My Gramma used to take the little bits and pieces of bar soap that were always left over, stuck them in an old dutch oven, set on a shelf in the basement. Then she would add water. Add soap slivers, add water, add soap slivers, add water... until she had enough soap juice to fill up an empty palmolive bottle to put in the shower. Gramma was into recycling before recycling was cool.

What I do is I get it really small and then I put it in the center of my sapo sponge and get it extra sudsy and then that's just a single wash all over. I'd worry about adding water and diluting the concentration of the soap.

I'm a 66 year old African-American woman who has always been a bar soap kind of gal. Use Ivory for hand washing and various hippie bar soaps for my face and body. Younger women have asked my skin care secret. It's soap and water, aloe vera gel and lotion. Maybe I'm just blessed.

You are blessed 😊but you are an AA woman so your higher level of melanin usually provides more protection from sun damage, a factor of aging. You said you use "hippie" soaps on your face/body...I will assume that means those soaps are higher quality (quality matters). And the most important factor imo...you follow your bar washing with aloe vera and lotion. Moisturization IS key.

I was raised with Dr Bronner's liquid peppermint soap as our only bath soap at both my parents' houses the 80's and 90's. It's full of peppermint essential oil so getting out of the tub your skin always felt super clean and fresh. Other than that we had Lava brand bar soap next to the laundry room sink for scrubbing really nasty stuff off hands and Dial bar soap for regular hand washing. My grandparents on both sides only used bar soap. Grandma Florrie would replace any soap bar in her house when there was about 1/4 left, she said it made her feel better to see a bigger bar of soap, the small bars reminded her of when they were so poor they could not afford soap. She saved the leftover chunks in tupperware sorted by color and made decorative soaps out of them for when she had guests.

Ahhhh...Lava soap. What memories....People over the years have asked me what I use on my face to have such beautiful skin. The first few times this happened I just looked at them stumped. Because I have very sensitive skin I told them water is what I use. I then got to thinking, no, I also use Lava soap on my face periodically when I shower. Lava was the only soap I could use that didn't make my face break out with all kinds of bazaar blotches. I'm talking about the "original" bar of Lava soap. Unfortunately, the ingredients have been changed. I guess to try and make it look more appealing to boost sales. I can no longer use it without the return of blotches. Hey, anybody out there know where I can find the original lava colored bar, not of the green bar????

As a soapmaker I really loved this conversation. The bars and the bodywashes that are sold in stores are (usually) NOt real soap products btw. they are mostly a mix of synthetic detergents, fragrances and other natural or synthetic additives. I make my own soap (liquid and bar) an it is really fun to do, observing the chemical proccesses is very interesting (for me at least). I also make other (cosmetic) products and my own household soaps and cleaning products. 🙂 That way I know what goes in them and I can adjust them according to what my skin needs. When I don't feel like making stuff myself or when I am in pain from fibro and other painfull medical issues I have I tend to indulge on lush products, not all "natural" but they're my guilty pleasure(s) 🙂 Also, when soap is made rigth there shouldn't be ANY lye left in it.

Those plasticky ones with the loop? Throw them in the wash once a week with a regular load and they’ll last a long time. I’ve been using the same one for 3 years and it’s still going strong. Of course, I hang it up to dry the rest of the time.

Some places let you refill your bottle with bulk soap. The biggest cause of pollution are cars (driving and manufacturing). So anyone with a car can't complain about the environment. Soap got its name from an ancient Roman legend about Mount Sapo. Rain would wash down the mountain mixing with animal fat and ashes, resulting in a clay mixture found to make cleaning easier. By the 7th century, soap-making was an established art in Italy, Spain and France.

As a bar user I can adress a couple things I heard here. 1. Bar on the body is okay IF, you simply wash off a full layer of the bar all around, it simply washes off. 2. As for the bar daggers or slivers. Instead of saving them, when you get a new bar, wet the top of the new bar and the bottom of the sliver then mash them together.

Bar soap much friendlier to environment and lasts forever. Team bar soap and washcloth! Body wash is detergent. Shampoo is detergent, which comes from petroleum products. Read ingredients: same thing, but different amts and different fragrances. And detergent is great for hair on all parts of your body. I think that's why there were lemon juice rinses, vinegar rinses, etc.: To get rid of that sticky soap film on hair.

Both soaps are made with lye. Bar of soap is made with Sodium Hydroxide & liquid soap is made with Potassium hydroxide. Also, If you make your own soap you can control the super fat percentage. A higher super fat will have moisturizing properties.

