Hi Emily, As a cutting board maker I will say that more oil (food safe mineral oil or cutting board/salad bowl specific oil product) is actually better for the board. Once you have applied enough oil for it to penetrate into the wood vs just a surface coat it helps keep water and bacteria from entering the wood pores and helps keep the wood from drying out which prevents cracking and splitting. When oiling a board use enough that some stays on top of the wood. Wait a few hours or even overnight and if the oil has soaked in, give the board another coat. Make sure to do both sides and all four edges. Eventually the board will have soaked all the oil it can take and you can remove any that remains. To help protect your board further many board makers use a mixture of bees wax and mineral oil, often referred to as "board butter" for the final silky smooth finish. As with any cutting board, the board should never be put in the dish washer or allowed to soak in water. And every month or two a new coat of oil and board butter should be reapplied. Thanks for your great videos and for sharing your knowledge...hopefully my sharing a little of my knowledge on cutting boards will be helpful to you and your other viewers.

There's NO SUCH thing as "food safe" mineral oil. ALL mineral oil is the same, really. You should use Cutting Board oil then finish with cutting board wax. Also, if you "mask" the board first (blue painters tape) where you're going to engrave. ALSO, "air assist" is important as it helps prevent FIRES from starting.

What's your opinion on using raw pure clean linseed oil instead for cutting boards? If in a hurry maybe put it in the oven at like 220F or so to dry it. This is what I do with my cast iron if I think I would use it again soon. I love the coating I get on cast iron and it might be good for a cutting board. (For anyone who doesn't know, linseed is also called flaxseed and some consider it a super food.)

1) Line interval: I think your scanning offset adjustments might be way off (going by the plastic comparison pic). Can you let me know what you're are set at currently? (found in device settings) 2) if you find you are wildly out of focus and already boned the board right from the start...just let it continue on...yeah, its ruined, but heck, it might be a great outcome wildly out of focus and semi-salvage the job...worst case scenario, you will have an even screw up :) 3) spot on with the less is more for engraving (but make sure to have at least some air coming out of course). 4) Mask it with tape for easier cleanup Your videos are fantastic. honestly, you need to be training people some advanced stuff as a side gig. Also, great wood. hard to find decent wood around town.

I appreciate your enthusiasm and tips. You mentioned "sealing" your cutting boards- what do you seal them with- you have to be careful if they are actually used for cutting. The oil should be enough and you can soak them in oil, wipe off the excess, and let it soak in to prevent cracking and warping later. what font are you using? I have a million fonts but love the one you seem to like for some of my projects. right now I use a CNC router to v-carve or straight carve stacked letters so no gluing unless I want to change wood types. I have a 60watt laser coming to add more capability. .

Cloudray sells a value that lets you decide exactly how much air you want to allow when you are engraving ( even if the air is turn off in the software) and you would normally turn off the air thru lightburn when engraving but still need a little air to keep the lens from getting fouled, also a lot of people just cut the air hose next to the laser lens and add a cheap $ 2 air value there to control the air going to the head. When I Engrave at around 500 lines per inch, I don't defocus my lens and I do not have the small lines you do. (also If I am just engraving and not cutting I use a dual lens engraving head ) a lot of times I will just windex a piece to make the lasered text more uniform and then I will sand that afterwards to keep the letters dark and still get rid of the smoke ring around the text. That just goes to show you how there are many different approaches to get a good result when lasering. Please understand that I am just sharing how I do it and I am not trying to say anything negative. I enjoyed your video a lot. thank you.

Great tips! Yes, needs time to get up to speed......and to slow down....and not crash😂 This is the one downside of my large 1300x900 machine, but worth the slower engraving speed to be able to fit 4x8’ stock😎 In Lightburn you can automatically apply defocus ( z axis) to any layer/color. I’m slowly building my cut library, so I don’t have to remember everything😎

