Culturedog Sam Hatch continues his series of laserdisc collection videos - this time digging into the storied coffers housing his legendary stash of boxed sets. Bulky. Oversized. Heavy. Awesome. Come celebrate the era when stacks of silvery discs were nestled within massive cardboard spectacles and supplemental features were the name of the game.
In this first of two videos, we’ll take a guided journey through the initial portion of the alphabet and dig into some numerical titles as well. Boxed sets from N through Z will be up shortly in the next video.

I too was a member of The Columbia House LaserDisc Club. Charter member in fact. I also bought a lot of LaserDiscs mail order from Starship Industries. I bought my first LaserDiscs from them, even before I bought my first player in 1984.

Just discovered your channel and I absolutely love it. I used to own a Sony MDP 405 about 20 years ago, and your videos made me pull the trigger on a "new" used Pioneer player last night. Looking forward to dusting off my old LD collection and seeing how the discs look on my 65" Panasonic VT60! Keep up the great work. Really enjoy your in depth comments on each title.

On the Jaws set, that sticker is covering up the original special feature info box that includes the book and soundtrack listing from the first pressing
@Culturedog
@Culturedog 8 жыл бұрын
+William Railey Interesting! Still seems curious in some regards, as the boxes are totally different (the pressing with the book and CD was much thicker) and a lot of the printed details (catalog no., which sides are standard and/or extended play, etc.) outside of the stickered area don't match either - so it's not like they could have repurposed old boxes and just slapped on a sticker to cover over the missing special features. Maybe whoever redesigned the new box forgot to revise the special features listing and they didn't notice until after it had been printed.

Yeah - The Godfather Mini Series is one to look out on Laserdisc(as it isn't available on the new formats). There's two versions : one with the first two films in chronological order and with extra scenes - and another version which has the third film integrated into it. I think it's called "The Godfather Saga : 1902-1959" (for the first two films) and "The Godfather Trilogy 1902-1980"(for the full three films).

That Aliens set, being a rotter, when I got into laserdisc oh so long ago, I bought the aliens set three times and put together a rot free set. It's still rot free to this day. I actually had no idea it had a second pressing, maybe I have some of the second pressing discs in the box now. That Sean Connery II Box Set would drive me crazy. I have almost every bond film on Blu-ray (Opted to do Blu-ray rather than laserdisc due to space, and I can make my own box sets with BD), and I have them arranged by the year they were released. So I do have On her Majesty's Secret Service before Diamonds are Forever.
@Culturedog
@Culturedog 8 жыл бұрын
+TGOTR Yeah, I wonder if some of those good Aliens discs are from the Mitsubishi pressing. You can check the mint markings on the inner hub of the discs to tell the difference. There'll probably be two sets of markings - a Mitsubishi disc would probably look something like this: C1504-85-1 A 05 and A41B11749 and a rot-prone Pioneer something like this: 58-125A1-11 and 24B00519. The numbers may be way different, but the structure should be the same. In any case, glad to hear you were able to piece together a clean copy! I hate having the Bond films out of order too - I bought those first 3 Blu-ray boxed sets when they came out and it sucked how the titles were all scattered throughout the series. I recently finally bought a bunch of empty cases so I can choose some good custom artwork and put together a streamlined, chronological collection.

Hello, Sam I Am! You and I were discussing surround mixes on LD. Well, I ran across some info online regarding laserdisc audio, compression, and bit rates that I thought you and your viewers would enjoy. The writer is explaining why laserdisc DTS audio can sound better than DVD and maybe even theatrical presentations. He is from Italy so excuse his grammatical misgivings. Here's what he had to say: _The laserdisc DTS soundtrack IS NOT the same of the theatrical one: in fact, in theaters, DTS uses a different codec, APT-X, encoded as ADPCM at 882kbps and recorded on CD-ROMs, with a compression of 4:1, while DTS on laserdisc uses Coherent Acoustics perceptual coding compression scheme, encoded at 20bit 44.1KHz with a bitrate of 1235kbps (padded to 1441kbps to be the same of PCM soundtracks) and a compression of 3:1. Hence, the DTS laserdiscs should be better than the theatrical DTS, as the home codec is newer and better, and bitrate higher with less compression. As almost all DTS DVD have the so-called "half bitrate" soundtracks (754kbps padded to 768kbps) instead of full bitrate (1509kbps padded to 1536kbps), the laserdisc DTS soundtracks is always better than "half bitrate" DTS DVD; in some cases, could be preferable to full-bitrate DTS DVD due to different mixes used._ originaltrilogy.com/topic/Why-laserdisc-soundtracks-are-better/id/15519

