If I don't read these books this year, they have to leave my house!
Come with me on this journey where I try to motivate myself into actually achieving a goal this year (hopefully). I've held on to these books for so long because I feel like I will love them, but I need a push to prioritize them and appreciate them more 💛

I just got the shelves that I plan to have in my home set-up and that “forced” me to make some hard choices. It was rough but glad I did it. Loved hearing your plans and wishing you much success!

Thank you so much! There is nowhere in our apartment for another bookcase so I do have to start making some tougher choices about what I'm buying and reading --and soon!

Middlemarch is the best book I’ve ever read. I highly encourage you to give it a shot. It is beautiful and charming and wonderful and all things good. I love the round house as well!! Im rereading it this year for sure. I read the little friend this past year and was pleasantly surprised. I read the color of law years ago and don’t remember a single thing 🥴 There there is soooo good! I don’t know if I think the luminaries is worth it and I rated it 5 stars at the time. Such a good stack!!!!!!

My suggestions: Milkman- just read on audio, the pacing and dialect is quite difficult to follow in the physical book if you’re not Northern Irish (in my opinion) Girl with a pearl earring- save for spring/summer. It’s so good! 84 Charing Cross Road- can def be read in one sitting. It’s completely charming and I think you’ll really like it. Their Eyes Were Watching God- I’m fairly sure you’ll love this. It’s beautifully written and I still constantly think of it two years on. I was worried about the dialect as well but I got used to it surprisingly fast. Wishing you luck with this project!

I think this is a great idea!! I actually pulled up my earliest yearly tbr spreadsheet (2019) and am going through it to see which ones are still on my shelves after so long-I'll come back and post the very embarrassing number when I'm done so you don't feel so alone I'm currently reading 84, Charing Cross Road and really liking it. It's peasant and witty is how i'd describe it. And I also need to read the Luminaries this year (I know for a fact it was on my 2019 spreadsheet) so if you want to do a buddy read I'd be up for it!

As promised, I'm back with the embarrassing number: 120 books I owned unread in 2019 I still own unread in 2023... Really interestingly, there was one that wasn't in my possession for most of the intervening years (I'd unhauled it and dropped in a free little library in my neighborhood and saw it, same exact copy, in a different free little library about a month ago and since I'm being kinder to my younger self and realizing that she kinda had good taste, I decided to pick it up and give it another chance) As embarrassing as the number is I was pretty surprised to find that that was only about 40% of my 2019 collection-I haven't been reading very much in the intervening years at all so the fact that more than half of my collection moved (and I did read quite a few!) is pretty impressive I think! (...what's not so impressive is that my collection has doubled in size since then.)

I have a ton more than this that I've had for a long time too, just not quite as long. It is hard when your buying and borrowing outpaces your reading. If only I could read more! Too bad I have other hobbies and interests 😭

thanks for this - it inspired me to pull down the 10 oldest books on my tbr (including one book i've had since 2012!!!!!) and commit to reading them finally over the next few months. btw The Color Purple is a super fast, surprisingly plotty read and would be a great place to start on your list!

We’re bookish twins.Same problem. I moved from London back to N.Ireland in 2019 after 15 yrs. I had books from 2015/16? & longer that were unread. Most were digital ebooks or audio. I tried to read one backlist book a month throughout the pandemic. The Library book starts well but quickly gets very boring. It’s very overwritten. Too much info about people who worked at the library. Middlemarch was a book I had to read in 1981/82 as it was on the A level English literature syllabus. I reread this year via audio. Definitely recommend Milkman via audio. Look how many you can get on audio & ebook. I rely on audio heavily. How about a year long project that means you read one of those books ( or two?) each month. 🍀👋☘️🤗🤩☕️📖📕📚

Yes I definitely plan on reading about two of these a month! I like audio but I'm also a big podcast listener so unfortunately I can't get to as many audiobooks as I would like to. Almost 1/3 of the books I read in 2022 were on audio, so I guess I do alright in finding some time. I tend to gravitate towards books I don't own physically, but I'll have to see what I want to get on audio :)

Middlemarch is so fanastic, its clever and funny at the same time and portrays a soap opera of a town. Definately try reading it!

I say give The Sparrow a try. It's more sci-fi than people think, but definitely with a literary foundation. It was, for me, a sad and melancholic book, and I remember you said you liked sad books. What I liked about The Sparrow is that it took the trope of first contact and injected some reality into it. I wanna say the themes are about (mis)communication and trauma and relationships. Also some religion/faith aspects embedded in above-mentioned themes.

Haha I definitely do like melancholy things! I'm interested in reading a more literary first contact story. I think you've sold me on it!

Oh man, I think I have several of these on my owned TBR as well, collecting dust. Booktube really had us hauling a ton, didn’t it? I would highly suggest keeping and reading The Woman Warrior. It’s beautifully written, feels almost magical realist. I think it would be right up your alley!

Lol, I have owned The Little Friend for SO long...like...high school? Sooo...twenty years...? It is terrible. I really liked There There, but I am annoyed that there will be a sequel? Although...I haven't seen it around so maybe that was an all talk situation and it isn't happening! Fingers crossed. Hahaha, I also really liked The Luminaries. I thought it was quite fun. Mystery with a large cast of characters. Samesies with The Color Purple. Need to read it.

I loved 84 Charing Cross Road, Cannery Row and Age of Innocence! My copies of Luminaries and Milkman are waiting to be read for similar reasons you mentioned... I'm not a huge fan of Middlemarch to be honest - finally read it in 2022 but I found it quite a slog and I think it's kinda overrated (and I love Victorian novels!) but I know I'm in a minority haha. Tracy Chevalier - haven't read this one but I've read another book of hers and really didn't like it, it was very bland.