@robxsiq7744

@@ThatMomWithALaser Now we are getting into advanced stuff (bout time :P ) To enable that, you must first go into your device settings and switch on Enable Z Axis. now you can go to your layers and adjust an offset. Really handy to defocus engraves, then refocus for cuts. I haven't used it too much (you have a lot more hours on your machine than I do. heh) but others say it works good, just remember you set it (defaults to last settings used per colored layer)
@robxsiq7744
@robxsiq7744 3 жыл бұрын
Gonna put a warning here its buggy. use with caution because it likes giving extend space errors. might be a LB mixed with ruida, not sure. testing to see what the issue is does lines fine, but fills gives issues make sure to also click relative z moves only also. seems to mess up less. still errors out on cuts

I ask this, not to be critical, but to get a better understanding. Why would the cutting side of a board be engraved? Wouldn't that make it non-utilitarian? Or is this strictly for decorative purposes, if there are people who decorate their kitchen with a cutting board? I just ordered my first cutting board blanks, and I would have thought to engrave the backside, so it could be decorative, yet still used as a cutting board. Help, anyone?

I’ve had my laser awhile now and I use it mainly for cutting foam. I’m venturing into engraving wood now and had a basic question. If you follow tips for a darker engrave then clean it, you lose the darkness you’re trying to achieve. How can you keep the darkness and still make it food safe?

Depends on the item. If it's masked then you probably don't need to clean the board but if you don't mask it then you need to wipe off the residue around the edges of the engraving. Also, depends on what your working with for sealing but I tend to seal everything lol

Okay, I have two questions :) 1. can this router out those groves that are made in your boards. (made to catch liquid) 2. By engraving you wouldn't use any tape to help remove some of the charing? Never done this, just learning.
@ddoherty5956
@ddoherty5956 2 жыл бұрын
yep, I engrave through masking tape the problem is making sure that you remove all the tape on intricate designs. you can use gaffer tape to help peal some away but have to be careful not to miss any bits. you can also use methylated spirits to help clean stubborn marks off( it seems to dissolve the residue well) or scrape it back with a cabinet scraper or sharp blade. I have played with dark wax polish on something's and that reduces the visibility of some burns. ps don't forget to add power to engrave through the tape I think it's about 10% on my 80W.

@robxsiq7744

@@alancynvideo The idea is that the oil and other stuff from, that material seals it. "Using food-grade mineral oil on wooden kitchen utensils and cutting boards provides a protective layer that prevents water from seeping into the wood and warping it. It can also prevent bacteria from building up." So yeah..but you might do well to occasionally touch it up with a fresh coat now and then, even without engraving (after all, you end up cutting on cutting boards which digs in). Also, dont engrave too deep on cutting boards just as a rule of thumb

Yes, I LOVE her videos and her personality but I find myself missing a lot of informative information when I’m trying to listen and mulititask because when the music plays it’s blaring but when she talks I can barely hear her so I turn it down when the music comes on and miss a lot of what she said bc the volume is so low. I find myself going back and forth with switching the volume. I end up turning it off bc I don’t have time to keep doing it while multitasking. BUT when I have time I will sit and binge watch all her videos. She makes my day.

There's NO SUCH thing as "food safe" mineral oil. ALL mineral oil is the same, really. You should use Cutting Board oil then finish with cutting board wax. Also, if you "mask" the board first (blue painters tape) where you're going to engrave, you won't get those edge burn marks. ALSO, "air assist" is important as it helps prevent FIRES from starting.

Mineral oil has been used as a laxative for ages. There's plenty of safety data on it. Food safe is about the impurities. If there is some hexane mixed in then it isn't food safe. But it is still fine for industrial lubricant and in making several types of plastic. Depending on what the plastic is intended for. Anyway, don't eat industrial mineral oil, baby oil is probably not good due to the scent ingredient. Food safe and medical grade is pure enough to be fine but too much does cause a BM 😮😂 P.S. many cutting board oils and conditioners are made from paraffin or bees wax cut with mineral oil.

Hi, nice video. I enjoyed it, and don't take this personally because everyone does it. Quit with the music. I'd rather just listen to the machine buzzing. Anything. And then I have to turn it down. And then guess when you are talking again. Please. Tell the others. Otherwise, great video, thanks again.

I’ve had my laser awhile now and I use it mainly for cutting foam. I’m venturing into engraving wood now and had a basic question. If you follow tips for a darker engrave then clean it, you lose the darkness you’re trying to achieve. How can you keep the darkness and still make it food safe?