Culturedog You are most welcomed, Cd. ' Am very pleased to know that more-still is in the near offing. I am sure that you, yourself, are already aware of the very fine site dedicated to all things DiscoVision but, perhaps some of your viewer/commenters are not and so, here I shall attach the link going to it: www.blamld.com/DiscoVision/index.htm Honestly, their logo is a thing past exquisite and the entire of the first page constitutes a veritable study in black, gray and form, I do believe. While reading over the "DiscoVision History: The Beginning" part, I was reminded of a funny story shared with myself by one of those "co-founders" of Gauss Electrophysics, but not included within the narrative. It would seem that - way back when - he was to meet with 'an executive' from MCA for a business lunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel. He was there early and at the table already (as I recall it), and in walks Lew Wasserman himself, for a one-on-one! Spontaneously he knew with who and what he was dealing if not exactly the why part. (Wasserman was then rather a public figure being unmistakable with his trade-mark glasses and had a reputation for being a razor-sharp negotiator.) The event proceeded apace and ended amicably. Key was, that the stakes (patent ones!) were so high that L.W. and his associates wanted nothing to possibly go wrong even slightly, and so he attended to this most delicate matter personally and, as is so rightly said, 'the rest IS history'. Seemingly, the Gauss patents were ones fundamental, and that was why all the special attention ' paid to the deal at that point, that was to be made subsequently. With every re-telling of the tale that I heard over the decades since, his surprise at suddenly dealing with 'the man' himself was a point for much levity. NOTE: Before viewing the site, be sure to attend to "Browser Calibration," showing in red, at the bottom.

3 questions: 1. Is the documentary on the Close Encounters Criterion Collection set "feature length" like the documentary that Laurent Bouzereau did for the 1998 Collector's Edition laserdisc? 2. Did you know that those "MGM Laserdisc Hits" sleeves that were in your 2001, Casablanca, James Bond and Poltergeist sets were originally used for the MGM Records label? See this image to get a better idea of what I'm talking about: i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/wb0AAOSwubRXDxxq/$_1.JPG 3. Why do you think Universal decided not to make Jurassic Park as part of their Signature Collection?
@Culturedog
@Culturedog 7 жыл бұрын
1. No, it's more scattered and interactive (multiple audio tracks etc.) It's weird, Criterion never seemed to be much into creating narrative documentaries for their titles for the most part. 2. I knew I'd seen them somewhere before, so that's cool. Reminds me of when Sony started replicating the old Columbia Records LP label on their CDs in the 90s. 3. I'm guessing that since the title had been released/re-released so much already at the time the Signature Collection came out, that they figured they'd focus on newer titles and catalog titles that hadn't seen much love. I'm still surprised that the original CAV box of Jurassic Park didn't have any extras. They really should have thrown in the Making Of disc for some satisfying supplements.
@vintagevhstreasures4058

Culturedog I agree that the CAV Jurassic Park set should've had supplemental material. But I guess there wasn't enough space for it unless they made it an amalgamation of CAV and CLV.

There is a Signature Collection laserdisc set of E.T. that came out in 1996. It has a gold soundtrack CD. It has the deleted Harrison Ford cameo and a 90 Minute documentary that is not on any other home media release. It is on the Blu Ray and the Ultimate DVD Gift Set but it is edited down to under 40 minutes. Do you have that set and if not do you plan on picking it up any time soon?

Yup, I show it in this video shortly after the 29 minute mark. Minus the CD though, I think, which I had accidentally left with my other soundtrack discs. I'll have to do a spotlight video on it at some point. I snagged it for peanuts back when Ken Cranes Laserdisc was liquidating their LD gear at the end of the format's sales life. I've got the old 2002 2-disc Limited Collector's Edition DVD set too, but haven't picked up the Blu-Ray yet. Definitely on the "to get" list though.

Oh, man, I had so many of these sets back in the day! You know, the Aliens box set came out before the Alien set. Never had a problem with rot. I think Ridley Scott and the studio saw how popular Cameron's set was decided to do one for the first film. Regarding the Abyss set, it was really frustrating for me because my local shop only ordered the Pan and Scan version. I can still remember how frustrated I was because I love that movie and was drooling over that box set. As it turns out, Cameron loves the Super 35 film format because it's so easy to crop for theatrical widescreen as well as TV pan and scan. However, with Super 35, you are losing picture information no matter which format you choose! The widescreen version loses information at the top and bottom of the frame, while pan and scan, or course, loses information on the sides. As for the Jurassic Park box set, I had the full CAV version. Later, I also picked up the gatefold DTS version. The boxset had a better picture, but that DTS version....just awesome, awesome sound! By far the best-sounding disc I owned. Only the blu can match it.
@Culturedog
@Culturedog 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm actually going to devote a full video to Cameron's LD releases at some point - just because there's so much rumor and misinformation going around from that period, and a lot of people miss the differences that Super 35 brought to the table compared to transfers of films that were shot in scope. Even though Cameron spelled it out pretty clearly in the essay he wrote for the Abyss P&S boxed set. It's weird how some titles were harder to find in widescreen - I was always looking for letterboxed copies of The Lost Boys and Black Rain, but it seemed that every single shop only stocked the pan and scan versions. indeed, that Jurassic Park DTS disc is earth-shattering! I've been tempted to start collecting all the DTS LD releases, but they're fairly overpriced for the most part. I think I'll just pick them up here and there as deals come along.
@batman.darthmaul

