The Larsens Opening looks to get the dark square bishop involved into the game very early and dominate the long dark square diagonal. While this isn't played often, it gives white many great opportunities and many times black is not prepared for such an opening.

Interesting opening and a fluent explaination.I just tried it out and won the locked-in-bishop on move seven. The rest of the game I stood better the whole time. Greetings from Belgium, rating: 1520.

I really like this opening. I played the Italian game for a while and was looking for something new. Not only is the Larsens rarely prepared for, but a lot of times you end up going into an Italian-like game anyway, with the advantage of having your dark bishop aiming down on the kings side. If you ever want to go more in depth on the Larsens, I'd definitely look forward to studying it.

Dylan Gardner Hei, I play with this opening a lot and is my go to in plus 5 or 2 second games. Usually b2, Bb3, e3, then almost always Nf3 but been checking out vids and the internet and found out f4 is often better. Any-ways, if you like this opening. I highly recommend you look into Nimzo-Larson Attack. Almost identical except 1.Nf3 then 2.b3 with of course the same thematic 4.e3. Greetings from Finland.

Almost every time I play this opening and play ...Nc6; Bb5 the next move is almost always ...a7. Because I'm not that concerned with the light squared bishop I usually play Bxc6. Gives up the bishop but cuts off the only defender of e5. There's probably a better response to this, but I haven't found it.

One of my favorite openings to play with beginners who are generally only familiar with e4 and d4 openings, it really confuses them initially, and then when I start aggressively bringing out my minor pieces, they're totally unsure what to do.

at 4:58, if white bishop captures on F7, black queen can check on H4. If white blocks with the G pawn, black can capture with the passed pawn, leading to discovered check, capturing rook and promotion if the white bishop captures the black rook. Otherwise after queen H4 check, the white king must move, and both black bishops can quickly become active in that area, as well as the passed pawn being already there, with checkmate potential.

Actually it's a financhetto when there is one pawn left, one right and one directly in front of the bishop, afaik. So if you move g4 or b4 and put the bishop there, I don't think it's called financhetto.

I| Cr3Ek |I if a6 instead of Bd6? You take the knight and after bxBc6 take the e5 pawn with your bishop. If Bd6, then white plays f4, then a6, still take the knight and proceed as normal after bxBc6. as white, we do not really care about our light squared bishop as it’s main role is to take out defenders of the e5 pawn. Obviously there are other moves so do not follow me religiously, but I am a 1400 playing this opening and I find this works best

So the knight is pinned down, and cant move because of the white bishop on b5, but what is stopping black from moving a7 pawn in front of the rook to a8, he moves forward and threatening the bishop, why would he want to do anything else? then the plan fails and you have to back track the bishop correct?
