

What if the enemy is using shields? Or are clever enough to stand more than a few, close meters away from your position? Or if, you miss? i cant imagine the draw weight of that bow beeing that high, making it pretty useless in a wartime setting, where soldiers would be armored with plate, laminated armor or whatever, realistically it seems pointless, there is a reason why forexample the brittish used longbows with like 150-200 pounds draw weight, its so the arrows could actually do something if they hit. this is a pointless way of shooting a bow sience it would be so fantastically disreguarded in a wartime setting. the 1 type of people who could use this, was criminals killing civilians during robberys or something.

A couple historical inaccuracies. Back quivers, standing still while shooting and shooting from the right side of the bow all do not stem from Hollywood, but rather from artillery archery formations who were overdrawing power bows for mass barrage waves. Otherwise this is the coolest feats of archery I've ever seen, and that arrow catching and deflecting put Myth Busters to shame.
@MilesTraveler
@MilesTraveler 9 жыл бұрын
They are two styles of shooting with two purposes. Neither is superior. We just focus on the style used for slow precise hunting at range and artillery shooting these days. Probably because it carried more practical value in the long run for war and gathering food, until guns replaced the bow entirely.

I've been interested in Archery for 5 years. And mildly for my entire life. I built my first bow 4 years ago. I didn't get a real one until only two years ago. I've studied war manuals and watched thousands of Videos and dozens of books on the topic. What he is doing isn't revolutionary, lots of people use that side of the bow and hold arrows in hand, it's called Hun/Mongolian/Etc archery. It was very powerful for small encounters and horseback. But ultimately as the medieval world evolved to mostly include siege and large military encounters they switched to a style of archery easier to teach in mass for effective war use. Load up arrow onto a a bow with a massive draw weight, draw back beyond your own ear, release for long flight barrage. This started long before guns took over Europe. Many battles between the French and English proved the power of artillery archery, as Crossbows lost due to inferior fire rate and power efficiency against English archers. I've practiced both ways over two years with my longbow. Both are awesome and serve a purpose, but it's foolish to act like Legolas shooting is superior period, a master at pistol shooting may beat somebody in close range with an AR swung over their shoulder. But the second you are firing from bunkers there is a reason they aren't jumping off walls speed shooting pistols. Not that I do not admire his skill, it's far more than I will have even ten years from now, because my primary focus is on writing and melee martial arts, I don't have his dedication to archery alone. As for "Brony" I simply enjoyed the show and did some art for it, primarily I'm interested in cartoons and novels period, but Ponies are far easier to draw than humans and I am a tad lazy when it comes to art. I am not sure how this is relevant to the topic or video at hand. Good day sir

@@CircumcisionIsChildAbuse Compete? Compete in what? Are you that stupid? He admitted that he made several attempts before getting it, of course he editted out his fails, but that is what practice means. I understand that splitting an incoming arrow after 100 attempts may not be that impressive, but still, it's the determination and effort that we applaud to. It is true that other archers reacted to it, but the main issue is that their reason is that unlike them Lars can afford renting buildings etc to perform such tricks, and that in modern days nobody really needs to be able do these tricks anyway, that was the main point of other archer youtubers, they didn't really discredit him, nor his historical claims, like shooting the arrow from the right side was indeed a thing and so on, they admitted that he is skilled, but added that his skill is kinda irrelivant in our days

You and your band of 15 cavalry knights and 7 archers are invading a small town at midnight. You feel and arrow whizz past your head and your comrade screaming. As you turn 2 more are shot in the blink of an eye. “THEYRE IN THE COTTAGE ON THE RIGHT” one of your men say in their dying breath. By this point the archers in the back are ready with their bows, and they all fire. Straight ahead into the darkness, not seeing the archer but firing through an open window. Everyone stops, in anticipation to hear whether or not the ambusher was still alive or dead. “Must’ve blown out his throat, there’s not noise” As head of the cavalry you approach the door of the house, and are shot in the throat when you open it. Your squad all moves in, expected to be shielded by the chainmail armor, but one by one are penetrated by arrows as you go through the door. “THE DOOR IS BOTTLENECKING US, SURROUND THE BUILDING! ARCHERS STAND AT THE WINDOWS! WELL AVENGE THE CAPTAIN” says one of your comrades as you’re fading out of consciousness. Even with the number advantage none of the archers could get a clear shot on their unseen opponent. They thought by surrounding the house they were trapping their target, but in reality they were splitting their forces and being taken out one by one before they could even realize. The archers were all killed before the cavalry could shield them, but finally they catch a glimpse of this archer. They aren’t a muscular man, quite skinny actually, but they were fast and their bow accuracy has already been proven. There are only about 8 knights left, who left their horses behind so they could enter the building. “WELL SMOKE OUT THE HOUSE, HE CANT ESCAPE THA-“ Before the knight finished he was shot in the stomach. 7 knights left. 2 more shots from the darkness of the house. Another knight down. 6 left. By this time the knights confidence was low. The archer had taken out almost 20 people singlehandedly and there are no signs of him coming close to running out of arrows. They no longer even had enough knights to surround the building effectively. 2 of the knights, on the side of the house with the windows, started running in a straight line as far away as possible. “AGH” “OUFFF” They were both shot in the back. 4 knights left. With the numbers advantage quickly dwindling, and the skill of the archer proving to be higher than all of the cavalry or archers, all 4 of them decide it’s either the archer or them to survive, and all break in through the door, throwing a large rock through and trying to hide behind it and other objects in the house for cover. It was no use, they were all shot, one by one, and there was only one knight left. The knight, knowing he could not win, asked this: “What is your name, so I shall take it into the afterlife with me?” “Lars.”

@florentloki 5 жыл бұрын
@Tahka DM possible but to catch it, you don't just squeze it, you push it in a perpendicular direction to the path of the arrow, so it direct a lot of energy away, and an arrow is not really heavy but only squesing can hurt, as for the difficulty to catch, well if you see the arrow comming that can be done if its far like 50m minimum, even more and it can be done but if not can be dangerous, also key point is to get used to the speed of the arrow, done it by time because it was fun and risky but you take some time before trying and you lower thd power of the bow after the first arrow you see comming in a target 2 metters aways from you. and yes with a powerfull bow, not possible before 50m, or at least need a lot of training.

When I was about 11 years old I made my own bow from a branch of hazelnut tree and sneaker laces. While it didn't shoot more than 60 metres it was hella fun as a kid :D. I had no practical knowledge of archery back then, just decided to imitate this awesome weapon that i've seen used in movies and games. I just assumed back then that it's logical to shoot the arrow from the right side seeing as it's the fastest and most convienient way. Glad to see that I haven't been completely wrong. I bought a proper bow a couple years back and have been practicing in the "proper" way, and while it's more consistent and accurate, It is in fact much slower. Props to the guy for doing what he does.