Yeah, I had to wait for my shop to order the widescreen version of the Abyss box set. I also believe that was one of the first LDs to be THX certified? I could be wrong about that. Anyway, great set.Those DTS discs are still overpriced? Hahaha!! They were overpriced back in the day when I picked mine up. I waited just long enough to decide I wanted it that it was out of print, of course.

@Culturedog

Yup, The Abyss was the first official THX-certified release. Supposedly Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country was a THX stealth test, but it was never marketed as such. That disc does look great though. Yeah, the collectors are still keeping the DTS LD prices high. I made sure to grab a small pile when Ken Cranes went out of business. Some titles are more than others, but finding them cheap is a waiting game for sure.
@batman.darthmaul
@batman.darthmaul 7 жыл бұрын
I wonder if those collectors know they can probably get the same movie in DTS on blu for cheaper than LD, and with a much better picture. I guess I can understand the devotion to format, though. I used to listen to Art Bell all the time on the radio and Ken Crane was a big sponsor of his, especially for radios. Anyway, because of that I knew who Ken Crane was, but never ordered from him. There was also a brick-and-mortar store, wasn't there?

Love the videos!!! So looking forward to getting into LD when I get the $$. What does CLV/CAV mean? Or could you post a link to a glossary of home theatre terminology?
@Culturedog
@Culturedog 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed them! That's actually going to be my next video once I finalize my collection series - I'm going to do a run through of all the terminology and other laserdisc essentials. CLV is Constant Linear Velocity (or Extended Play) and CAV is Constant Angular Velocity (or Standard Play), but the basic pertinent info is: With CAV, you can only fit 30 minutes of video content on each disc side. But, it offers freeze frame and slow motion capability. A lot of special editions used CAV discs to store written material (like screenplays) on individual frames that you can step through one at a time with your remote. Also, people used to like it for big, visually-driven films where you might want to watch parts at a slower speed etc. CLV had the benefit of being able to fit 60 minutes of video on each side of the disc, but it lost all of CAV's frame control abilities. Though there were some higher-end players with "digital effects" that would allow you to do perform still frame actions using a digital memory.
@greendayguitar15

Quick opinion question: Do you think Laserdisc releases with THX certification have any difference in quality from their non-THX counterparts? Often when I look for laserdiscs, I look for THX and CAV format if I can find it, although I know a lot of people say THX doesn't make a huge difference if any.
@Culturedog
@Culturedog 7 жыл бұрын
Yes and no - THX didn't really do anything in terms of generating the source material, they just oversaw the overall operation and added special test patterns to the unused fringes of the signal so that they could check for corruption after each step in the transfer process all the way through to mastering etc. I've heard some claims that they demanded digital noise reduction in order to meet certification, but that seems less likely than DNR just being very popular around the time THX started certifying discs. On the negative side, you could theoretically have a garbage print transferred and mastered meticulously, and become THX certified by default because the horrible looking/sounding source material wasn't corrupted by anything during the transfer process. This basically came to be with the notorious Highlander DVD - which was mostly the result of THX having no idea how to handle DVD certification at first and thinking they could just follow their LD playbook. On the positive side, studios didn't really pony up for THX certification unless they had a high profile title that they wanted to treat right - so in that case, the disc was probably always going to be transferred well, THX or not. Interestingly, a lot of THX Dolby Digital titles were later reissued as DTS laserdiscs without the THX badge, but featured the same level of A/V quality, if not better in some regards. So while THX didn't officially add quality to anything, for LD it really did work as a reasonable guarantee that the disc was transferred and mastered well.

Culturedog I have that old 10th anniversary THX DVD of Highlander, it looks ok(but still bad) on a CRT but on an LED TV it looks absolutely HORRIBLE!!! It's also non anamorphic which makes the picture even worse! The transfer looks like it was sourced from someone's moldy, damp basement and reprocessed through muddy water, it just reeks of incompetence! The 10th ann. VHS looked WAY better than this and they were charging people 30 to 40 bucks back in the late 90's for DVDs like this lol! Early DVDs were pretty bad(I have quite a few of them!) but this was just horrific quality control, the picture looks defective as well. Was the Laserdisc version better?
