I’m usually with Josh on these, but the only reason to choose spaghetti is convenience. Lasagna has a diversity of textures! Not to mention that it’s great for meal prepping. Lasagna leftovers are INFINITELY better than soggy next-day spaghetti!

As much as I love lasagna, spaghetti wins in general for one thing: portion control. You have total control of the noodle to sauce/topping ratio. Living alone also makes boiling noodles and combining it with a sauce just easier/faster to do (as much as that is a knock for Dulcé). I make a mean spaghetti carbonara that only takes about 15 minutes. Though, I did just discover an Instagram video about making personal lasagnas in small bread loaf tins that might change the game entirely.

You guys!!! You’re killing this Italian over here! Italian Americans call red sauce gravy. You’ve never heard anyone from Jersey say Sunday gravy?? 🤦‍♀️ I’ve never left this many comments on a single video, but my head is exploding! 🤯 😂

I think that's a regional thing - New Jersey, New York. I believe they say it in Ohio too. In Boston and most places I've visited, red sauce is sauce, and gravy goes on turkey and mashed potatoes.

In China and Korea you can buy ramen that is meant to be eaten dry. They are pre-seasoned and shaped much smaller. Its like a bag of chip, but ramen. I have found memories of eating dried ramen because i'd buy a pack after school whenever I had pocket money. It was a pretty big deal at the time because these ramen came with collectible cards inside. Also, it came in a regular brick that you crush and season yourself. Dried snack ramen is cruchier than the average ramen.

As a latina I have a different opinion on the "poor man food" thing. I'm from Peru and if you check out Peruvian cuisine, one of the BEST in the world, you're gonna find a lot of different pasta dishes... but no lasagna. Spaghetti is versatile, not because it can be green, white or red, but because each different household, country, culture can and has taken it as it's own... cause it's affordable and easy to make as a base so then you can go all out on sauce and toppings. I remember sitting at the dinner table chopping and separating leafs, my mom blending or boiling or pounding ingredients... the level of difficulty could go up or down but it was always delicious at the end. And it can be considered expensive too... I come from a big family, my mom had to feed 6 kids, 2 of them with a bottomless pit for a tummy (my dad was worse back then XD) so pasta was a treat we couldn't afford often, and the most difficult recipes were mostly for birthdays. Instead. Lasagna requires having an oven, having the money to use that amount of gas or electricity and all those different cheeses... cause your spaghetti can but doesn't NEED cheese, Lasagna does, so it's the kind of meal you buy at a restaurant or a family member makes for a "serious" celebration... and it's always a very much classic recipe, no changes. Is it delicious? Yes, but in the end spaghetti wins.

So, it seems like comparing lasagna to spaghetti is like comparing apples to oranges. The only thing they have in common is that they're pasta. Anything you can do to spaghetti as far as sauce, you can also do with lasagna. The biggest difference is that spaghetti is cooked fully on to the stove and lasagna is cooked on the stove, then it's baked. Spaghetti is supposed to be eaten right away, and lasagna is literally a pasta casserole, something you can take to a potluck. I'm going to have to agree that Dulce is right: pasta is wet bread. However, dumplings are also wet bread, if your definition of bread is flour and egg. I've made spaghetti and lasagna and every time I make it from scratch. My kids wouldn't eat canned spaghetti sauce. Fresh tomatoes, fresh garlic cloves, celery, onion, garden oregano, marjoram, cilantro, thyme...everything from scratch. The only difference between them is the type of noodle. :P

Food history scholar here: sorry Dulce, the potato is a new world plant, too. It also didn’t exist in Europe until the white boys got adventurous. It originated in South America. There were plenty of other root vegetables and tubers in Europe and Africa before that: rutabagas, yams, and the like. You’re right, though: most food in the world was indeed made by impoverished peasants.