Yes! I used to make my own soap. Superfatted soap is the best. My aunt used to say my soap made her face feel like a baby's bottom. Another woman with severe eczema said that my soap was the only one she could use. It's very gentle, and the glycerine is not skimmed off like the industrial bars. Zum Bar is the only soap I have found that was similar to my soap. So, bar soap for me. I use a washcloth or bath brush. I keep the soap dry after rinsing it off. No plastic packaging! I don't even moisturize after using it!

I'm on Dulce's side on this one all the way! Body wash and face wash are the best for your skin and easy to use. You don't have to worry about soap sludge to clean out of the soap dish. It lasts longer. You can travel with it. So many benefits to body wash.

Oh man, they have these soap savers that I use for my bar soap! It allows air to circulate under the soap, and no more sludge! It's amazing and lasts for a super long time, and the bar lasts longer! Now for travel, SOMETIMES I'll buy a body wash, but usually I just pack a bar in a travel dish!

I was a firm believer in bar soap my entire life. I grew up with Dial. My favorites as an adult were expensive French lemon scented bars. But then . . . I discovered the body wash pump. I’ve never looked back. When I had been first introduced to body wash, they were in squeeze containers you needed to lift and squeeze from the top - each time. I would have to lift them multiple times for each shower - I hated the process. But then - life became wonderful with pump dispensers. I now have a beautiful bathroom with a shower insert with a modern stainless steel dispenser for shampoo, conditioner and body wash. I am never going back. Your episode brought joy to my life.

Such an important topic! I'm team bar soap . I use two wash cloths - one for face, and one for body. I think it's gross when people rub the soap directly on their bodies with no cloth (bar or body wash). I'm okay with rinsing the soap off before and after I use it.

I must disagree about how long body wash has been around. I have been using body wash or shower gel sense the late 1980's when I was in college. I did start with bars of soap but found that they left a film on my skin and left my skin tight and dry. So I am team body wash.

While I tend to agree that body wash is more sanitary, I don't share my soap with many people so I go bar soap for another reason - less waste! It's just wrapped in a bit of paper rather than a giant plastic bottle that probably won't get recycled. It's cheaper to ship bar soap than body wash, and bars doesn't use a non-renewable resource (oil in the plastic).

The seriousness with which these 2 make their arguments is stunning to behold! I’m 💯 team body wash, bar soap is nasty if it’s being shared. However. The downside to body wash is needing some kind of applicator (“floof”?!), and you don’t want to travel with those when they’re wet. So you need a clean washcloth at your destination that you leave behind afterwards. Not everyone wants to do that. But there’s my 2 cents!

Thank you for the perfect study break! This is making me miss my dearly departed mother-in-law. I could never convince her to leave bar soap. She just couldn’t understand how to use the pouf. I always made sure to have Ivory soap and wash cloths when she visited. I am pro body wash, but it is worse for the environment. How do y’all feel about scrubbies vs wash rags in the kitchen? And Gladware vs covering a plate with aluminum foil? Just a thought for future content.

I use both wash rags and scrubbies in the kitchen. Gladware(reuseable) wins 95% of the time, only foil when it's sitting right there and I'm super tired. Can't help myself, I'm just cheap enough that I can't justify some practices. And I can't give up my bars, and antibacterial is a must for certain parts, to feel really fresh. I appreciate getting body wash as a gift, and I do use it, and the pouf, to exfoliate sometimes. I live alone so hair on the soap can only be mine or the cats.

I’m team body wash, soap bars get those cracks and fissures on top that fill up with nastiness and are always dealing with that gross gelatinous mess on the bottom from not drying properly from the last time it was used. I don’t care if you have a special dish for your soap, you know what I’m talking about.

I am going to say like in the movie "Radio" : I like both; Body Wash and Bar Soap! I hate when the liquid soap gets low, be it body wash or dishwashing liquid and the grandkids add water, which then becomes messy all over everything! And about the nasty bar soap, I alway's rinse the bar soap off⁉️ Even my own personal bar, which is the only bar soap that I will use! 😆

Love this! We don't have constructive conversations like this anymore! I'm team bar soap. My reasons: 1. It's minimal, takes up less space and easier to store 2. It's easy to travel with (castile soap for the all-in-one shampoo/body conveinence) 3. Less packaging vs. plastic body wash containers 4. I have my own bar so there's no sharing issues. 5. Usually buy gentle soap with milder ingredients and some essential oils. I do think that public places and places like hotels, spas, etc. should go with liquid body wash to reduce wasting bar soap that never gets used up. I even just use my own bar to avoid opening up a new bar soap to reduce waste
